Chris Roberts took $7m from the $75m Microsoft gave him to make 3 games and used it for the Wing Commander movie which was running over budget, then he went back to Microsoft and asked them for more money.

Is any of this starting to sound familar?

Sometimes I feel like they don’t quite get the vision or the alignment. It’s not a product per se. It’s more like a community. We have this community that we’ve built and that we’ll grow. They love science fiction and they love the universe we’ve created. That’s what we’re building and growing.

Lulzbucketry!

So basically, us backers have been farmed out as ongoing DLC buyers that the new "investors" can attempt to monetize as a captive market, and in return Genuine Roberts gets enough cash to finish his movie :D

The 100 job ads they are running on their website were also running on various recruitment sites (and have been since March 2016) until this week.

The external ads have now all been taken down.

They aren't expanding, they are contracting. They are still hurting for a few senior dev roles but they've kept all those old ads up anyway. Most of them have been there for years.

There is one more piece of news to come out, it might come out on this upcoming Guard Frequency podcast but I tend to think it'll be Jan before it's out.
So the MVP is almost ready it seems. No need for more quality assurance, as we have paying subscribers for that.

And without further ado, here is Bootcha's latest Sunk Cost Galaxy video.

Enjoy

Very enjoyable video. I like how it focuses on Chris Roberts' pretend qualities as a "self-taught" film director without any formal education in the field.

Bwahahaha!

The mockers were right after all. It was always on the verge of collapse!

The best part is the bit the investors put money in could get screwed by the court case. I hope that goes well for them! I'm sure Crytek is thinking - "Oh Hey! There's some money we can go after now!"

I said they were 'contracting' but I think 'consolidating' is a more appropriate word. I think we'll see this early next year.

One thing we do not know is what milestones are attached to this funding. Have they got interim goals to meet? Now we have a fascinating new dimension to factor in and ponder when the tipping point will be for the backers. Surely there has to be a point when funding reduces.

Havent been able to read the full info onslaught yet but this is something I am also wondering. There is obviously so far zero info by CIG about what conditions the investors may have imposed for their investment. Specifically I wonder what type of returns and how they plan to get those returns.

One of the first options that comes to mind is that these 46MM are in essence a big fat glorified pay day loan, in other words CIG may have sold its future revenues (or a fraction of them) in a number of the next few years or so (could be both pre or post SQ42 release). Another option is that the investors are expecting the company to go full IPO at some point so they can sell their shares at a premium if the market values it higher than whatever they paid for in May.

Assuming the pledge money keeps coming in as stable as CIG suggests then this second option is much more risky as the product has no guarantee to be a success (especially given its current crappy status after 6-7 years) whereas jpg pledges seem a success story in and on themselves.

I haven't even played SC yet (Much looking forward to in the future!) but I must commend the team for sharing the company structure and financials as they are doing. No other company is this transparent and I really think CIG is becoming a model for what many other companies could become.

Keep up the amazing work, I hope to join in soon!

All out of the goodness of their heart... such feels

Hat's off to them sharing this info, months after it actually happened, after they had to file their UK financials which showed they had sold part of the company. Yeah, really got to give them credit for that /s

Interesting about the narrative about the sale as well. So, basically, before all this, not once did CIG talk about needing additional funds for marketing, and now boom, they need money for marketing. Despite it being clear, without this money, they are running out of money for development. Right....
