This is one of my big fears. I really hope that FD have given serious thought to emergent gameplay. There needs to be other goals outside of earning credits. In other words, amassing wealth should be a side effect of doing other activities - or a means to an end; a tertiary goal.
Right now it seems like every single thing you can do in the game revolves around earning credits, and after you get a fortune there's no other purpose to the game - other than griefing, perhaps.
Hopefully the richness of the universe, and the activities thereof, are to the point that you can spend an entire career as a commander flying between a handful of systems.
Where to start?
The ultimate goal in the game is to become Elite - in hopefully as many of the paths that will become available as possible - credits only being one.
As the devs progress the game, there will be exploring, mining, subversion, galaxy politics, (proper) bounty hunting, (proper) pirating (both for goods as as freelance) and emergent play deriving from that. And that is just for the initial release, with options and capabilities increasing from there.
To treat the current beta as anything other than testing - I.e. considering and playing it as a game will only result in burn out if too much time is spent in the currently fairly restricted scope.
If you feel that you have seen all there is to see, played all the play there is to play and dutifully reported all the bugs you encountered; then why not take a break until more of the game is added?
