the FSS, watching paint dry....

So anyone else find this incredibly boring? I think I'm going to quit while I'm ahead here, way too many controls to map and rather confusing to boot.[where is it] Heading back to bubble to try out the new mining. Hope you die hard explorers have fun!

None of anything you said makes sense.

Boring? More boring than flying around HOPEING for the signal source youre looking for will spawn?
Too many controls to bind? Ive mapped 4 new bindings for the FSS - What are you on about?
Confusing? Which part..moving the slider left or moving the slider right?

Honestly people wil literally complain about anything on these forums.

These forums are pure cancer.

To actually complete the exploration content, you still have to go to the body to shoot at it.
And while the DSS waiting game was terrible, I'm not convinced this is any better.
Bizarre, FD gets rid of DSS scanning (yay), adds FSS blind bobbing (boo).

This is my gripe with it, you actually spend way too much time in the FSS and then you still have to go to every planet to finish the process, actually take 10 time longer to survey a system than the old way of doing it.

If you haven't mapped the controls you have no way to say whether it's boring or not. There are a number of controls needed, but I haven't seen anyone else offer an idea to provide the same functionality with fewer controls.

It´s not only boring, it´s implemented in the most complicated way. I really tried to have fun, even when I said I will never touch the game again because of that bad implementation - I tried, I don´t like it, it´s unnecessary, it doesnt make any sense, and it´s a huge step back for the game.

When we will get space legs I bet FD finds a reason not to use WASD but the whole Keyboard for just walking around.

Well going by some of the respondents here, most would complain that setting up WASD is too hard and they already use those keys for something else ;)

Nopes.

Probing planets is a new layer... When you scan planets via the , you get exactly all the data you got prior to this update. Also, scanning allows you to see if there are any geological or biological hotspots on the planet. If you don't see that, there is no point going to it to probe it.

I wonder how the few people upset at the FSS would have felt if the last few years everyone else would have spammed the exploration board with "OMG the godhonk and pointing at planets is so boring. Absolute turd sandwhich. terrible stuff. OMG OMG OMG. I am going to quite the game, so terrible is it!"

I guess they would eventually have said:"Hey, if that is your opinion, feel free to play something else or just make a single suggestion and stop making the same topic about it. Just add your opinion to the one that exists, spamming helps nobody."

Ok I watched this video (below) from OA to help me better understand the process and I've come to the same conclusion as before, it's a mess and a huge time sink compared to what we used to have.
Simply jumping into a System, HONKing, quick check of the System Map to see if an ELWs or such like where there and then decide to stay or Jump- Job Done.

Now it seems you have to spend half an hour faffing around blindly scrolling around to see what's in the System, now this is alright for those that want to do that, after all the Option is great...but do we still have the Option to do it the old way? It took me long enough to get around before and as a father of two my play time is extremely limited, but this "new" discovery mechanic means 10x longer at least per system and that's just no fun and such a time sink it's not even worth it.

...and seriously, firing those probes off as seen at 5:30 in the video, why are we reverting to 8bit graphics from the 1980s?! those look horrific in game, I'm bitterly disappointed and as an avid fan of Elite for many years this is such a shame, a once great game has been turned into a convoluted mess it seems.

You have three axes and two buttons, indeed. OMG the complexity. I also hate tying my shoe laces, it is way too complex compared with velcro. I gave up after a few hours and threw my shoes away.

Sorry, but then you just dont understand it yet. :) In the new system, you can honk, check the freq bar and instantly see if there is an ELW. It even literally says 'Earth-like world' at the bottom of the screen. Check 1:45 for example, it says 'high metal content world' at the right bottom corner. In other words, if there is no squigly bit on the frequency bar where he has the cursor, there is no high metal content world. The ELWs are higher up the bar. Take a look for yourself. They are always in the same place, so nothing there? No ELW.

i prefer the new system and heres why; i dont have to fly off to something to find out if its a waterworld or earth like anymore. i learn that in the fss. i also see if there is anything i want to scan in it AT A GLANCE. no earth likes nor ammonia nor water worlds then i dotn need to zoom in and out. idk but i thought you still got a little money for the honk. if theres nothing worth mapping i dont need to fly off to find out, and so i can be gone from the system fast as a honk glance and sometimes i have to wait now for refuel. but im getting extremely good at fly by refuelling with my 6A fuel scoop. i can actually totally refuel one jump even before i am far enough away from the other side of the primary that temps are low enough for me to jump. no time wasted seeing if the blue thing i needed to (old) DSS was a water world, earth like, or just a blue high metal. no guessing if a white ball is an ammonia or an icyball. certainly no time wasted flying out there.

since the adjudication server stopped ignoring me i have actually made more jumps in a short time than ever before.

and if the fss is boring, with its ready made tags for where interesting things are or are not in system, then ignore it. honk, pick a target in left panel and fly there anyways. if you get close you still identify stuff. you can use eyes to see moving stars and realise thats a close planet.

the odd thing is, its mining worries me. i have an asp ex set up as armed mining ship. but with all this core and subsurface stuff, if i need to add modules then mining becomes far less viable in it. because if i dump the shield i have little chance surviving any attack unless i can evade interdiction on the way to sell, and if i need to dump weapons the shield will only buy a little time which is not as long as the fsd will take to come online, and if i have to dump both for mining missiles then the whole thing wont be viable for all 3 reasons: cant survive finding anything at the mining site, nor on the trip back, and cant go another site if the hold isnt full because theres always pirates who scan you when you drop in and you can no longer fight your way out or beat them.

but since im about 15000 ly away from the bubble its all got to wait until i get back and see. i just dont see how the new system can be boring if the old one wasnt even more. no more 200000 ls trips in SC just to DSS a world which could be earth like or water world and could just be a high metal which wasnt worth the wasted time.

EDIT: oh and did i mention that means it makes it MORE worth it when there is an ELW that far away - because not only can you see it right away once you zoomed in to id it... you can lcok in IN THE FSS not needing to go to system map and note the name cos the select is playing up anf have to back out find it in left panel and target. you can just target in FSS and head for it, and at the end you get even MORE credits than before because map it also.

You're funny, you act as if explorers didn't proclaim their dissatisfaction with the ADS.
The exploration forum is full of many years of fantastic ideas from many different CMDRs to replace the ADS. AFAIK, no one asked for the FSS.
Don't know why you insist on a "us vs them" attack.

I agree. i think we're in the minority. Seems a shame to me to be flying deep outside the bubble enjoying the glory of the universe to spend in-cockpit time playing what is a 2D mini-game.

Hat left and right for tuning up and down for zoom in and out. Second trigger for select target. I haven't needed anything else yet and I have a hand free for coffee.

I'll add a few more when I get around to probing.

It's not as Instant as before and including the 1980s 8bit Probes you have to fire at the planet it simply takes longer, I get it, some people like this new mechanic but I just cannot get my head around it,sorry.

Again... Probing is a NEW LAYER to the mechanics... All the data that you could get before this patch, is done without having to travel to the planet. You should ONLY travel to a planet if it shows that it has Geological or Biological hotspots. There is no real point probing planets that do not have those features.

I agree with you completely on this.

The FSS is tedious to use. I'm not really much of an explorer, but I don't think I'll even try it again it's so awful.

So I'll just stick to the bubble and scan Nav beacons.
