the FSS, watching paint dry....

Overall it's so much better. But I don't like how if I tune a specific frequency it doesnt at least hint at what direction it's coming from.

I never liked the old honk. But you have a problem understanding that is possible for someone to want the best of both worlds. And i never had a problem travelling to planets and make eye contact. Having said that, i dont have a problem with the dss.
Hard for you to accept, i know.

The old honk was boring, but had good features that no one mentions now, because he is automatically targeted by other people.

I asked you a question to see if you had an actual point to make or were simply moaning for its own sake.

I have my answer.

Sorry if you feel you've been "targeted by other people".

Yes it does give directional guides, but you have to get within a certain arc distance of the target before they appear. This is to add a feeling of being a human being searching rather than simply following a target lock like an automaton following a script.

You can use the orbital plane for orientation, if a signal is way off, it most probably orbits the neighboring star or is on an odd orbit for a different reason, but it works most of the time.

I got an idea. Fiddly things we dont want to do get automated. Like docking. So why not have an exploration computer? Let it auto tune and zoom for you somewhere close to how fast it can be done by an experienced player and give the thing a slot restriction and weight penalty. And make it work on the fly so you can be investgating the first worlds while its scanning out the rest.

I finally got around to trying this out last night, and I like it so far. Exploration is now more of an activity than the previous honk>jump grind, and the handling of signal sources is so much better.

I hope a similar sort of hidden object minigame can be added for surface mining or archaeological prospecting.

Those "Explorers" who like to discover and tag stellars bodies at a standstill will just LOVE the incoming patch with the brand new "Extended FSS" ! You'll be able to discover and tag every single body in the MW from your first Sidey without even having to undock from Eravate ! Just by playing that stupid point n' click telescope minigame.
Isn't that coool ? No more soooo booooring flying to explore !
Enjoy it..."Explorers" !

Yeah this to be fair. Its for people that couldnt before so now they get it easy. Real slap to the chops for the players that were getting on with it and happy

^ Well now that this thread has officially jumped the baby, I'm outta here. I'll be enjoying these new exploration tools while you all practice your clever quips :D

Clever quips are my coping mechanism.

Incidentally, I'm glad the FSS stopped me playing because now I don't have to deal with starlight changing the colors of my HUD. So much wrong with this update.

Just turned in a little bit of exploration data at Jaques, a quick trip out to SagA* and back, with added dogleg to to get off a straight line. Started the round trip after 3.3 dropped so had to make do with connection issues, like the rest of us!

Every system FSS'd and some DSS'd for landings, quite a lot of fun for me so getting ready to head for the Abyssal Plain having swapped ships.

I guess I'm to old to dislike the new mechanic, it means I can scan complete systems and only fly out to visit the stuff that really interests me!

Tough. I'm sure everyone currently enjoying FSS is gonna read this and uninstall the game.

No seriously, the previous exploration mechanics were barely "mechanics" and extremely repetitive.

Maybe you consider "honk -> jump -> honk -> potentially DSS some planets by flying towards them and waiting for triangles to spin -> jump -> repeat" to be engaging game play, but most people really would prefer to die from a million paper-cuts than have to interact in any form with the old Exploration "mechanics".

But hey, I'm glad that you don't have to suffer from the new traumatic lighting effects since the existence of the FSS made you stop playing. Terrible stuff.

and yet nobody wants to take your joy from you. Just allow the honk to live alongside the engaging telescope play. Then everybody can be happy, why you got to take other peoples fun?

Did I say the "Honk God" was flawless and didn't need any kind of improvement?
Oh, you need to come back to it to just have something to say for defending the telescope minigame, of course.
Try to be more imaginative.

And.. where did I say I stopped playing ????
Pfff....

Seems like FD put in an awful lot of work, keybind requirements, hud-mode-hell and eye-candy-coding, to arrive at a result which is only marginally less boring, shallow and simplistic than the old placeholder system. I'm already pretty much over it and I only used it once.

If we're going to use this thing hundreds or even thousands of times for exploration, couldn't they have come up with something a little deeper, more interesting to use and - dare I say it - involving some actual entertaining game-play?

I dont think the FSS is a terrible thing, just incredibly underwhelming.

There I can agree with you. Even though the previous system was terrible, FSS is barely a few notches above it. Still needs a lot of work.
