Frontier, what ever happened to...

I would like to play "ironman - open only - mode", I want to have it visible for all other players in open, this would give me a thrill!

For this I would buy a second account instantly without hesitating.

As above, Correct link is here.

Edit: FLIPPING JENNER!!!!!

Edit by Jenner: Flipping Right!

Interesting. Are we blaming Jenner now? ;)

I think Jenner's response might be something like

IronMan sounds great!

Althought the oldest Ironman commanders will all be inside of Mobius or Solo where its somewhat meaningless IMHO.

I thought it was understood that stuff Discussed in the DDF was basically spit-balling.

i.e. Here is what we're thinking of doing, what do you think? By the way, there are no guarantees that what we decide on can be implemented in the game. In fact, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, the only thing that was changed as far as the DDF was concerned, was that supercruise / frameshift was created instead jumping from point of interest to point of interest.

BTW, that was the right decision BTW. For all it's faults and sometimes, horrendous, travel times; I much prefer the super-cruise system to the alternative, if you want to see how that would have played out then have a look at Privateer II (Urgh!!)

That is correct. And topics like these are why game studios in general dont like to try any real discussions because every fart is taken as a promise.

I'm just curious if it is still being considered, I've not assumed it was a "promise".
But with the number of times I've seen it brought up in other chats, in other areas of the forums - I figured it would be a nice add to the game.

If only someone from Frontier would comment, but I figure you may have hit the nail on the head as to why they haven't.

That's odd, this post is the only one with the Rep button replaced with 'Report Post'.

Resident forum bad-boy, they're just letting him back in the wading pool for now.

Pretty sure there's a running bet behind the scenes as to how long it will take before he's back on the naughty list.

But he's one of those lovable rogues.

Ironman Mode has always been hilarious to me. What's stopping you from hitting the Reset Account button when you die?

Need help pulling that trigger, "Iron Man"? [squeeeee]

I think it would be much more effective if there was an exlusive Decal available to all Pilots who have never died. Die once, lose access to it. Real Iron Men can show off their prestige, the "Iron Men" who can't muster up the guts to hit the Reset Account button lose the prestige.

Problem solved with 10 minutes of PS work, a few minutes of Code and no new Account Modes. [up]

Better yet, add an indicator next to someone's Rank when scanned that they haven't yet died as well. "Deadly +". Would make Iron Men quite the hot target. If someone made it to higher Ranks and retained their Iron Man status/decal, that would be some real prestige.

That's lame, would feel like halfway suicide to me. A true worrier wants to die by his enemies hand! :D
I also would consider a second account for a true ironman mode that only allows ironman but would prefer a different server without engineers and open only which would lead to a better balance. That would be awesome. Really like to hear some official word from the devs.

Why do you need the game to force Account Reset? That's the part of "Iron Man" I don't understand. Sounds more like Barium Man to me.

Agreed that identifying Iron Man players so readily would be a bit harsh. I think a nice decal would be entirely sufficient.

FD would never launch an Iron Man only server. That is a pipe dream if there ever was one.

Iron man mode = yes sounds good.
Something in game to ID ironman = nope stupid idea.
Getting a paintjob or decals upon your death for surviving 1000 hours in iron man = yes
Escape pods manually activated = yes
Escape pods damageable/ destructable = yes
Escape pods scoopable = yes
Iron man open mode only = yes

Escape pods need to be in game iron man or no , imagine you manually eject are you in suspended animation? Or awake looking out a window of a coffin in space? What happens if you get scooped up by your attacker? And surely you need to get out of your seat and run for the escape pod?

So space legs is probably what is holding up these additions to the game.

I would really like to see the Iron man mode in Elite.

All it would need to be is a Very large Private group with its own start and rebuy rules.
Start would be Normal game start (sidewinder and 1000 credits) no other assets.
Rebuy would be Re-start.
Only players in group would be Ironman also.
Fdev could then let PC players have multiple commander logins as default like they do with consoles.

You seem to not understand the concept of an Ironman MODE. It means all commanders in that mode are playing Ironman and abide by the mode rules.

For example, if I manage, in Ironman, to assassinate that notorious PvPer who's been killing people left and right, I know for a fact that all his assets, all his Corvettes and his Cutters and his mods and his billions are instantly deleted from the mode. I know that he won't be able to come back at me right away, unless he does it in his starter Sidewinder. But I also know that his vengeance will be brutal when he builds himself back again.

It's a whole new way of playing multiplayer.

We can all pretend to play Ironman in the current implementation of Open but ultimately it's meaningless.

To the OP: what happened with Ironman is that FDEV does not care about what was promised 4 years ago. In all those years on this forum I must have seen tens of threads about Ironman. Heck, I even started a couple myself. Yet I haven't seen a single reply from FDEV. Nada. Zit! Not even a "haha, you're still waiting for that, you silly plebs! It will never happen buy our MTX." At least it would have put my mind at ease.

Anybody ever play diablo 2? Losing a hc character in that felt like being punched in the heart the first few times :)

I dont expect its going to happen but HC in this i think would be really good. With some rebalancing towards ship defense (from other players)

It certainly came to be understood that way. But before version 1.0 was dropped into the Memory Hole, back when it was "Design stuff" rather than "stuff Discussed", it was understood to be significantly more.

The Death Penalty / Ironman proposal as quoted I would argue falls firmly into the pre-Ministry Of Truth timescale, as it was posted just six weeks after David's KS FAQ explaining the god-like powers that the DDF would bestow upon its members post-release. Of course that, too, eventually came to be understood as spit-balling.

A forced "ironman mode" would probably cause tons of players to think twice about playing in Open. I know I would.

it would never have been forced but an optional mode, which, if you died you would have the option of respawning in the normal non iron man mode or starting again. as to it being the same as wiping save every time you die... it really isnt.

1) it would be a level playing field, ironman only really works if everyone is playing it, otherwise the current "griefer types" (maybe griefer is not the correct term but i am not sure what is.... role play serial killers perhaps?) but they would have a field day if they knew they could blow up ironman players with no repercussions.

2) and this is the biggest thing for me at least (becuase i would be ironmaning in PG even if i could, not in open) there would be a manually fired escape capsule as an optional piece of gear which would presumably take up a slot. When your ship blows up there is a 2 or 3 second window where your computer suggests you eject. I would imagine at this point the ironman player if they hit eject in time would get to potentially survive to live another day..

As for the DDF being pie in the sky spitballing and not a promise................. There is a bit of dishonesty there imo. The DDF was not a promise, but it was more than just wishful thinking as well.... remember the name was only changed to Design Discussion Forum later on. in the kickstarter it was Design Decision and that means something different. So sure... not a promise, but each core feature was eventually signed off by a dev and was meant to be the standard which was to be aimed for.

I would say the DDF is not a list of broken promises, but it absolutely shows how wide of the mark FD were with what they considered "the game they wanted to play!" compared to the game they are able to make. It is a list imo of missed targets.

Have you read the OP? This thread was certainly not started to debate the sense (or non-sense) of ironman mode. Let's assume for a moment you are genuinely interested and not just trolling, here's a brief attempt to explain. Keep in mind that even under ironman players there's no such thing like unity and everyone might have a slightly different approach.

There's something that all good games have in common but has been forgotten in the course of time, mainly thanks to the majority of modern MMOs that mainly focus on shallow, short living entertainment rather than on good gameplay. Most of the younger players have no clue anymore what that means (and never learned it) and here we are and trying to explain the obvious.

The keywords are meaning, skill and a strong sense of achievement, instead of the more and more common busywork. To me it basically means to step away from the arbitrariness of the game. Look at what we have now: If you see someone in a Conda it's hard to say whether it actually was the result of skill or just perseverance. Let's face it, in most cases it's the latter, cause you can easily grind whatever you want without any real danger of a loss. It's just a matter of time.

All personal development is always upward, never down. That's so common in these days that most people won't even question this aspect anymore. 'Death' in the game is more or less meaningless and of symbolic nature at best, while seemingly high insurance costs for the high end ships are usually no problem for their owners anymore. Ironman mode keeps you on your toes as you tend to play way more attentive, cause dying really hurts in this mode.

The only way to currently play ironman is the self induced variant which simply doesn't cut it for me. That's just another form of arbitrariness and optionality, something that in itself is in contradiction to the spirit of a true ironman mode.

This must do for now, in no way did I mean to start a discussion about ironman mode in general. Please respect this as that was surely not intended by the OP.

So basically you're asking to be forced to play a certain way?

With everyone else that's playing the same way?

So everyone has to abide by the same set of rules?

What a crazy concept!

it was meant to be an optional mode... no forcing, and if you got blown up you would have the option of migrating to the other modes..... just not carrying on in iron man (because what seemed like a good idea on character creation may not be so palatable 1000hrs and 2 years in!.

actually i think all the talk of modes (which i use as well) is not helpful...... it really is just a series of matchmaking rules, there are not modes.

ironman would just be an extra flag to add onto the matchmaking

Interesting.

I didnt say anything about that :)

They said the way ironman mode is now is unacceptable to them. Not everyone plays that way. Nothing is really at a loss or gain from it because no one else is really living on the edge.

I mean just because its comparable to the faults of the BGS and Powerplay doesnt mean I was talking about any of that stuff.

Matchmaking rules, I like that though. Lets change how that works. Not the modes, the modes can stay. I like them as well.

I dont wanna get off topic with that.

Ironman seems pretty neat. I'd hope they change the times it takes to get things done in that mode. Like engineers and stuff. Fast track it a little bit, and set a starting protection or random seeding so we all dont spawn in one place.
