What about being in combat mode? Does that prevent auto-tagging of the parent body/stars?
I'm reasonably sure I've seen the discovery pop-ups while in combat mode but I'd have to test it again to be certain.
For mostly RP type purposes (i.e., contextual gameplay), I'd like to have the option to not leave a trail everywhere I go.
I'm not able to play the game at the moment but is it still possible to disable the scanner in the Modules tab, or does it not even show up as a module now that it's part of the ship?
Even if this works it would be of limited utility in the bubble where you need the scanner active to detect signal sources and mission targets. But it might be a way of doing long sprints through unexplored space without leaving a trail of tags when you get back.
but don't just elide the fact that there was previously *no* practical way to find surface features. Now we have easy access to those sites, opening an entire new category of sightseeing and features to research.
Agreed. I hadn't seen a brain tree or geological feature until 3.3 beta. It just wasn't worth the trouble of hunting them down by eye or using someone else's coordinates.
If you don't honk you only get the primary star and those nearby (1kls?) - if you honk you get all stars in the system.
Ah, fair enough. I hadn't noticed that. I honk as a matter of routine and because the discovery notifications start to come in immediately I hadn't realised the later ones were tied to the honk.
I see what you're saying now: anyone who wants maximum credits/tags for the minimum effort will indeed "honk and go". Those who don't honk will still tag the galaxy, but not to the same degree.
I'm not unsympathetic to those players who are having a real problem accepting the new mechanics, even if some of the specific arguments are a bit straw-clutchy. There are things about the game that I absolutely detest and with which I'll never engage, and other things that would definitely bother me if removed.
But what it keeps coming down to for me is the thought that if exploration had
always been like this, few would have complained about it. I certainly doubt anyone would have requested the replacement or augmentation of the FSS with something as godlike as the ADS. What we have now is certainly closer to Frontier's description of what they wanted exploration to be, although it's still far short of that vision.
