the FSS, watching paint dry....

I very much like the FSS principle, after finding my personal optimum Control setup.

However, I've been an advocate of letting the Legacy Discovery Scanner and its mechanics in place untouched for those that prefer SuperCruising to perform a DSS or just want that quick overview of a System.

And using a system that knows where signal sources, what those signal sources are but doesn't show it to you until you select the frequency you want to "discover" and then click on that spot where the scanner knows that a signal is makes you feel like an explorer?
How can a scanner not know what frequency a signal has when that scanner knows where that signal is while at the same time it knows exactly what frequencies are in the system. That makes absolutely no sense.

I feel like I have to use a system created by somebody who thinks I have an IQ somewhere in the region of room temperature (in degrees Celsius) and needs some clicking around as an distraction. "Push that button and you get a bit of food you like. Good boy, here is your banana."
Or designed by somebody who thinks I still like a game of peek a boo and apparently assumes that I have the same cognitive capabilities like an infant.

The FSS system is actively hiding available information from the user.

It doesn't feel like exploring, it feels like "Minigame because some players complained about instant revealed system map so let's just hide the map for the sake of hiding it." It breaks the 4. wall so hard that any amount of suspense of disbelief, imagination, RP and other good will doesn't work for me.

The words you are looking for are "Skinner Box". :(

I really am not a fan of the new scanning system. Perhaps it will grow on me as I get more experienced with it; but for now, it’s awful. At least in my opinion anyway. :-(

The new FSS is the first time I have found a use for the big rotary dial on the top of the X52 pro throttle. Set this to absolute tuning with a small deadzone and tuning is very simple and fast. I can see this would be really tedious without some sort of rotary dial.

If we're going to use this thing hundreds or even thousands of times for exploration, couldn't they have come up with something a little deeper, more interesting to use and - dare I say it - involving some actual entertaining game-play?

As anything 'deeper' would take some time to learn, let alone, use, the 'I must have the honk back so I can see pretty planets instantly on my system map' crowd would be even more upset. This is literally a no win situation for FDev.

Oh, and before someone says (as they already have done), "but if they kept the honk then there would be choice as to whether to use the new or old system or not", then that would circumvent the whole point of having an exploration mechanic in the first place.

Finally, to those saying 'they should have come up with something better', then what? It's a space game, so anything anyone's going to come up with is going to be something along the lines of "well, let's have a scanner and some probes...".

I guess I should check out some YouTube instructional videos on using the new scanning process. Has anybody any recommendations?

One request though: please do not recommend any of Obsidian Ant’s videos. I cannot stand that guy’s voice. He always sounds like he thinks he’s talking to a bunch of 2-year-olds. If he really talks like that, then I wonder how many times he’s been punched in the face. It really grates on me. >.<

Watching paint dry......sounds much more like the old system to me. Not surprising all of the God-honk lovers are here adding to the whinge fest.

There is enough whine in this thread to establish a Cellar Door IMHO.

There are no probes in ED.

Interesting... those certainly look like probes being launched [haha]

I dont think it matters how clever or deep the mini game is, its in the wrong place. We already paid our dues as explorers even getting to the system let alone making us jump thru hoops like that. Its a grind, i cant see it as anything but a couple minutes tacked onto the front of every system. I got places to be that are already 1000s of ly away and im ocd about scanning everything everwhere i go. I cant stand it.

Imagine being trapped in an elevator with Yamiks.... :)

I got an idea. Fiddly things we dont want to do get automated. Like docking. So why not have an exploration computer? Let it auto tune and zoom for you somewhere close to how fast it can be done by an experienced player and give the thing a slot restriction and weight penalty. And make it work on the fly so you can be investgating the first worlds while its scanning out the rest.

So much rep for lateral thinking.

HELL YES. I would love the fss if i had an fss computer that automatically went though and did the panning and clicking for me.

Please, i beg you, take some rewards out of the FSS in exchange. Make it give me nothing at all except the nav panel or system map.

EDIT: This could actually be the start of a compromise that would stick with frontiers FSS only new direction. Would require more work than simply putting back the ads module and function though.

... Even disabling the honk out of FSS would be okay. Youd be forced to stop if that is important to someone somewhere, and could still be encouraged to look around the fss for some reason if its so mandatory. Actually that's ridiculous but hey good idea to brainstorm.
