ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I'm thinking along the lines of Wing Commander IV and maybe the new BSG. Something resembling more a contemporary military flight suit but maybe more fitted.

I don't know much about the lore, but I thought we were playing independent traders / pirates / bounty-hunters. Why would they have military uniforms?

Give me a vest, gun-belt, boots and trousers with a Corellian blood stripe any day.

Another slightly off topic post (I must be chalking up a few yellow cards at this stage mods) but just wanted to post it on here..

Its a video of the dk2 modded to work with the kerbal space programme demo. I couldnt help but draw parallels with what we might get with the planetary landings expansion way down the line.

The demo itself is fairly basic and makes me realise how spoilt I am with how advanced ED is already, but conceptually it holds up as a fair comparison. I like the idea that different engines are used for different moments during the ascent and descent, and the re-entry flames licking the cockpit canopy around 14:30mins....very cool!

ohh its soo cool to hear you say that.. my pair is waiting to be shipped.. cant wait :D

I highly recommend a H.O.T.A.S., and my X52pro damn near matches the stick and throttle in-game, which is a bit trippy to say the least. But unless you want to take off or lift up your Rift every time you need to find a button on the keyboard, H.O.T.A.S. is the way...

Enjoy your Rift, Elite is by far the best VR game I've played, but I'd also recommend War Thunder if you want some more flying action.

^^ THIS ^^
Though, I hope that FD concentrates on ships and gameplay rather than avatar fashion.

...
...

Then again... hmmmmmm :D

Man, I've been hauling cargo for a couple days now. When I look down with my Oculus on, I want to see a fat hairy trucker body, in a mustard stained undershirt, bottle of whiskey in my lap, and an ash tray next to my throttle. Or just this guy...

OK, I'll concede to gameplay over customization, but maybe in like a few years the devs could tackle this? I'd pay boatloads for that level of DLC

Implementation of Oculus SDK 0.4.1?

Any idea when this will be implemented? It fixes the SSE 4.1 requirement, which makes those of us with older AMD processors happy.

Thank you!

I created a bug report/ticket on Mon 4th Aug 2014 22:33 telling about SSE4.1 crash and F12 not working. Short after submitting the status of the ticket changed to under investigation. On the 12th I added a note to the ticket that SDK 4.1 is out that fixes the SSE bug. But I didn't get any updates at all.
I did submit another ticket for another different bug with a single player mission that freezes the game on the 8th and and got a note in the ticket on the 22nd that this issue was resolved.
From this I guess the new Oculus SDK is not implemented yet. I hope FD gives a better statement soon.

F12 works fine for me - I just have somewhat unreliable positional tracking in ED - sometimes it works just fine for hours, sometimes it completely loses positional tracking after minutes (directional tracking still works and in that case F12 doesn't work anymore) - sometimes it it flickers on and off and jumps.

The workaround with the SSE4.1 bug is to turn positional tracking off by covering up the camera or unplugging the camera. And as you found out this leads to the F12 bug...

No not the uniform (that was blue in WC anyway) I'm talking about the flight jumpsuit I imagine it has provisions sealing off the elements and provide air (10 minutes of it) that makes sense to me versus having plain clothes that would offer no protection whatsoever to space elements. Military / Police insignia would be added once you join a particular faction but as is it's just a plain flight suit.

Well - but I'd call the game close to unplayable without positional tracking. It's good enough to get out of danger, but other than that, I consider it a nauseating mess with that 'fix' applied.

It's better than a BSOD, but that's about it.

Not sure if this is the right place however I finally gave in and ordered a Dk2 on Sunday :D. I don't know when it will turn up as "I'm in processing" but I guess sometime in October.

I'm crossing fingers that E:D will be working slightly more smoothly by that time. Cant wait.

Edit: It would be just my luck they announce CV1 as mine is ready but ho hum.

On the topic of the pilot jumpsuit, it looks like they have taken quite a bit of inspiration from mechanical counter-pressure suits, see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_activity_suit

To summarize, the basic concept is that you only pressurize the helmet area, and everywhere else you simply apply mechanical pressure by having a really tight-fitting suit typically made from latex. Over that, you typically wear boots, some kind of oversuit with cooling system and channels for perspiration, etc. Above this there might be some protective vest for the sake of safety and modesty (the suits can be pretty revealing).

The primary advantages over today's space suits are:

- Easier to take on and remove
- Simpler to repair and manufacture
- Higher mobility, less tiring for the user
- Much more practical when inside an already pressurized compartment
- A lot more sexy-looking :D

What is the problem with E : D that you'd like to see smoothed?

Well from what i'm reading the game needs to be compiled using the latest SDK. I'm hoping that will of happened by the time mine arrives and I wont have to apply work around's to get it working.

Dont get me wrong, I'd be over the moon if it arrives next week but I dont think that's gonna happen! ;)
