I am actually more excited of the reborn Saud Krugers than some Krait variant and another pew pew ship.
Actually, I'm surprising myself with this bit right here too. I love my Krait dearly, but the SK changes have me really intrigued. I'm actually seriously considering the Beluga now. Prior to this, I didn't see the point of exploring in a Beluga, since it was crippled by slot restrictions, leaving only 7 unrestricted slots, which is what the AspX has. But now it will have
11. Eleven! That's like an Anaconda without the extra jump range, or the fast scooping. But since it steers like a scaled up Python, to me it's one of the more fun ships of that size class.
The biggest drawbacks (to me) are the scooping speed and the lack of downward viewing angles in the cockpit. However it makes up for the latter by having wide unrestricted viewing angles everywhere else. The scooping speed I think will be less of a problem in the new exploration system, since the pace is slowing down anyway, and you can park in the scooping zone while using the FSS (I think, I need to test this again). Plus with a huge fuel tank, I can sip fuel along the way without completely refueling for a long time, and then top up occasionally while investigating an interesting star system. That tank also facilitates fuel transfer if anyone needs it.
I spent the last couple of days re-engineering my Beluga and I've enjoyed flying it. I'm getting better at not scraping the slot too.
As an endurance and fleet support build, I'm currently working toward
this, but that's still in flux. I used to optimize for pure jump range, but these days I favor bringing all of the toys, having a comfortable power budget, running cool, and having nearly continuous thruster boosting. If I can do all of that and still jump 50 ly, then I'm happy.
