Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Agreed but, I changed my mind :D My AspX has a good jump range now (around 50ly - my DBX is doing 60 though) so I've swapped the AFMU for a cargo rack and, tomorrow, I'll be off.

See, this is what I like about this game: you can sail along doing the same stuff and getting all Zen about it when wham! summit like this kicks you right in the collector limpet. Before I go though, with just shy of 200m CR, I'm wondering whether to go Python or save more for the 'Conda. I'll do this tip off first and gather my thoughts en route.

Well, my normal idea about that is always - why either or?- Both. It is not as if your ships would loose value in ED, you can always sell them and get your money back. So this is asset, better to have asset than cash.

But how do I get a naval rank - this is what I want to know.

You do this by completing missions for the power you want to rank up with. E.g If you complete missions for a faction which is part of the Empire, you will see the bar for the naval rank go up as well. When that reaches 100%, you will at some point see a "linked" mission appear on the board, which is explicitly described as a naval mission. Complete this, and your rank will increase.

To continue ranking up, you then go through the process again, i.e complete missions for factions that are part of the Empire until the rank bar is at 100%, then find and complete a naval "linked" mission.

Edit: Having read your post again, I missed that you have "Rank: None 100%" with the Feds. This means you are ready to rank up - If you look on the mission boards in stations where there are Fed aligned factions, one of them should eventually spawn a Naval mission. This will be described as a navy mission, and it will have the "chain link" icon next to it to signify it is part of the ongoing rank process.

Ah yes, these are the missions which have a chain icon on their right hand side - I have seen them many times and they are in the "follow up mission" section. Well, it is about providing the navy with a lot of stuff - will take me a while to accomplish that. But good to know now, what I will have to do. I have rank NONE 100% with Federation and Empire navy, so I can do these mission now. I just checked, I don't have this with Alliance.

Well,I lean to Empire - when I arrive there, it is "welcome back, commander. Good to have you with us again" - they are polite and welcoming me. Federation on the other side is don't do this and don't do that and if you do, we will kill you. Rude and disgusting bullies.

The naval ranking missions got the chain descriptor added so that they would appear in that box which is always at the top and so be easier to spot, a lot of people were missing them in the clutter.

The good news is that while you are waiting for a ranking mission that is acceptable to you your rank percentage hasn't frozen so when you do achieve the next rank you could be part way through it, in the past some people had to rank up 2 or 3 times before they dropped below 100%.

Just to emphasize that rank up missions will contain navy or naval in the title, most chained will be ordinary follow up missions.

At some point I want enough Federation rank to visit Sol, however I have watched Blakes 7 and Star Trek Discovery so don't trust them.

You may not trust the Federation but there's no denying that Servilan is... charismatic. Actually, sexism be damned: she's hot. There, I said it. Send Travis to terminate me if I cause offense.

Sometimes it's really hard to understand men. What is special about her, I see nothing what would be any interesting about this woman, beside her bra size maybe. But otherwise?

She was a strong and powerful character in Blake's 7 - at a time when sexist conditions had most female roles as simpering love-interests or as tragic victims. She was also very striking in appearance with the cropped hair and extravagant costumes.

There was is a tendency amongst English males of a certain age to see powerful strong women as very appealing like for example Barbara Flynn in "A Very Peculiar Practice".

Fwiw, I didn't actually find her attractive as a character or in her character's appearance, just not my cup of tea - but she was a very strong female character in an age where that was rare, and that made her character compelling, even if you didn't actually like her. To be honest, the actual character of Servalan was very unpleasant, but that fitted the model of the Blake's 7 Federation very well: From that point of view, she was the perfect fit for the role :)

Good grief, I had begun to think I was the only person who had ever seen that series!! I think they might have usefully left it be after the first series though, it sort of lost it's way in my opinion after that. This was the programme where I remember a pair of nuns randomly doing outrageous things for no very good reason in the background occaisonally, wasn't it?

To this day, any pc / laptop I have gets referred to as a "rinky-dinky little computer" because of it :D

Wiki states the series was on from 1978 to 1981 - 13 episodes. I watched a compilation video of Servalan in this series and didn't find anything appealing about her role. I guess it is a generation issue - I was born in 1988 and never experienced a time when women were not accepted as equals - especially because I was born in Germany, where gender equality is a given and not something what would have to be achieved first.

Hmmm, guess that tendency didn't make it across the pond as we have yet to elect a female president. I wonder if that will happen in my lifetime? Coming up on 62 so it's probably not a safe bet. Oh well, there are more important things to think about. There are starving citizens on one of the planetary outposts in my home system that need food and supplies so I'll see what I can do about it later today. I'd do it now but the missus says we have to go paint something and I don't wanna get started only to have to cut the mercy missions short.

This is something I do as well - help to either avoid or stop famine and outbreaks. Especially in empire territory I find a lot of systems, where famine is rampant. Seems that people are not that much into the Empire (could it be because some operators there speak with a russian accent?). Anyway, these systems need help and it gives those missions purpose and pay off as well, because food delivery to famine systems or medicine deliveries to outbreak systems seem to provide a lot more reward than normal - reputation and money-wise.

54 episodes - 4 series of 13 episodes

... and yes Servalan was not an appealing character and to my mind was not particularly well acted or perhaps directed. However I do stand by my comments regarding her appeal to certain males.

Hmmm .. well I think that there is a very strong case for German males' predilection for strong women too - however I think that this area of discussion is not perhaps germane to the forum.

(B.T.W. I am not English. ;) )

Yep that's correct, once in every episode.

Well, from my experience german males do not come over as overly flirty or in the mood to romance females - they seemed to me to be rather pragmatic and check out the value of females as possible partners (at least if it is not just about a one-night-stand). So they tend to be attracted by smart women with a good job and ambition for a career - you could call this an appeal for strong women eventually, but for my generation this is the normal case. The rule in my generation is, you make it to wealth before you hit 30 or you will never achieve it. And so is the work culture in many western countries nowadays. You have to be smart and fast or you will go nowhere. It's brutal in a way, but you either go for it or you will find yourself on the loosing end of the game.

Dunno about the Russian or Slavic accents as I've found a few stations here where the security officer or what ever their title is has that accent. Indian or Pakistani too. A few American or Canadian accents along the way. Haven't found any others yet like French or Spanish or any of the Oriental accents. I'm in Federation space and we have our share of needy stations. It really wouldn't have mattered which major faction controls the part of space I was in when I found my home here. I just like this system since it offers pretty much everything I'm interested in and has a decent assortment of ship outfitting modules. I sometimes have to run to a close system for something but by and large everything I want is very close at hand.
