the FSS, watching paint dry....

That depends on what your definition of "is" is.

I've just never been fond of mini games. Even good ones. And the FSS is...not a good one.

Its overly fiddly. And controls are a pain. Bad from a UI perspective. It's far too low tech and slow for the universe it inhabits. Bad from a perspective of internal consistency. It turns pilots into pirate wet dream targets. Bad from the perspective of in universe functionality. No Trader would ever rely on this, as it could mean auto loss of interdiction. The FSS, as it's been implemented, makes no sense and is not fun.

I want to fly my ship to explore, not fiddle with finicky menus that look like something from a cut rate mobile game.

QFT.

While Darkfyre has proved it's possible to retain 'flying around' exploration, we shouldn't have to fight against the game in order to enjoy it (unless we want to).

I think the Honk should reveal all bodies, but not pay credits or put names on stuff. Then we can choose: FSS (smaller payout + discovery) or fly there and probe (larger payout + discovery).

Give us the choice, but dont pay/give credit for just honking.

That would be fine with me. We may disagree about the level of detail revealed and how it's presented - there are lots of options for that - but the I'll happily forgo credits and/or tags if I have the CHOICE.

You may not believe it but even the local map is enjoyable with a hotas, it just needs some time to find the right configuration for your liking or habits. That's even more true for the FSS configuration and I'd say, before we ask the devs for 'some love for this and that' we should put some love into it by ourselves to start with. ;)

That said, I'm fairly confident that some of the die-hard FSS hater would change their mind if they only could bother to put some love into their configuration. But as so often in life, hate blocks any useful efforts simply because hate is always telling you "it makes no sense anyway, so why bother".

I got the FSS working fine. I still wont use it, because it is BORING. I dont hate it, Obi One...its just boring.

There are many reasons why people don't like the FSS. Some could definitely be resolved by the players and some by relatively minor tweaks to the FSS functionality.

For me, unfortunately, it's fundamentally incompatible with the gameplay I enjoy.

Not sure if I qualify here given I don't hate the new system I just think its simplistic and boring.

I do find it quite adorable that you and others seem to spend an awful lot of time telling people they're wrong and that they just need to spend more time not liking it in the hope that something will click and they'll love it.

The updates been out two weeks or so now and people have had enough time to form opinions on it either way. So how come your view that its awesome is somehow more valid than others views that it's not?

Here you go:

Main point to me is - and I admit it's a highly subjective one - that you hand over all positions on a silver platter with the ADS which make all these bodies lose their ideally value in my book. They feel like 30 tons full of pearls to me, meaningless marbles nice for watching for once but with zero longevity. To me at least. Maybe you can understand now why I can't accept parts of the old besides the new functionality? I can't describe what an amazing fun it is (again: to me) to fill up the local map by my own actions. This would be totally undermined by the sheer existence of anything ADS-like.

There is no common ground to be found.

I don't think I've scanned a planet (in the FSS scanner screen) that had only life POIs yet. I have seen a high degree of variability on how long the POI count takes to resolve, sometimes it's near instant, sometimes it take a couple of seconds. I'm not convinced it's a canned wait time like the old DSS scanning was.

That’s one of the reasons for my “follow the gravity wells” search pattern. Volcanism = available energy = life.

It’s the combination of VR and HOTAS that’s irritating. I used HOTAS in 2D without any issues, but for some reason in VR, the system map starts zoomed in, and even when zoomed out fully, the cursor seems to move slower than in 2D. I think it’s because the system map is actually displayed in 3D, and some “compromises” were made to get it to work in VR.

As long as that function is an optional module, and not added back into the FSS, I have no issue with something like that. I just don’t want anything remotely similar to the ADS to reinfect exploration for me. The ADS killed any sense of discovery for me, since it essentially explored a system automatically by holding down a button for a few seconds. This made exploration a cold, sterile experience to me, which is a pity because I intended to spend much of my time exploring the galaxy on behalf of the Empire.

I prefer what I have now, using the information presented by the FSS to deduce the shape of a system’s gravity wells, then using that information to narrow my search to where there’s likely to be Interesting Things(tm). If system exploration returns to perusing automatically completed maps or looking at the nav menu, then that would be the death of exploration for me.

I think you are describing features of the galaxy here rather than how those features are discovered. There are similar trends with goldilocks zones etc too. The stellar forge is (imo) a work of genius, the way we interact with it is a different matter. I particularly enjoy the far side of the galaxy where the procedural rules are not interrupted by real artefacts, although it was those real stars & nebulae that motivated me to go exploring in the first place. As far as I'm concerned what we travel around in the game is the real galaxy ;)

Once you have the keys mapped and learnt how to use it, the new exploration system is easy to use, it is very fast to map out a large system, the slow bit is surveying the individual planets.
I personally think it is a good system. :D

Me also.

Looking for HGS's I flew out and looked back at the system with the FSS, I could see signals popping up every 30 seconds or so, as if the system was alive. A weapons fire here, a distress there, a encoded here, a HGS there. Mapped the planets for something else to do.

Twin joysticks have no problems mapping all the new keys and after 10 mins I was an expert at locking on and tuning in.

Well done Fdevs, dont listen to the salty posts on here, it's much better than the old system.

From a regular player.
Obyoz.
