Modes I know I'm beating a dead horse, but we need official PvE servers

It boils down to the only people NOT having to compromise their builds are the murder-hobo's, hell they don't even fit viable FSD nowadays; feels a little one-sided.

Intercepting and destroying other ships is all they can do.

They cannot run cargo, smuggle, pirate, explore, mine, deploy SRVs or fight xenos.

When specialising, there is always a compromise.

The thing is, I don't consider what I do to be a compromise in any way. "Murder-hobos" are so rare when I play, that when I have nothing on the line, and enough time, I'm willing to play the "let's see how many times I can evade you and low wake, before you get bored" game. Record is seven until I got bored and messaged them, "You are aware I'm willing to do this all the way to the station, right?" There wasn't an eighth. :D

The way I build my ships make sense to me. Do I need a first class passenger cabin on my exploration ships? No, but I'm RPing a Commander who likes her luxuries, so she has one installed so she doesn't have to use the limited living quarters that come standard. But I want strong shields and engines in the black, just in case I come upon something unexpected.

The setting of Elite has always been a Cyberpunk one. We have corporations that have more power than most governments, slavery is common throughout the galaxy... though in the Federation they're called employees of a corporate state. Life is cheap, power is concentrated in the hands of a few, and a criminal cabal manipulates the fortunes of of an entire galaxy for their own fun and profit.

That cabal is the Pilot's Federation.

It's always amused me that in such a Cyberpunk setting, instead of playing the plucky anti-hero who can barely make a living who's stumbled upon the latest horrific plot concocted by a corrupt executive of the NGO that actually rules their city, we play as members of that NGO.

Bottom line is that this is a video game, and dysfunctional settings allow for interesting gameplay. Frontier allow for an amazing amount of player agency in this game. Through BGS manipulation, we can start wars, plagues (I think... we could under the old BGS at least), and famines for whatever reason we want to: in support of a faction, in opposition of a faction, for our own profit, or simply for our own amusement. We have the option of killing whoever we want to, with few consequences that are easily avoided.

Sure, Frontier could've made a Utopian setting where there's no slavery, no NGOs manipulating things overtly or covertly, no wars, disease, and famines, where everyone had access to life saving and preserving medicines like progenitor cells or the new nanomeds, peace between the Federation and the Empire, and all criminal activity easily thwarted or even prevented before it happens. But that would be a very boring game IMO.
I mean you're not wrong. I just feel like some of the supposed "rampant crime everywhere! OOOOOHHH nothing is saaaaaffeee" feeling is just way out of proportion sometimes imo. If that were true, how has humanity even advanced this far into interstellar travel, let alone was united enough to ward off possible exinction through alien invasion/war?

This.

Shields cost you only one slot and make sense in any build, while Armor, Thrusters, Power Distributors, and Power Plants are core slots, so the only thing they cost you is jump range... and if you're in a "hurry" while exploring, the time you lose due to jump range can be made up by Buckyballing it. All my ships are engineered to run cool, allowing me to start the jump while still scooping fuel without much fear of internal damage.

edit: And when I'm trading, I always Buckyball it. The time I save is worth a few hundred credits of heat damage, and is miniscule compared to the possibility of a rebuy.

Plus, when I'm out exploring, I leave my Imperial Courier at a small, low traffic system equipped for data running: fast and maneuverable, with as many shields, shield boosters, and shield banks as I can carry. That data is important, and I'm not about to lose it because I'm I can't be bothered to swap ships once I'm near the Bubble.
My Krait Phantom has no room left. It's all used up by anti corrosion cargo rage(size 4), all the scanning equipment that I can fit, including DSS, Recon limpet launcher and Research limpet launcher. Pretty much all my cargo is full of limpets, all my utilities are taken up by heat sinks and 2 of them are the xeno scanner and shut down field neutralizer. I bare had the room to put in a shield after everything was said and done. Point is, I was not fitting my ship for min-maxed one-trick-pony style jumping like how everybody else does She's for science and should be build properly for any and all possible experiments with those anomolies and such, who knows what answers lie out in the black?

Now i've done gone off-track enough.

Yes, thank you. This is what I was trying to get at. It's about that semi-roleplay aspect of gameplay yo.

When I build a trader ship, all I want it to do is haul cargo and survive. The cargo space I sacrifice for my shield generator is not a compromise to you, then?

It's not to me, my Cutter is 600T cargo, with guns and defences.

People who do the 720T with no defense or shields are crazy in my opinion.
(and I mainly play in PGs and still wouldn't go shieldless)

Heck, my T10 had shields and that thing was an armour tank.
But I figured for little bumps and the occasional belly flop on the pad, it's worth having shields.

Yes YOU have had to compromise your build for survivability, where your attacker are making no compromise because their intention is to kill and their build is perfectly optimised to do so .

My cargo cutter has full shields and defenses and hauls 720t of cargo

I'm sorry but what's your point here?

I believe his point is, "I would much rather risk losing six million in rebuys, plus eight million in cargo, due to an accident, rather than lose the 32,000 credits of profit per run I gain by running minimal shields."

Yesterday, while looking for a level place to land my ship, I boosted straight into a nearby canyon wall. (I'd forgotten to lower my landing gear). If Krait Caesar's Ghost hadn't had 5A shields, as opposed to the "recommended" 3D shields for an exploration build, my three week long exploration journey would've ended right then and there.

Well, I knew without engineering the default without shields was 7xx summit.

Perhaps 720 was it, I don't remember, because I don't run without shields + guns + SCBs + SLFs etc.....

:p

But thanks for the links folks, some great configs there.
Shame that 2 hours ago I took my Cutter apart and re made it for multi-crew mining..

I'm going to rip asteroids apart in style and with friends :)

If its an open build, I wouldnt bother with the SLF.

It'll all be over one way or the other by the time it gets 'on target'.

Yeah the SLF is a waste of space in my opinion and 2000mjs is enough to get the eff out if needed.

It seems to me that if survival against adversity is the goal, then one has compromised nothing by equipping a shield generator.

I can't have a 'pure trade' build but my oponent can have a 'pure killer' build ? Seems to be heavily one sided to me but I can see others don't see it that way so I'll leave you to jour self-congratulating gifs and meme's, I'd wish you happy Xmas but in reality I hope your baubles drop off.;)
