Distant Worlds II Event What Ship are you Bringing and Why?

What about SRV hangers? I'm super hard on SRV's, and I still remember how extra fragile they were in group settings on the DWE, so I feel like I need to bring at least 2x

It raises an interesting question; why can we build advanced space fighters in our ships, but have to haul our Asps back to the Bubble to replace a glorified dune buggy?

That's a great observation. I see no reason why the SRV hanger should function any different than the SLF hanger.

For me and the way I explore in Elite, jump range is of very high importance when choosing a ship to fly. Almost criteria number one.

Sure, and makes sense to reach someplace specific or within a certain time frame. But an arbitrary "rim" based on the then current maximum potential of ships? Yeah, I guess that's a thing for some players. Obviously not something I bother with much nor really see the appeal of. Navigating through the thin bits can be fun, but that's also relative based on jump range too.

So... I assume Beagle Point is no longer considered to be on the far rim of the galaxy?

Yeah, but to be fair, "on the rim" is a relative term. For example, the Skull and Crossbones Nebula is something I'd consider to be on the rim, yet you can plot all the way there and back with a roughly 20 LY jump range using nothing but scoopable stars these days.

To clarify, what I meant with rim is the edge of the galaxy, where you simply can't move any further away from Sag A*

Edit, because I forgot:
The rim doesn't really expand any further outwards anymore, even if there will be another increase in jump range. The reason, quite simply is: there are no more stars. Go to Semotus for example and try to find any other star beyond it... good luck.

My selection is rapidly exploding. ;) :D
Oh that's a nicely themed Collection you got there. Yes, decisions, decisions. I'm still sticking to my initial Cobra MkIV, but I'm contemplating going for even more hardship and limitations by choosing my old Hauler! Yes, it's a tin can with silly few optional internals, but it handles well and with a 450m/s speed and 670m/s boost it's rather fun. The main problem though, Shield or SRV-hangar?

From the Beta 2 patch notes.

  • Switched the Discovery Scanner to a built in module, that is fitted to all ships. This frees up a slot for players to use. Refunded credits too.

Yep, you won't have to choose between the two, now. :D
Woohoo! I take full credit for this, obviously FD listened to my quandary. ;)

Now, I'm still thinking of dishing that shield in favor of a Guardian-FSD. To boldly go!

ok just did a test, my 49.5ly python can take all mining gear, and the power etc works fine. I still have my 5A heat perfect power plant, my 5D shields, my 6G hangar and plenty of space for limpets and mining cargo. Only thing I can't fit is an AFMU....should be ok, otherwise does anyone think I should get one over prospector limpets now?

Seems like you won't need an ADS/FSS module slot. Might be able to work something in with that, or is that what you're accounting for by mentioning the build here now?

Alas, I wrote the above with this into consideration. I was very excited when I saw that line of the patch notes. Maybe they will get rid of the DSS slot requirements too then problem solved!

Another solution is if wing mates' p-limpets highlight stuff for me too, is that the case?

Kind of a worrisome thought for me, the galaxy running out of stars in the thin bits. Not too keen on the notion of hitting a hard wall, to be honest.

If I understand correctly there are some thin bits of strands of systems and the like that we're still finding out about that go out quite a ways in the real Milky Way. Probably some remnants of past mergers and so on and some things getting fanned out.

I dont think this will be my last decision as I switched already from
- Cutter (cause I just got the rank when DW2 was announced) to
- T7 (cause of the recent mass reduction buff) to
- Python (cause I already wanted to do DWE in it) to
- Corvette (as I grinded that rank after the Imp one) to
- Clipper (cause I tried and tried but couldnt find another role for it) to
- Krait (cause Krait) and now to
- Orca ;)

dear...
have to add:
- Dolphin (cause of the latest beta buffs )
The Lundgren got serious! :D

Yeah, to each their own. There are people who try to push the limits and want to reach the furthest systems out there. Some "historical locations" as EDSM lists them I want to visit too, for example Star One that requires a 90ly jump to get there, and lots of other long range ones. Going on the very rim requires a lot of jumponium tho.

I know. I'm not sure how impressive getting to Beagle Point really is, anymore. Even the FDL and Sidewinder can be engineered to 34ly these days.

Yeah well my comment was meant as a joke. ;)

But you are correct, reaching BP isn't really a challenge anymore, jump range-wise. And since nowadays its not really about the challenge of reaching BP, its now even more about the journey itself, as it has been always for me at least. :)

Time for FDev to implement the Galactic Halo, then:

Also, i'm itching to see a system map of Cygnus X-3...
