What is the most terrifiying thing you can imagine while exploring?

What if one of those spiky things sauntered over to you, and injected nanites into your ship? A massive alarm goes off, and says that "SHIP BEING ALTERED! SWITCHING TO PROTECTED SYSTEMS!" And you run towards the bubble. You can see the tendrils of whatever it is coming closer to you over time. Now everyone in the bubble has one mission. Kill you.

Having to crawl through the vents of the ship to fix a problem and the chick from Event Horizon popping up in front of me with no eyes!!!!! Still can't rewatch that most excellent movie because of that scene. [knocked out]

'tis a good movie that.
I would also suggest Pandorum. Great portrayal of Space Madness... But anyway, back to the thread...

Honestly, nothing.

I don't scare easily.

However there have been a few games to give me the heebie-jeebies.
Silent Hill (when I was young) and more recently, Dead Space.

So I guess we'd need space legs in order to find anything truly creepy.

Utter boredom. That's the only dangerous thing out there.
Has caused me quite a few rebuys.. And in some extreme cases even save resets :p

edit: And in case anyone wonder. I'm more hooked on the game than ever, just not long range exploration.

falling asleep running out of fuel
falling asleep and crashing into a star.

Both entirely realistic things to be concerned with regarding exploration in Elite... But the most scary thing is actually enjoying it. To find out that I enjoy the repetitive loading screen and tedious nature of traveling in the game where 99% of your time is totally devoid of any gameplay content and the investment of time only compounds the penalty you are imposing on yourself if you ever decide to stop and doing something that takes advantage of any other aspect of the game.. That's scary. Because that means you're insane. And probably too far gone to realize it.

A guardian station that grabs your ship
in a gravimetric anomaly, taking control from
you making you listen to eon old limericks.

Or:

Raxxla interdicting you.

Ummm, you're not Albireo.

Finding out the dark side of the moon is beige Today.

Getting interdicted by an NPC when I have 4 days of exploration data and thinking I was safe because I have NO cargo hold and NO cargo!

You know, and I don't want to come across as judgemental here but if you think that enjoying what is a major part of this game makes one insane, then why, may I ask, are you even here? Surely, by your own definition, this makes you insane. Not that I'm anyone to say what's sane and what isn't of course, being out on the other side of the galaxy... Maybe I'm the insane one, or maybe I've reached endarkenment, who knows?
