Not liking the new lighting at all.

It's taking a little getting used to, but I'm not hating it. Things just seem more "ambiently" lit.

It was clear from the first livestream demonstration of the 'new lighting' with before/after demonstrations that the lighting was also affecting the HUD. I commented on this, but I think nobody else realized its significance at the time.

It is, as you say, a filter effect applied to everything displayed, not selectively to the illuminated planetary and stellar elements of the game. And it was touted as 'new lighting.' Some of us commented that it looked very much like the post-image effects we applied to our screenshots.

New filtering would be a more appropriate description, although technically it is 'dynamic' in that it varies according to the system portrayed. But I have 'dynamic' filters available in photo processing which do very much the same thing.

It's not the new lighting system that was touted and we had hoped for ....... again [blah]

Remember the Beige Planet Issue? It took FD at least two years of ignoring posts, denial and eventually a correction ..... maybe longer

Yes...I think that they have made some general improvements to the actual lighting and volumetric effects as well, and much of that looks great. It’s just these overlays.

Since it’s just a 2D shader applied at the very end of the pipeline, it’d should be very easy to add a control for players to adjust the magnitude or turn it off altogether. Unless they’ve done something quirky and inflexible like the HUD matrix.

Well I hate it, gave me a headache after half hour. Everything looks washed out and blurred and can't see the hud properly. Lazy implantation washing a filter over the lot, and what's with that lens flare all around the inside of my cockpit like I've been smoking?
Ohh and arring about how great this was? I was looking forward to this. Its worse, far worse.

here's a couple of screenshots
1) Antialiasing MLA4 plus 1.0 supersampling in supercruise uneven blocky lines and still jaggies : https://www.dropbox.com/s/ashfof3486o7cfq/aa.JPG?dl=0
2) The blue planet is now black : https://www.dropbox.com/s/8r3fv993l690sti/IMG_0675.JPG?dl=0
3) The asteroids are now black in daylight, they had brown textures i could see a few days ago at same res : https://www.dropbox.com/s/0wsccymo9as5s7w/Screenshot_1044.bmp?dl=0

I also have a frame and input lag back when in combat even when my gpus are only at 40% util

Is it we now have a single graphics engine that's aimed at the console sweet spot. I went from a few days ago having a great framerate, locked at 60 and 4k experience, to having my pc look like a ps4. I have a ps4 but i dont play elite on it.

I also see a lot of blockyness on other ships in the game almost like they are high compression jpeg images it's almost like the game is being rendered down in resolution on my 4k display. I dont know if anyone else suffered from this during the Beta.

It is not a console issue as things look worse there too. Also the minimum PC specs are below what the base PS4 and XBox specs are.

I've never noticed the pattern of "scratches" in my AspX before now, but they are shown up very clearly with the new lighting, especially round K and G stars. It does very much look like I've had a 40-a-day habit in there for the past 6 months. (The fact that it shows the pattern completely also reveals that fact that it is a regular repeating pattern, which, although I would have guessed it was, is a bit like showing the audience behind the curtain and revealing the trick)

I have a console, and I can tell you it's hitting way below that sweet spot. Right now it's the most awful-looking game in my collection. If ED on your PC looks like a PS4, then ED on my PS4 looks like a PS2! I'd rather watch horse balls shrink in the cold than look at these horrendous flickering shaders, extreme aliasing, and macroblock jpeg planets....

That's a shame Stelthie, it really is looking stunning on my rig in VR. I have Gamma around 75%

Is that 75% brightness for HUD in VR?

Yikes anything above the minimum one pip burns my eyes out!

----

Side note, others suggest it is not as crisp. VR being at a lower resolution anyway is likely not effected in the same way.

In VR I usually have my HUD brightness at 10%, but after the update everything seemed much darker. Had to up it to 70%.

Sorry, not agreeing with the PS2 comment. Most definitely a ridiculous comparison.

I seriously had a headache and had to take the HMD off when I finally got on last night. After 30 mins my head was pounding, the light is crazy.

Anyways, Q: Are you using the EDProfiler to change the Gamma? Or something else ?

Nope, Dr Kaii's profiler doesn't work with the new update (as far as I am aware)

Am back home, give me a sec, I'll check my settings..

Edit- Ok so Gamma is around 70%, would obviously lower it if I want things to be darker.

HUD Brtightness is set to around 75%

Everything on Ultra, looks way better in VR on my rig. Also running great on a 1080TI
