ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I played HL2 for about 20 mins this weekend, inside the DK2. Man was that a mistake, I had to go lie down afterwards.

Seated cockpit games are best suited for this, VR in FPS's..... oooooohhhh I didn't feel well.

Have you tried QuakeII? From what I hear that's a pretty good fps experience and I haven't heard anyone getting sick from that. But yeah, HL2 no matter how awesome gets me sweating after 10 minutes or so.

New Elite pilot here.
i'm currently playing with DK1. however, the text it's impossible to read so i' m forced to constantly take it off.

waiting on my DK2. This game is completely different withe OR. it feels so lame on a regular screen.

And no ont to make it work with E:D. Is there any updated guide for best experience on latest SDK or should I try to get an older?

Did you tunr the mouse sensitivity right down to almost zero? Otherwise its too quick and can be jarring. Did you turn off always run option to walk? That helps a bit. The new VR mod has the base speed slowed down also.

Ive not had any issues when these variables are set.

do you guys play this on mouse?

i would imagine the "puke factor" would be reduced if you played it on a pad, as at least things like turn speed will be limited rather than unlimited instant spin on the spot?

What I think makes HL2 a queasy experience is the freeze when loading. Your brain gets properly tripped up by the sudden lack of head tracking.

I played it for a while and felt similarly sick until I started shutting my eyes the moment the [loading] message appeared, waiting until I heard some noise before re-opening them.

Believe it or not, I find it better on mouse and keyboard when the sensitivity settings are turned down low. This way you can do slow and subtle turns that dont jar. I found the joystick to be more clunky and more jarring.
On the other hand every now and then you need to do a fast 180 spin and you cant do that on joystick. The key is to turn the sensitivity down low though ,so you dont get an out of control spin or spaccy movements.

Im probably not the best person to ask tho as Ive not had any real motion sickness with HL2. I did however take it very easy on my first go of about 20 minutes and slowly built up my time playing on it.

Am hoping bite size sessions will build my tolerance however it is clear that for game experiences outside of a cockpit very very careful game design is needed

Im very extremely awesomely pleased to experience this. :O

My first trips in E:D with Oculus has been eventful and exploring, especially the cockpit is amazing, to walk over to a window and look out while ship is heading to the station in SC. Then turn around and find my headless body sitting there :O out of body experience.

If only there was some higher resolution. I only experience some judder in stations right now even tho I run 4.1. I think I will go pack to trading since I guess those cockpits are nicer in oculus than the vipers that doesn't give much view out.

Well, I'm just glad that no one saw me crawling around on the floor in front of my PC just to try and see what was underneath the pilot chair. :)

I know what you mean. First thing I did was the waste disposal mission to test it and I was climbing on my stool to see if I could see out the back of the sidewinder rear cockpit. I'd love a ship where you could see behind you properly. Little details look amazing like the way the scanner floats.

Yeah I've JUST stopped playing for the night. The first few days were rough. ESPECIALLY in that damn hover boat. BUt I'm lasting longer each day. Made it a full hour in RavenHolm :p Jumped a few times. The sense of terror you get is genuine when something lunges at your face from the dark.

I figure if the movement was slower overall It would be easyier to take. HL2 (and TF2) are both very quick moving games. Feels like whiplash sometimes... without the lash. All whip :D

Pretty much my experiance. The hover-bots are awesome.... till they blind you.

Such a great game, but made me ill quickly.
