the FSS, watching paint dry....

Wait... If they haven't been discovered before, they don't show up after a honk? Like they use to?

I'm beginning to see the problem here. A bunch of tourists who think they are actual explorers are mad that all the tourist information centers have been closed, so no more free maps and pamphlets.

Leave the exploration to the professionals; go enjoy the plentiful amount of tourist attractions available in the Bubble :p

(I just woke up not long ago, hence the unfiltered snark)

I like how everyone is so certain so soon.

I'll decide in 2 months.

This basically. Although surely something that encourages searching through a system for potentially interesting things is more like exploration than honking and then flying towards the blue bits. I think the fss will end up with more life in it.

I did a lot of Exploring in the Beta, I went to see some 'clouds', then went on to Jaques Station & then back to the bubble- scanning all the way.

I wanted to get all the ly* things sorted out while playing Beta.
So much so that when Beta ended I didn't want to go back to Exploring in the then 'Live' game, so I didn't until launch.

I'm currently on a trek out about 16k LY's in the black, I want to try things out with the Codex.

Then I'll return just before the DWE2 trip starts.....if anything sorts out the 'men from the boys (women from the girls)' then the DWE2 trip will.

That's when players will truely get to know how they feel about the new FSS!

Edit: * Realyy???? the censor doesn't allow the word 'n i g g l y'!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do the people that claim that "Finally the new method allows us to find something" realize that there was nothing to find implemented in the game before?

That little spectrometer near the bottom of the FSS tells you what is in the system. If you run the dial, you'll see a description in the lower right of what kind of planets are found in each location on the graph. After awhile, you'll know exactly what's in the system without even having to dial - signals way to the left, rocky planets and ice worlds just left of center, ELWs and WWs about 3/5 across, and gas giants further to the right. It's too bad this little spectrometer isn't part of the "analysis HUD", so we still need to open the FSS, but you don't need to scan every planet to get a sense of what's in the system.

I'm aware of that, thanks. I use the sysmap to see what they look like, I'm not all that interested in what its composition is, just what it looks like. There is nothing in the FSS Scanner Screen that tells me how pretty a thing is quite like looking at a picture of it.

It's not stopping me playing, but I see no good reason to remove a thing I was perfectly happy to use when those that disliked it can just not equip one. Seems unnecessarily churlish.

So anyone else find this incredibly boring? I think I'm going to quit while I'm ahead here, way too many controls to map and rather confusing to boot.[where is it] Heading back to bubble to try out the new mining. Hope you die hard explorers have fun!

It's not as offensive as I initially thought it would be but it is very tedious and I cannot for the life of me understand those who thought it would add complexity to the game.

I've sent 10-12 hours playing since the update dropped and the fss is already muscle memory.

To be honest, the new method makes the System Map almost redundant now, with my method of Exploration. The only occasions I look at it now is to click on the ELW/WW/Ammonia worlds that I want to target for a round of Planetgolf.

I really like it. It adds a huge amount of depth to the, and come on lets face it, honk and jump "exploration" process. It feels like im genuinely exploring and not cheating.

PS - im someone, who back in the day, used to quite enjoy eyeballing stuff with the basic discovery scanner.

I am sure they added new stuff, but the geological surface features were already there, just a bit tedious to find and are only revealed if the planet was scanned. Few people scanned basic rock or ice planets and therefore don't know if they had features.

Technically you don't even need to do that - you can target a body when zoomed into it in FSS mode. There's a button mapping for that. I tend to use it for targetting that AW/ELW/Terraformable HMC that I'll definitely be probe mapping after I completely scan the system. Or for that lovely looking icy moonlet with those deep looking canyons I'm just about to visit. ;)

I was casual explorer. Three times I attempted going to SagA* (last one was a success), two times I attempted going to Colonia (no luck so far). I had some smaller range trips but all had the common thing - overwhelming boredom after first 1k LYs. Drop-honk-scoop-system check while fuel-jump away. And that's all. System after system nothing to do but loading system map and seeing it contains just rocky bodies. And when you spot something interesting like WW or ELW (maybe ammonia or nicely colored gas giant) you then spent 15 minutes supercruising to get into abysmal scanner range to take a scan and learn it was high metal content world that looked almost as ELW...

New system on the other hand - no cherry picking after honk. Now you honk and leave or honk and scan. And that part was speeded up considerably. Now whole system can be scanned within few minutes. Equal to time you had to spent just to get to nearest planet in old system. With new mechanics I stopped caring for ELW only. back then it was so tedious, boring and time consuming to get a scan that I prioritized just high value targets. No high value target? .

Now? I just stop, power up scanner and after few clicks I get full system scan. All rocky bodies? Pfft, this is my 42nd low value system. But scanned fully. Every 16 bodies, even that B 1 A moon at 126k Ls away that wouldn't even be looked at previously. No ELWs? No worries, those 42 fully scanned systems will bring nice credit as well.

And as a final - there's a feeling of mystery. What's in the box? Just rocky / icy bodies? Or maybe ammonia? New scanning mechanics is way better than old one. The need of extra few buttons to bind - <shutupandtakemymoney.meme>

Thanks, I didn't know it did that.....a bit more fine tuning done now!

It does not. It's a puzzle game for 4 year olds. You just point at the clearly marked blobs and there you go, have a bag of goodies.

The main reason why some people like it is simply because it guarantees you will find things (which in itself is not such a bad thing), but the process itself is a repetitive tedious abomination, and involves no actual exploration.

I´m just confused about some things. To begin with, I hadn´t even binded the mode switch (between combat and explo, or whatever they are called) cause i didn´t know there´s that new function. I could enter fss screen somehow nonetheless. Then I move the dial to tune signals, I think I have tune them, then I try to zoom and I get the message thta adaptive zoom failed. That´s the end of the experience for me. I got to zoom and scan one planet last night, but I don´t know how I did it.
I´m not complaining about the new system, mind you, I´m honestly asking for help cause i can´t understand it for the love of mine. So, if any of you guys is so kind to explain me.... Do i need to target the planet in anyway other than trying to zoom on it?

Posts like this are repetitive tedious abominations....

It´s not only boring, it´s implemented in the most complicated way. I really tried to have fun, even when I said I will never touch the game again because of that bad implementation - I tried, I don´t like it, it´s unnecessary, it doesnt make any sense, and it´s a huge step back for the game.

When we will get space legs I bet FD finds a reason not to use WASD but the whole Keyboard for just walking around.

Something like this?

Before I used to Explore.......& watch TV while doing so. Being able to 'multi-task' both jobs with ease.

Now, I'm concentrating on the game soo much I'm missing what's happening on TV!

No you don't need to target first.

I think you are doing the right thing .. but need to be accurate, where you aim, before zoom in.

I see a small extra dot that appears inside the main reticule, and indicates your zoom will be successful. There are also sensitivity sliders (in bindings) that might help you aim more easily.
