∞ probes?

How odd, yes you're correct that the current max is 50, it used to be 200 which I selected. It must have been changed at some point but didn't revert settings previously picked.

Sneaky sneaky!

Anyway, probes. In a game where you seriously have to suspend your disbelief to even begin to comprehend some of the design decisions made, the people who are crying over infinite probes should go take a long hard look at the mirror. And if the mirror is still intact, I dunno, like.... go outside or something.

But you're the only one who's crying.

You've literally dropped in out of the blue to moan and swing your handbag around.

No-one here was crying, they were talking about a game feature in a game we all play and all have an interest in.

It's all reasonably chilled round here, like a cry free area, apart from folk like yourself who randomly drop in to call people names.

supposedly fully grown adults who should know better have been crying

Aye that would be you!

No-one here was crying, they were just talking about the topic like normal people do.

There should be nothing to discuss. Infinite probes should always have been the way to go from day one.

And lo'! Let it be heard across the kingdom that thy' queen of all-knowledge, Hellakitty, henceforth declares that the discussion is over! Hallowed be her name!

Bitstorm was ranting in block caps earlier, but its everyone else who is upset apparently.

What like 100 pages back? When I was moaning about that ridiculous poll.

I've suggested generating your XXX probes up to full again from fuel scooping in a Metallic Ring for 10-20 seconds... Done...

Others have suggested similar by fuel scooping around gas giants, although IMHO would take more to implement that the above.

Actually I've changed my mind, I prefer your idea. To be honest I think a ring scooping mechanic would be better than gas giant scooping.

Mainly because I had a mess around in game, it's just going to be something like this isn't it :

So perhaps :
 • The closer you get to the ring the quicker the "probe building fuel" or probes accumulate
 • Get too close and of course you trigger a forced drop and damage
 • If it's done by ring type, ie metallic then in the video you would have to keep to the inner ring
 • A standard fuel scoop is required, all explorers have them anyway

I mean, buzzing huge rings as close as possible is great just on its own. It would be more in accord with the exploration loop, it would flow much better, it's like the polar opposite of material grind.

You can't tell me ring fly bys aren't something explorers don't enjoy! I think more than sitting at a star (gas giant) and refilling anyway.

I'd be tempted to make the probe cap high, so it's irregular, maybe the restock is then even something explorers look forward to?

I'm not sure only certain ring types should be viable though, it might be too limiting. Although I do like the notion of sticking to a single ring and following it round, perhaps some ring types are more effective than others? Or perhaps metallic rings offer superior probes? Similar to say basic/standard/premium ammo you could have rocky/icy/metallic though it does not seem to be massively "scientific"?

So you're in the middle of nowhere, and you use the FSS, and spot a crazy looking planet which has some "unknown features" on it...? Yes, you need probes :)

And you need to go down to that planet for WHAT, exactly? I repeat: it's optional. It's at least as optional as everything being handwaved by stigbob: Guardian tech, Modules from tech brokers, Engineer upgrades, etc.

Also wasn't the big complaint about materials gathering largely because people didn't want to have to land on planets? My response is that if you're interested in landing on planets and exploring surfaces, you're gonna use probes. And if you're gonna use probes, you're gonna explore planet surfaces. And if you're gonna explore planet surfaces, you're going to have plenty of opportunities to acquire materials for probes. But I also advocate for having multiple methods of replenishing probes - you should be able to mine mats off of asteroids with any weapon (not just mining lasers), and there should be an engineering effect which lets you use fuel as ammo. (And there could be others of course)

And my sub-argument is: you don't have probes but want to explore a planet? Oh No! You're stuck playing the game exactly the same way that everyone has been playing it since Horizons initially launched.

Or take the mirror with you. Or even better take two mirrors and you can have infinite outdoors...

So, regardless of the 35 pages of guff that supposedly fully grown adults who should know better have been crying over, what are the actual chances that the developers are going to change the probe count to something finite?
Slightly less than zero. FDev did their homework and made their call, supported by the special 17 and reinforced by popular opinion here on the forums and on the poll.
