Void Opal Bonanza: Part of a plan?

Note: Having been around here long enough I know to preface things with a disclaimer.
In this case I don’t care if everyone has 10 billion credits and 38 ships there are 3 modes and it doesn’t effect my gameplay at all. Do what you want - it’s your game.

Now that is out of the way it’s “Tinfoil Hat Time.”
I do a lot of ED related reading at multiple websites and I have come to the conclusion that I, and a handful of explorers way out there, are the only ones not out mining Void Opals and making tens and hundreds of millions in credits. In one case over a billion. Someone quoted (IIRC) a FDev employee saying they have no plans to “fix” this. Assuming you consider it broken but, as I stated, I don’t care what money people have and I actually like ED.

So. Assuming this money making bonanza was (maybe?) intentional what did FDev have in mind here. A way to attract new players to a game that some think can be grindy?
Any other hot notions or theories?

Way to attract players, new and old.
Unintentional prices, but FD saw how happy players were and decided to roll with it.
Credit sinks incoming, so players will need money.

All kinds of theories. Let's just roll with it for now.

It got me and a lot attracted to mining but I think the void opals are now second valuable I’m finding the diamonds to be more valuable now m. The great opal rush looks to be over as I checked my sources and have found two stations that are buying diamonds for over 900k and the opals are now about 700-800k

I don't think this gold rush is going to be a permanent thing, with the void opals at any rate.

The sources are currently getting hammered and are drying up as we speak, no one knows yet how long they will take to re-spawn.

I think there are a lot of sources for them but players just seem to go to the obvious spots. Delkar and the like, i have been mining them a little further out, I'm not telling anyone where that is, as the other spots seemed to dry up pretty quick.

A gold rush is just that a rush till everything gone dry, its all very nice now though i think into the new year a month or two down the line they will be as rare as ever, possibly pushing up the price even higher.

There are systems where Void Opals are not the hot ticket item. Someone just happened to make a "wow, look at this!" video and they became the buzz word. I've seen Serendibite and Benitoite go for more. All the new minerals are making a killing, if you are mining them by cracking open and blasting. Which is great fun.

The easiest explanation for any of these situations is that FD needed people to use a new function that otherwise wouldn't get adequate player testing. For anyone who has been around since the beginning, we already know WE are the "QA"/testers for this game - that's simply how it is. FD has a long history of having "oopsie" exploits associated with new functions... that, or *epic grindfest* "bugs" around said functions, or the best - vague indications that using said functions will have "secret rewards" - which they don't - at least until some *later* release. A good example from this release is the FSS - it's going to get used anyway, but it sure helps when they did all of a) make it pay well, b) make it very grindy and repetitive in trying to find HGS's and c) drop "hints" that this new tool will have people finally finding those super duper uber secrets that have ALWAYS been there, but now it's EASY to find... yeah.

You're testing mining, that's all. I guess it's nice for some people, but we all know CR's were massively devalued long ago.

Guess I’ll have to read up on how to do it though I just finally got the FSS down pat.
I just watched the official FD training video, bought an AspX and threw on all the stuff they talked about. First run was a learning experience, but came away with 19million. My hull got beat up a bit from hitting chunks. The second time out was focused on finding those core asteroids and starting to populate the ignore list. Two hours of game play and you'll start dialing in on the mechanics. I'm sure there are some Elite : Spreadsheet players that will breakdown the minute details of every aspect. But at the end of the day, give it a go and see if you think it's fun. I'm having a "blast" (intended)

Tinfoil hattery engaged.

Frontier will be dropping a fat moneysink soon. Related to squadrons and fleet carriers no doubt.

Credits are easy come easy go.

It's the other rewards such as Influence, Reputation, Materials, Data, and alien items which actually have utility that actually carry the real value. Maybe FD is realising this.

Honestly, this is what the "Gold Rushes" promised by FD with the BGS should look like.

If only people who complained and got "Seeking Luxuries" nerfed way back in the early days of the game could see this now. Oh, they probably can.

As far as money sinks go, I'd be all for Squadrons being able to post CGs. No "global rewards" needed... all that happens is you pony-up some cash, and pick an activity to have it count against. For example, claim a bounty, and the squadron can sponsor a match up to credit-for-credit, to incentivise players going and getting bigger rewards than usual.

Of course, the reward here is influence for a supported faction, or generation of a favourable environment like the Void Opal rushes.

They seem to be everywhere - it'll take a while.

You have to do your homework better. I just sold 192t opals for almost 1.7 mil per ton.
More than 300.000.000 credits in the pocket.

Just wished Obsidian Ant provided the link to the post FD made, where FD stated that this is intended. Can't find it anywhere.

If it isn't intentional, then FD have created a monster. I really like the idea of long distance mining trips becoming a thing in the future - I imagine that the resources have been seeded fairly evenly across the galaxy. I might start early in fact. :D

Hello Commanders,

We wanted to address some concerns you may have regarding the high value of one of the new mining commodities, Void Opals.

Changes to the Background Simulation, which came with Beyond – Chapter Four, mean that there are now more elements that impact the value of a commodity than there were previously. In the instance at Viktorenko Holdings, these elements have lined up for a limited time in a way that allow the faction to be able to offer high prices on specific commodities.

To confirm, this does mean that, at this time, we are not planning to reduce the value of Void Opals.

In addition to this, the more motherlodes (containing Void Opals) that Commanders encounter and mine from (in a ring), the rarer they will become, driving an emergent and natural rush that will force intrepid miners into new horizons, seeking lucrative mining hotspots before they deplete. Ultimately, with the new mining changes, this is something we want to celebrate!

As we've mentioned previously, the Background Simulation is continually being monitored and we may still need to apply some further fine tuning to ensure that the Simulation is as interesting and dynamic as we intended when making these changes.

In the meantime, go for gold! Happy holidays!

There ya go

Isn't there an incoming invasion from the thargoids soon?

If this is true and not something I imagined reading somewhere the I dare say there will be a lot of ships going boom on the front lines which in turn is going to cost so maybe this is why the sudden flood of credits?

I think we're overthinking the FDev pudding with our usual 'theyre giving us more credits, something big and scary is coming' line of thinking that we do after every tweak to earnings/a credit exploit gets discovered.

I think the Idea of precious resources is intentional.
The only reason I can think of, that would make Fdev want to make sure all players had billions in credits (Legitimately).
Would be the Coming Soon™ Fleet Carriers.
If they price the carriers in the billion or billions mark, then without a non exploit cash source.
Some would feel that only exploiters could afford it. Which would have been mainly true.

I think this is just a way for Fdev to be able to counter that argument.

I do not think Fdev will have been brave enough with the replenish timer on the Core Roids.
My guess is 1 week, which to me is way too low.
