Notice regarding key bindings

Notice how FSS (Full Spectrum Scanner) modes aren’t assigned to anything when you boot up Beyond. You’ll figure it out.

  • Notice that you have an “enter FSS mode” at the top of the FSS bindings menu.
  • Notice that there is no “exit FSS mode” bindings option adjacent to “enter FSS mode”.
  • Notice that there is a “leave FSS” hidden somewhere in the middle of the FSS bindings menu. Not an exit FSS mode. Not even a “leave FSS mode”. No, it’s a “leave FSS” bindings option.
  • Notice that you can assign the same key to enter and exit FSS mode, but the bindings menu would never think to suggest this. That would just be too logical and easy.

Notice that the Combat/analysis mode switch isn’t assigned to anything when you boot up Beyond. You’ll figure it out.

  • Notice that you can assign a given secondary key binding in analysis mode, but you can’t assign said key in combat mode. Because reasons?

Notice that the key bindings section is becoming so convoluted and unintuitive that FDs own programmers can’t make any logic out of it.

Notice that this game is full of idiosyncrasies such as these.

Notice that despite this games inherent beauty, it is beginning to collapse under the continued load of “adding stuff” without any thought to actual playability.

Notice that I as an original fanboy am disappointed with this “let’s get this barebones game out now to generate revenue for continued add-on/development for years to come” strategy without any attention to actually keeping the game fluent and playable.

FD finally after 4 years got around to adding the content that should have been there from day one, but it is practically inaccessible to all but the most die hard management fetishists, because of the non-sensical convoluted inconsistent mess that is key bindings.

I honestly can't recommend this game to newcomers, purely because of this mess.

Fortunately, that was one request in Beta that got included: the single key toggle for this feature. I guess there wasn't time to fix the game menu before it was released, but it's a welcome inclusion all the same.

Yes, it must be incredibly difficult for newcomers to pick up this game now because, as far as I am aware, there is no training video about the bindings. (If there is, I could do with watching it too !)

I guess it's only for people who had their custom keybinds prior to updating the game. I had to map all the new keybinds myself after the update, but default layout is fully mapped iirc, so for newcomers they'll be all mapped, I may be wrong though.

That "should have been there from day one" alone destroys everything you said about the game. That's just funny to read.

That's just some real laugh here. "Hidden somewhere in the middle", yeah, hidden, transparent or greyed out? Maybe both. Oh well, it's "leave", not "exit", so I couldn't understand what it's supposed to do. What a bad game with such a bad design decision, won't recommend it.

There are problems with managing those keybinds, yes, they're obvious. There are no proper categories for keybinds, they're all confusing AF, and what? Experienced people will get around it anyway. Newcomers will be overwhelmed by the amount of keybinds anyway, proper sorting will help navigating a bit but it won't change anything for both groups of players. It's a QoL issue, nothing critical at all, unless you have some problems with recognizing the purpose of keybinds or finding them "hidden in the middle".

You are. I tried resetting to default Hotas X settings. Some were mapped, but the ones I note (and bothered to try to find so far) are not.

I like how you take time to argue the wording instead of the content, and even find time to be condescending. You remind me of me 2 years ago.

I use my own mapping and agree. Having to figure out all of the new features without included content to explain what the hell was added made me finally delete the game off my hard drive. Trying to figure out how to bind what new systems to what, and what I would actually need to be using? No help. After grinding for months to get the Corvette, I took a break from the game and stopped following what was going on. Came back after a friend warned me to check the new content for changes and immediately found modules that no longer worked as they did prior, with no explanation. The whole thing is terribly convoluted and begs that keyboard support be FINALLY added to the console version instead of these inexperienced devs wanting to deny that they are aiming for a fully articulated sim experience, like War Thunder, but unlike War Thunder (Gaijin games - flight sim folks behind iL-2 and Birds of Steel on consoles, which all...) supporting keyboards just isn't a thing for them.

Guess the keyboards our pilots have at the ready on their left hands ain't for anything in particular, right?

So much could be resolved with a keyboard option. I've always got mine plugged in because I use the system's browser to surf the web while playing. (PS4)

And of course, a proper explanation of all the new features and an option to reset bindings. There are new bindings for elements I don't even know what they are for, such as new camera bindings/etc. So far i'm not seeing any, say, instant action missions that would appeal to players wanting instant, coop play instead of only instant PVP play. But sure, let's mess with bindings and UI elements that were suuuuch a priority. >_>

Newcomers don't have a problem becasue they can use the default config which is already configured.

I did the same thing with my X52 and the only binds that aren't configured aren't needed.

The problem with me is that I bind the new controls and then proceed to invariably forget them. Then I rebind them to somewhere more convenient and forget them once more. In truth, FD should realise a profit and sell a keyboard with the binds mapped. I have an X55, and I am always forgetting what's where. Voice attack? I have it and its a nuisance. Besides, there's no way I could remember all those verity commands. FD need to realise some of us are stoned.

If FD insists on adding more and more key bindings, it should at least insist on strict logical hierarchy for said bindings. We shouldn't be telling them this.

Maybe its time to allow us to automate whatever we want. I'll volunteer to code it. Unfortunately PC only.

Frontier are already in bed with Voice Attack - you can just buy the automation off the shelf.

I’m still here on the forums, but I’ve run myself into a dead end with keybindings and I’m out for the time being. OP has good points. I kinda want to be able to edit the keybinds file directly.

Like when I assign something it just says joy [number]

Is that the pedals? The flight stick?
The throttle quad? The hand controller?

Give me something to ID the controller as well as the axis, and I’ll stand a better chance of grouping them into workable sets.

You can! In Windows The bindings are listed in .binds files in the xml format in %localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Those files also list much more clearly which device is being used.

Yeah I did that once back in 3.2 but then I couldn’t get it to load the file because I miss-spelled something of deleted something it wanted.

When did games stop being about playing games, and more about navigating windows sub folders and editing text files? I'm getting too old for these sheets.

I dunno. Considering half the games I play in 2018 are either DOS games or games from ~98 or thereabouts, all of which suffer from a clear lack of compatibility with modern hardware and software and are from a time when players were still expected to read manuals and adapt to convoluted (although very stylish) UI and old school UX, I spend a good deal of my free time fiddling with patches, playing with dosbox config files, creating autohotkey scripts and generally speaking doing anything but playing games. I don't mind it, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask that.

Some people like to tune thier engines and watch the rev counter, whilst others just want to drive.
