Whats the verdict? How does the new update play in VR?

Thanks TorTorden.

I am trying to work our the steps to reproduce the bugs I’m getting so I can report them. I’m not even sure it’s not related specifically to the ship I’m in which is the DBX. I’ll get back to the bubble tonight and try it in another ship if I’ve worked out how to make them happen on purpose!

There are still some left/right visual mismatches which are vaguely uncomfortable to look at. Most noticeable in the surface map overlay as you approach a landable planet in analysis mode.

I've been noticing this as well. It's a bit jarring.

Additionally, I've noticed some other "oddities" while in VR. For example:

When I'm docked at a station, I turn my ship lights on, the little buildings in front of me "pop" out as if they've just been inflated very quickly. It's like a weird Nintendo speech bubble kinda thing. It happens very quickly and looks normal afterwards but it's super weird when it happens.

Occasionally, some HUD menus such as the commodities list start to get funky. Some of the lines will start to wiggle around or have a weird visual effect. It's almost like an old screen saver with a magnified spot moving around.

I've started to wonder if my headset(Vive) is having problems but I'm not seeing anything like this in other games that I play.

Thanks TorTorden.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread. It happens to me when I'm in my DBX and switch from DSS mode to FSS. I'm too far out in the Big Deep to change ships but I should try my primary account. Too busy with other stuff at the moment...

I'm in the camp where everything is way to bright, (Rift)

In game:-
Gamma set to Min
HUD set to Min

In the nvidia ctl panel I have been reducing the saturation and brightness down, you need to have the HMD active otherwise it does not display the pannel.

In the advanced tab I have also set the range to full 0-255 instead of 16-255(default)

The changes seem subtle but i think for me at least it's a bit less bright YMMV.

Sounds like you are encountering some of the visual artefacts produced by SteamVR's recently added motion smoothing (which can be disabled in settings) -- Oculus users, who have had the same thing (called ASW) for ages, will be well familiar with the effect.

Read thread and throwing my VR findings into ring given I had my first go at the new release after spending the last couple of nights checking/ensuring my VoiceAttack, X52Pro, ED keybindings are all good, along with adding new for Codex, FSS and DSS. Have a fun time last night out from Gnosis to try some exploration.

Though some findings from my experience:
  • Visuals/color very washed out... when I launched off Gnosis and looked back at the megaship, I was like... ewwww! The ship was very bright and had an aliased thin halo around all lines on the ship. I fixed this problem by utilizing Dr Kaii's darker tonemap which ships with ED Profiler.
  • HUD is ED vanilla orange. I use ED Profiler's custom colorizer for the cockpit, but with the new release, the HUD in the viewport now is only ED default orange. Likely its directly due to the new update given the new features added to the HUD itself, but hopefully that will be fixed at some point.
  • FPS in VR was quite poor. I tried ED Profiler Ultra VR and was hitting less then 20 fps... unplayable. I reset back to my custom and hit avg around 45, but curious how folks get to 90 fps? I have 1080 ti, and i5 7600 OCed to 4.7ghz. Granted I do run latest SteamVR beta, OVR Drop, G19, and VR FPS monitor, so perhaps there is some extra overhead there. I can play at 45 fps, but would be curious if good visuals are capable with this hardware hitting 90 fps?

As for galaxy map in VR, the key is to pan up above the grid plane of view... this will allow u to choose systems easily. I use my X52Pro stick and twist to navigate the Galaxy Map, while also use the throttle POV for directional movement on the map. I also use this same configuration for the FSS, though tuning is done via the throttle top wheel.

I put on the Rift as I was gonna enter a ring and do some mining...And all I can say is WOW!
The new Mining gameplay fits perfectly for VR, flying around asteroird sending pulses out trying to find the "big one"! It all made me feel like Fett being chased by Kenobi :)

It hasn’t happened to me once tonight and I was still in my DBX. I didn’t know about switching from combat mode to analysis mode and I had key binding issues (the x52 default profile didn’t exist until I tried something on Reddit). There does seem to be an issue that you can bind an input to scanning that still works when you are in the other mode and the game will let you do it. I bound secondary fire and enter FSS mode to the same key and it didn’t stop me. I took me a while to work our why every time I entered FSS I deployed a heat sink lol.

I think what happened to me and probably to you is through some weird key binding issues we have navigated ourselves into some sort of weird switching state in the game code that shouldn’t be possible. If you can reproduce the issue then definitely report it.

The one thing I didn’t do tonight was press ‘o’ to open the codex.... it could be that is why I’m not having issues anymore!

The Gal map works nice with the X-56! The left and right mouse sticks I will call them works the gal map by default. You Can use the sticks to move around, select your destination and get to the tab that allows you to select things. With the X-55 I was screwed.

Thanks for the info. I'll give that a try.

did not that much testing. A bit inside and outside a station. Mapping a few planets. Overall I must say I am happy. Visuals and clarity is maybe a bit better now. Performance is definately better. Much smoother.

Landed back in UK and spent the day setting up the rig - switched out the 980ti for a 1080, updated drivers and software and installed the Samsung Odyssey. Didn’t play the beta, so have no comparison, but performance seemed pretty sweet with high graphics settings.

The only thing I noticed was dropping out of the game every time I came out of hyperspace into a new system. It only lasts maybe half a second but did it each time. What could be causing that? Is that a network issue?

Thanks.

EDIT: no issues this morning, so I’m thinking network issue.

Interesting that not many people are reporting this, in fact general feedback seems to its smoother. However I too have noticed an FPS drop, I’ve had to lower all my settings to get performance back. I run an older architecture to you i7 3770 overclocked to 4.5ghz with a 1080ti Over an Oculus rift cv1.

I would guess network, or some windows hinky ness, I assume the machine had been left un powered for a while so probably some background updates seeping in.

Hi guys performance is worse for me to. Struggling to hit 90 in SC again in certain scenes with same settings etc.
Don't get me wrong I love the new lighting just a shame about the hit.

I hope it's addressed as the lowered settings don't look nearly as good imo.

I lowered hmd from 2 to 1.75 and now back to 90 fps. All else same with ultra and no aa.

Only large drop is when looking at the fps monitor where it backs down to 45fps

Game Play in VR

Aside from a few blips and freezing, it seems to remain very immersive and an absolute rush to play in VR. I still have a lot to learn, but I find myself trying new maneuvers I don't think I could have conceived of with a flat screen.

My cat seems to be a bit annoyed with it as she likes to sit atop of the seat back when I spend time on my computer. The dangly cord was fun at first, one time nearly yanking my VR set off my head, but now it's just something that pokes at her...

Suck it up I say.

Getting horrible performance out at Colonia.

Is it normal to see dozens of ships waiting to dock and like every single landing road active nearly all the time.

Performance in the hanger seems fine, but outside with all these ships, not ao much. In fact it hung at one point with the hour glass symbol. Came back eventually.

Will do some more testing tomorrow. Took me most of tonight to setup my keybindings.
