Distant Worlds II Event What Ship are you Bringing and Why?

I’m actually returning early from my current trip in order to try and get a new ship for DW2. As it stands now I have a asp x with a 31.5 lay jump range when fully fueled. I’m hoping that what I made on my trip will be enough to get me a anaconda. Besides the normal refitting to make it a explorer, I don’t know what else to bring on it. I was not around for DW1, so I don’t know what’s needed. Hopefully as we get closer to it starting I’ll know what to put on my conda. Or if anyone has better suggestions let me know.

You'll need a ship with around a 33.5 light year jump range to avoid needing jumponium. So that gives you a baseline to work with.

I've two exploration ships currently. One is a Type-10 support explorer. 48 light year jump range with fuel and repair controllers but no DSS.

The other is a Krait Mk II set up as an armed escort explorer. 51.75 light year jumps. A full set of weapons with fighter support and, thanks to a 3A prismatic generator, just over 500Mj of resistance augmented shields.

Ok so I made a un-engineered anaconda, it will make 34lys by its self. I’m going to engineer it, but in case I can’t do that intime I know it will make the minimum distance needed.

I’m hoping one I engineered it I can then add some weapons to it, maybe more cargo space, or better shields.
All that matters now is that I can get back to the bubble and build it.

I went back to the AspX because I didn't have enough materials to mod a FSD more than 1st level and I don't want to go off hunting for more. I have it at around 35ly jump at the moment. Of course, we will have to see how they did the scanners. We may or may not have an extra slot. I will have 2 SRVs though, repair limpet and one AFMU along with a small cargo bay.

Since we now know that not only is the Krait Phantom coming in 3.3 but other new ships as well, I wonder how much the roster of ship choices will change between today and expedition start? It’s a good bet at least one new ship in 3.3 will be tailored towards exploration.

I know I’ll be changing my choice of DBX to a different ship, but I think I’ll wait to decide until we see what 3.3 will bring with it first.

Oh boy yeah baby

At the moment I am happy with my Krait. But I will see what Q4 brings to the table.

Just revisiting this thread as DW2 is now so close:

I'm still totally undecided as since I fell in love with the Krait II I've, (for fun), been out and about in a Federal Corvette and an Imperial Cutter. Don't know what to bring!!

This is where I am too. Since Q4 is bringing ships (plural), I'm curious to see what we'll get. But at the moment, it would take a pretty nice ship to get me out of my Krait.

The Beluga will have 11 unrestricted internals, like the Anaconda. That's huge. But of course, it will still be limited to a scoop that is a size smaller than the FSD, instead of a size larger like most other ships. The jump range will be pretty easy to get into the mid-50s or so.

Not only the Krait Phantom, but also a Mamba. But if the new Mamba is closer to the original (the Krait wasn't), it'll be a fairly lightweight and fast smuggler/racer/fighter.

I've come back to the Bubble primarily to start outfitting. I had pretty much decided on a Krait Mk II, primarily because of the SLF. Before that I was seriously considering a Python. Sick and tired of the AspX cockpit (even though it's tough to rival the view!), and the Krait cockpit is actually similar. I really don't like these industrial cockpits so much. With the announcement of new ships coming, I'm going to see whether there'll be a new exploration-friendly ship on the market, although if there is, I daresay it'll be very popular.

I'm also not convinced the SLF will add all that much to the exploration shenanigans since you can't dismiss your ship while you're flying it. So maybe I'll see-saw back to a Python before we leave if the new ships aren't compelling enough. At least engineering for the Krait is pretty much the same as engineering for the Python..

I originally signed up with my Anaconda but I've found since then that I usually prefered piloting the ASP for lazy exploration. The view and turn rate really make the experience 200% better, and I also found that the extra slots for repair limpets and redundant AMFUs in the conda didn't really mean squat for my playstyle. In 3 years of exploration I've never needed hull repair or the 2nd AMFU, noting that I avoid utilizing neutron boosts.

I'll be spinning up this 70ly ASP build for DW2: https://s.orbis.zone/srt
The focus of the build was on thermal efficiency in supercruise for jumping while scooping, and retaining a bit of thrust for scooting around surfaces.

I have a feeling the Phantom's going to be a decent explorer. It's got one less hardpoint and seems to be missing the SLF, so it'll likely have additional internals and/or better jump range.

Well next Thursday 11-8 we will be seeing the Ships Livestream by Frontier. I wonder how many pilots choice of ship will be changing after it? :D

I already know I'm dropping my DBX for something else. Whether my new choice is my four year old Asp Explorer or some new ship entirely depends on next Thursday....

Don't forget the excellent supercruise handling, and the cockpit view plus visibility. I quite liked flying a Beluga myself, but never liked the restricted choice of modules ("Shield generator, fuel scoop, fighter bay: choose two of three"): that problem will be solved now. Wish they had done it sooner.

Heck yeah. If they had done this before the Krait was added, I might have been flying one.
