Ships Make Cobra IV available to all players

I think it's about time that Frontier made the Cobra Mk. IV available to everyone who plays the game. I'm sure there are plenty of players who would love to get their hands on the ship for one reason or another, but weren't able to upgrade within the requisite time period, myself among them (though to be fair I don't think I'd even heard of the game until after Horizons came out). I think it would be good for Frontier's PR if they made the ship available to everyone anyway. I know that it was supposed to be an exclusive ship, but honestly it might have been better to give them exclusive sets of paint jobs and skins for their ships rather than just a unique ship. It's not really a very smart idea to give a select group of players access to a ship that you can see and fight anywhere in the Bubble.

I'd like to think I'm not the only one who has this opinion, and again, it would be really good for Frontier, would make them look good in the eyes of their player base, if they granted everyone full access to the ship by this point. It's been two years Frontier. At least consider it? Trust me, I'm certain it'll give you a fair bit more credibility in the eyes of your players.

Top Ship the CM4 is.
Sounds like you missed out on it though. Hard chese there old chum.
It is an exclusive to those who bought into the horizons update early when FD needed our help. If you were not there, no CM4 for you!

Exclusive means exclusive.

I agree in terms of immersion/realism that we are all flying around in space with fortunes in the bank yet aren't able to buy a ship which we see flying around. In real life, anyone wanting one would be able to buy one. Would make more sense to me had they come up with a different reward for early supporters.

But FD said it was exclusive at time of launch, for me it's important that FD do what they say they will do, so I think it should remain exclusive.

(And I only joined the game this year, love my Cobra MkIII and would love a MkIV. But fair's fair.)

By now this is thread #3265.2 about the Cobra Mk4?

You're honestly not missing out on much. Frontier made it an exclusive ship.
I gotta say, I must say it was a bit of a dumb decision to take such a popular line of ships to make one exclusive. But what can you do.

What would probably happen instead is:
People buy the cobra 4 en-masse, fly it around, say "Wow, this thing is as slow as molasses" and sell it again.

Well, even a slow ship, when kitted well and properly managed, can function pretty well. I hate how slow the Type-9 is, but it's still my trading ship of choice, especially after a bit of engineering to perk up it's FSD to make it actually USEFUL in the role that it's supposed to be best for "by lore". I love the Cobra Mk3 for its versatility, but just because the Mk3 is a good jack of all trades doesn't mean the Mk4 has to be. With a bit of elbow grease (fueled by the endless grind), the Mk4 could be a pretty good ship. I'd certainly like to at least be able to give it a try.

I can see your point, and respect your stance, but sometimes it's better for a company in the long term to not keep exclusive content as exclusive. I can't think of any games off the top of my head at the moment, but I remember playing a few games in the past where exclusive content was eventually made available to the game's general population. Plus, as you mentioned, it takes away from the immersion. I see Mk4's flying around every single time that go into an RES, and by all logic, it would just make sense for everyone to be able to get their hands on it by now. It was honestly a bad move on Frontier's part to offer a SHIP as an exclusive item over a special paintjob unlocked across all ships, and maybe some unique bobble heads and decals, but not a ship. Besides, how many times have they gone against what they've said in the past anyway? Personally, I think it's more important for them to fix their mistakes, like in this case, rather than sticking to their guns.

I know that opinions on the ship are mixed, but honestly I think the only way for players to know for sure if they are missing out or not, or for them to find out if the ship is good for them or not, is for them to actually be able to fly it. Besides, with the exception of the Capital Ships, we can pilot almost all of the types of spacecraft available in human space, it doesn't make any real sense for the Devs to keep this one behind a wall with the weak excuse of it being an "exclusive" (Which is really all that is. A weak excuse for why they haven't made it available for everyone yet when it really should be). I'm not asking for space legs, if those come along then they'll come along, if they ever do come along. I'm just asking for a FDev to throw a small bone that I'm quite certain would be easy enough for them to do, maybe a little bit of changed coding here and there. (I'm not a programmer, so I could be wrong, but still).

It would certainly be an excellent gesture of goodwill from them with how many times they've brought down the "Balance Hammer" on people's heads.

The only thing worse than broken promises is sticking to a bad decision for the sake of sticking to the bad decision.

My opinion, which is no way invalidates any of the fine people above and their opinion, is exclusive content in the gaming industry is bad for the industry. Few bought Horizons so they could get the CM4. Most purchased it for the whole landable planets thing.

We are happy when game companies add new features and gameplay with free content updates, yet those weren’t part of the deal that was made when we plopped our money down. Give us a custom decal and an exclusive paint job, but make the thing available to all.

And while all of that sounds nice and participation trophy-y, FDev did themselves no favors by literally saying it would be exclusive forever. It is hard to walk back from that. So while I personally see no harm, I also support the decision not to. That said, only a real ahole thinks the PS4 crowd got a fair deal. They didn’t.

I am a LEP owner and therefore have access to the Cobra mK IV.

I always support requests to make the MK IV available to everyone. I don't care at all about exclusivity and it has been exclusive for a long time now.

If FDev needs a good reason to appease some Mk IV owners who, for some weird reasons, do think exclusivity is important, then perhaps they could offer the Mk IV again with a new paid expansion.

But...... Why on earth would anybody want one ?????

Because some people like it. It definitely has its uses in early game.

It breaks your immersion seeing a ship out in the black that you can't have.

It breaks my immersion every time a Commander (including mine) dies and then is miraculously resurrected in station, instead of having to create a new Commander and start from scratch like we should have to -- you know, because we died.

Our personal "immersion" quirks are not a reason for something to be done or not done by a game developer.

...oh, and I want all of the kickstarter and alpha and beta perks as well. Because somebody thinks exclusivity is bad.

In case you didn't get the point of my post, I am against taking away the exclusivity of the Cobra Mk IV. Even if I couldn't buy the ship in-game (I can, as I have the lifetime pass), I would be against it.

Something something something, "paid content in 2019", Cobra IV re-release confirmed? [noob]

No. I don't have one either, I missed out too. Just like the Viper mkIV is to the Viper mkIII, the Cobra mkIV isn't all that special to begin with according to what I have heard about it anyway

They could do a star citizen, and sell the Cobra IV in the cash store for I unno, £7000 or something...

Yeah that would be great! Just a small multirole ship with 8 internals. If you like the handling and style of small ships and want one to just roam around, do missions, exploring, passengers, etc, there's nothing like the Cobra IV. Doesn't have to be the same ship, a clone would do! :)
