the FSS, watching paint dry....

If you got fooled by the planet noises wasnt that skill issue? That metal world probably tricked everybody at one time or another but identifying it was on the players ability.

I absolutely LOVE the new FSS for true exploration and discovery. There are some rough edges that could be tweaked (I don't understand why we even need an analysis mode separate from "cockpit" mode), but the process of using a "science station" to map out a solar system is very rewarding IMO, and much better than sitting in supercruise for endless periods of time to "scan" a system the old-fashioned way.

But think how much better it would be if we had the old honk aswell. Then er..false explorers can honk out planets but true explorers would be able to hunt down signals and things with the telescope game. That way everybody can have their fun and we could both use the probes.

Why not? What possible good can come from steamrolling over the system that was established for so long?

To quote Pilate, "What is written remains written." It's water under the bridge, now merged with the ocean. You ain't putting it back in the bottle, so like or lump it, the new system is here to stay, I believe.

I mean, you can still always improve stuff.
Having visual tweaks for it not to hurt so much to use would be a nice start.

I'm currently about 1,300ly out in a 30ly ship, on my way to the cats paw nebula (not been there before), and I'm now regularly seeing only partially explored systems.

I miss the ADS, I want to see a list of unexplored bodies & what they look like. At this stage most are just distant ice planets or gas giant moons, the gas giant moons are usually what I'm interested in for their tortured & deformed surfaces and volcanic activity.

One nice perk I've discovered is that I can travel to a previously tagged (but unexplored for me) gas giant & DSS it as before, and once I get close enough all it's moons get automatically DSS'd too. I can then look in the sysmap for anything interesting on all the moons. So far I've DSS'd dozens (first discoveries) but only mapped two. One was because it had fumeroles, the other was on the off-chance there was some other POI on it. There wasn't.

The FSS Scanner Screen is the same clunky mess it was in beta, although it's nice to see that all USSs are really easy to find if you are tuned into that frequency - I'd like to see that functionality replicated for all frequencies.

The FSS makes DSSing a system so easy it's boring, and because I'm not usually anywhere nearby I am not motivated to then travel to the body to map it so I'm tending to just travel towards the gas giants hoping they will have interesting moons, something ironically I could do without having to travel to them before.

So after using the system with actual untagged bodies rather than in the bubble my opinion hasn't changed, I still want my ADS back. The new system manages to be both way too easy, undermining any kudos for those previously tagged distant binary systems (this kudos will still apply to any mapped tags though) and also too frustrating for even my belligerent tenacity to bother with any more than I must.

Looking forward to getting into the virgin (completely untagged) systems so I can just spam my name on streaks of stars across the galaxy.

But think how much better it would be if we had the old honk aswell.

Are you sure it's not still there? When I jump into a system and honk, I get the same old number of bodies discovered.

I'm currently trying to figure out the myself, but from what I understand it (much like the new mining functionality), the olde way of doing it is still there?

There is still a honk, it provides different information than before. The main issue for me is that it no longer automatically adds the bodies to the sysmap, nor does it populate the nav panel with unexplored targets. The difference becomes more apparent once the player is out into untagged systems, in the bubble it's not really an issue because all the systems have already been fully discovered.

It's misleading. Unless another CMDR has surface scanned a given object, it won't appear after honk anywhere except in the FSS (as a blue circle hidden in a waterfall of blue circles). You just see stars elsewhere.

I think if somebody has already scanned it you get a system map that looks pretty much as before. So bubble dwellers see all the planets but deep space you see nothing

Edit: or what he said above. Im just going from what i read on here

Ahhh ok - I stand corrected. I'm still trying to figure the darned thing out.

Ya Me too, When I log in or change ships I need to go into analysis mode to honk a system. After that I can jump and honk as of old ways. I haven't been to a new system yet to see how this plays out, and if I need to go back in analysis mode. I did map one planet in a known system. It will come soon I hope.

So anyone else find this incredibly boring? I think I'm going to quit while I'm ahead here, way too many controls to map and rather confusing to boot.[where is it] Heading back to bubble to try out the new mining. Hope you die hard explorers have fun!

As a diehard explorer, I will generally avoid using the FSS mechanics out in the black. DW2 will be... "interesting."

20 odd body DSS'ed in about 2-3 minutes instead of about 15 minutes or A LOT more if one of the stars was at 320,000 LS.

Ohhhh Yeeeeeeah, totally a boring waste of time.

Bound mouse movement+left n right for zoom, 1 axis on stick, spacebar. It works well.

U do not need all the controls.

I like this.

Stuff like moving while using it, would be nice.

I think you mean "FSSed." The old system map took a couple seconds.

I'd prefer an optional workaround like needing an extra module for getting black bodies after the honk. That way I could at least still pilot my ships around while exploring and use the new FSS when I felt like it instead of being more or less forced to use it.

Tedious is my most apt description of the FSS "gameplay" for me. "Exploration" isn't really on the list, but is an end from the means.
