Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

User friendly Linux exist and is very user friendly. That's not an issue. Problem is that there are very few pre-installed Linux boxes due of how in reality OEM works. Microsoft holds OEMs in thigh grip even after all anti-trust lawsuits. There are lot of other reasons OEMs don't want to get into Linux...but I will leave them for now.

Yet there's some work to be done. Flatpak must take hold - while building RPMs and Debs should no be trouble for well prepared team - it is bunch of configs and scripts, well documented ones - flatpak allows for more modern package configuration and support. Graphics API are fine, but only recently we got up to date OpenGL support (4.5/4.6) across the board. Vulkan API support is good though and is one of the best in for platforms.

What I wish to see is better streamlined user interface for indentifying and configuring peripherals like wheels and HOTAS. At backend things get cleared up so I hope there will be some generalization at frontend too. I know there are good configuration guis for gamepads. Something just more general would be cool as well.

Said that, none of that should really be a problem to roll out game to Linux. Way Steam works, or even individual installs, is no big bother ans has been working for years. If it all down to financial numbers and risks, then yes, it is something company should look at and vet if they are ready to go that route. FD work on MacOS clearly shows they would have no issues with tech know how to do Linux version.

Windows is too though, only users tend not to know it. Just buy a new computer in a couple years or if you're a bit more savvy a complete fresh system install. I think the main difference is that Linux users are more likely to know a bit of what they're doing and getting themselves into. This is a tangent to the topic of the thread though.

I am going in your direction on this point.

We are prisoners of Windows, its monopoly and its unilateral decisions

:)

haha, you didn't know? As of July 28th, I haven't used windows in 20 years.

Anybody can reduce their usage of Windows.. You're no prisoner of Microsoft's, you're better than that!

Just because Freedom isn't easy doesn't mean you're forced to use Windows by gunpoint. You are holding the gun, not Microsoft.

Have more belief in yourself! And if you can't believe in yourself, believe in the me that believes in you!

:D

I liked the CP/M of Digital Research and the TOS of the Atari ST

This thread runs and runs.. until the end of the solar system I guess

there's a big overlap between tech oriented people and space combat/sim games.

always made it seem odd that mac was their preferred porting choice. A game full of buttons and options and centered around choice doesn't seem to fit the apple vision of not having any of those things under the guise of user friendliness and protecting users from themselves.

So guys, ekhem.....drum roll please....let's hear it for guy who finally figured out what was wrong with CRC error, commander RedMcG! His solution, explained here, finally allows to pass CRC error and log into ED client under wine:

Result looks like bellow at the moment. Lots of bug reporting and tweaking ahead. I will update my instructions at this thread tomorrow https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ng-Wine-EXPERIMENTAL-NOT-OFFICIALLY-SUPPORTED

It is highly possible that results will be considerably better with DXVK which is used for Steam Play (as we have seen evidence of that before and Valve is working actively on that translation). Same dance with dotnet installation and workaround will apply though as launcher is essential for game.

We are getting there! :) I will say it was almost spooky feeling to see rotating Krait and station in Linux.

Do you think it would be worth trying on Intel Graphics? It works fine under Windows 10, but running it without rebooting would be nice.

SO so cool. can it be installed from scratch?? i have so many questions.

Yes, it can be installed from sratch. I will update installation instructions for this when I will get some free time. I will also try to provide update for using Steam Play for this.

We are at the beginning of this, but this looks promising.

Considering as soon as windows 7 is dead I'm never using another windows platform again. I know a dozen such people who are done with Microsoft. I currently use Linux for everything except one gaming PC.

When I look at my steam library I take into consideration whether in the future it will work on linux or not.

It would be in their best interests to support Linux as steam and all the other major game makers are starting to design their games from the ground up with Linux support.

The trend is heading in that direction and needs to continue.

My problem would be trackir. As many great games are there are that will run in linux now, the problem for me would be that my favorite genre is flight sims and last i checked, trackir doesnt work in linux.
Started using linux with redhat 5.0 in 96 and up until about 6 months ago had a slackware current install, but with a new computer im playing more games and never installed slackware on it.
