Some more evidence to support Space Legs

Yes, but these are also the same people who believe Elite is their own personal space combat training simulation and when they win the whole game the space lizard will pick them up and take them away to be real star fighters. The rest of us give them a pretty wide berth.

Ha. I lol'd. I havn't seen that movie in years. Death blossom FTW.

Yeah yeah another space legs thread... however I feel there is more evidence to support the possibility of 2019 being a space legs year.

1. Frontier seemed to have listened when it came to mining, squadrons and missions. All features the community wanted improved. Therefore using this theory Space Legs must be something FDev is heavily considering as we ask for it so often, it's also a lot less work than atmos planets.

2. New structures and mega ships. All the structures and megaships just give me this feeling when I jump into an area that they are waiting to be boarded. Now I know we have scenario missions for some of them but in my home system there are a couple of structures you can see and scan. I just feel like they are waiting for me to dock n board them.

3. Type 9s abandoned in Signal Sources. I keep jumping into signal sources with Type 9s just floating there with cargo all over the place. A lot of these used to be wreckage and rubble but now they are just floating there intact. Again I feel like I could just fly close and board them.

4. No new SRV or ground vehicle since Horizons! Surely by now we'd expect another ground vehicle, maybe Fdev is working on character walking rather than these? They are currently the only method of leaving ship.

Obviously we have the Thargoid and Guardian structures from previous patches and Fdev added the commander creator a while back. We have lots of random generated ground bases on planets which could easily be docked at with an SRV.

I almost feel like Fdev might go for a holo projection of our commanders when we walk around ships.

Finally we've been told the next big part of Elite has gone into full production. Horizons was the first big change/update so with what space legs brings it's easy to argue it will be done over chapters.

That is just multiple cases of "it would be cool if I had spacelegs in this situation!", which isnt really evidence of any sort. :p

Wasn't it in one of the recent Youtube videos that someone said next year a game-defining content will be released?
I wonder if space legs be it. Or atmospheric planets being unlocked for landing.

But with the new mining mechanics I could see me in an EVA doing the abrasive mining, setting the charges whilst my collector limpets buzzed around picking up my goodies. There would be danger, you would have to get back to your ship and clear the area before the charges go off for example but I think that would add to the gameplay and not detract from it.

EVA mining sounds awesome. It'd be a solution to people complaining about hard-points and the new mining tools. Not that it'd stop people complaining though.

In other games I have played it feels more immersive being able to walk around my ship, talking to NPC crew and logging-off after going to sleep in a bunk (from a role playing perspective). There could also be a whole range of items we could add to our ship interiors (via in-game rewards or in-store) to personalise them if we had access to more than just the cockpit.

I would love it if the consoles in the ships were interactive, rather than just static images.

I'd rather use telepresence than suit up,especially in an extremely hazardous environment like an asteroid ring. So i would hope rather for 'WW landings' than legs, but i don't rate either as 'must have.'
Just my 2 creds

Very Good Points!

Yeah it would be super immersive, especially for HOTAS players.
"Hmm, I think I should run a bit faster..." [pushes throttle forward] :)

would love it if the consoles in the ships were interactive, rather than just static images.

It would be the "evil gankerz" who'd appreciate it the most if you'd need to get up and walk to some console mid-fight for the sake of immershun :)

Holograms kind of solves the problem of space ship being blown up and you being stranded on someone elses ship because the pilot/commander will always have to escape pod/re-spawn... eliminates that problem of being stranded entirely. In space you cannot send ships into orbit and if you do get attacked link can be cut.

You really think Frontier introduced Beyond season because "community" was asking for it? Dude, its not an indie game, ist an AAA title!

Have some trust in the development skills and many decades experience of Frontier. They gave us Beyond for to make better what already was in game and to prepare for next to come. I can assure you though "space legs" will never arrive to Elite Dangerous. Why would it? Oh wait..., I know! Coz "community" wants it! C'mon dude, grow up!:)

You seem to forget that Braben has said multiple times that he wants to see legs in this game. And Mamba's VERY detailed lower cockpit area which is impossible to see with ingame cameras (except htc vive "walking") are very good proofs that they have legs in atleast preproduction or (wishfully) full production.

They have hinted space legs multiple times in past years so we'll see if its Atmo landings or space legs next year.

If FD will do things in order- developing atmospheric landing will be first.

Would be interesting to see Brabens kickstarter vid might fire it up later I think you're right.

On my priority list the next DLC I wish to be released is Atmospheric Planets.

This. With the addition of lagrange clouds with lightning storms I wouldn't be surprised if we see gas giants having more interaction next year. Similar tech will be needed for gas planets. They also said they were shelving improvements to ice planet surfaces which was supposed to me in Beyond. I would guess the planet surface work looked too good to give for free. My bet would be they expand the types of planets we can land on with major improvements/additions to surfaces. They also just improved finding things on planets, it would be smart to now add more to find and interact with. Based on the newest frameworks currently in place I would bet on this. Probably wishfully thinking.

Space legs could be cool, but its literally an entirely different game once that is added, its a huge undertaking. Adding to planets would be easier at this point I think. Who knows :p

While I'm not particularly convinced by any of the evidence in the OP that Space Legs will be the next major expansion, there is some logic to suggest that it may be coming sooner than we think.

FDev will at some point need to produce an update to this game worthy of a full price purchase. There are only two possible features that I can think of that would make sense:
1) Atmospheric Landings
2) Space Legs

Given these two options, space legs would seem to be the most marketable or likely to draw the greater number of new players to the game. Atmospheric landings, while certainly having potential to draw new players, would (imo) be mostly aimed at current players (some of whom are still too tight to cough up for Horizons). Space legs would offer a much more diverse gameplay experience.

I'd be happy with either.

I don't think the level of difficulty in implementing either of these features can be used to determine whether one or the other would be more likely. There's too many unknowns. Would it be more difficult to implement lifeless atmospheric planets (where all they're pretty much adding is some colouration to the sky and some ship handling effects to simulate an atmosphere - maybe some rain too) than to create a whole new mode of gameplay for space legs? If atmospheric planets consisted of a prettier version of Horizons, would players be willing to cough up for a full price expansion?

Money talks - I think the only real considerations are what are FDev capable of (To my mind, a lot more than they're given credit for), and what will generate the most income?

.

No interest in Space legs in the best space ship flying ever made. My Opinion.

But on that point I would imagine that other games which have generated millions of sales(NMS,SC) for having certain items that would fit into the ED universe, coupled with the investment from tencent.

I think we will get something akin to those games but with Frontiers touch on it. I hope anyway.

/I know space legs were in the original starter pledge but I dont care for them, i want to fly spaceships....and ED is Champions League space ship flying compared to League of Ireland NMS and SC flight model.
