Why would FDev be obliged to give away (although at the current price, they practically are) something that they've spent time and money developing just because someone can't be bothered to pay for it?

Because they're cheeky enough not to seperate the servers.

I'd love to see this forum the day they announce that! (I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong by the way).

Whilst I can understand why people want to bundle the game, there's still the point that this decision will have been made to maximise sales and profit. FDev are obviously of the opinion that they can make more money this way, as adding horizons and its extra cost will put people off who would want to have a punt on a cheaper base game.

Not saying that this would reflect reality, but it might be the reason for their decision.
