The solution to gankers, griefers, and murder hobos

Don't distinguish between CMDR's and NPC's. Make them all solid and put CMDR in-front of everyone's name.

If the GGMH's can't figure out who's human from who's NPC they'll get bored and stop. Worst case scenario is that the NPC's will give valid cmdr's cover. While the GGMH interdicts the NPC the valid cmdr gets away.

Brilliant!

Somebody doesn't know the lore.. Sorry but no. Even I, a preferably non-PvP person, thinks this is terrible.

Lorewise, members of the Pilot's Federation (i.e., human players) are considered a cut above the typical rank-and-file of those who fly for a government or corporation. This is why they have the rank of "commander" and a hollow square to differentiate themselves on the sensor readouts. It's a gameplay contrivance of course, but a well-established one.

I didn’t know this. Thanks for the explanation.

Yeah, I'm going to call on this one. The "cut above the the typical rank and file," though sounding suspicious, might have some merit. But to differentiate between the two to use solid and hollows is bunk.

Not when you consider that Frontier has to balance lore with gameplay.

It did work well, gameplaywise, when all boxes were opaque. Perhaps when a commander releases hardpoints it could be hollow? It was really quite an immersive experience, not knowing. Made me a lot more wary on the radar.

From the Kickstarter FAQ forum thread:

How does multiplayer work?
You simply play the game, and depending on your configuration (your choice) some of the other ships you meet as you travel around are real players as opposed to computer-controlled ships. It may be a friend you have agreed to rendezvous with here, or it may be another real player you have encountered by chance. All players will be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” – that is how they are distinguished from non-players – so you will be able to tell who is a player and who is a non-player easily.

OP. It is not a bad idea but I would favour another more compramised solution. Where all ships are solid on the scanner until the ship is scanned, where if a cmdr the icon is hollowed out as normal.
