PvP What makes a ship good at PvP?

I tried a Krait, Chieftain and FdL in HazRES and conflict zones and I consistently did worse with the FdL during PvE. They all had similar builds and similar weapon loadouts, and at the time weren’t engineered. I figured I’d dominate with the FdL, but that wasn’t the case. What makes a ship good at PvP?

Do you know how to post your coriolis link? What's your level of engineering? Edit - I missed where you say no engineering. TBH, that's the start of a good PvP ship (piloting skill notwithstanding). The FDL is considered the meta PvP ship for a reason.

Well first of all, NPCs don't fly like players do. Good pvpers will be keeping their speed up and will never come to a stop so having a ship with a good pitch rate like the FDL, FAS and Chieftain makes it much easier to stay on your target.

Second, you can't just build each ship the same and expect the FDL to be better than the Krait. The FDL can be absolutely amazing but has to be built a specific couple of ways the get the most out of it.

PvP is really a game of paper-scissors-rock-lizard-Spok.

Pve is more like generall attrition based on the zone characteristics.
In either case engineering will improve your experience and success/survival.

Start with basics like distributer , thrusters shield and hull. The difference it makes is phenomenal compared to vanilla.
The other thing to consider is your flight style preference.
The fdl flies very differently than many other ships, not everyone does well in it.

Can you explain flight style? People have asked me what my flight style is and all I can say is “I dunno, keep them off my 6 and kill ‘em before they kill me”.

The question is about what type of combat maneuvers, both offensive and defensive you typically use.
This can be quite important in your ship selection as the handling characteristics of the various ships may either compliment your "style" or conversely inhibit or hamper you.

As example if you are a jouster then ships with high agility , or better put, the ability to swap ends quickly is critical. It's like barrell racing.
If you kite for avoidance then boost cycle gains more importance.
If you like to dogfight lateral thrusters are of major importance, whereas tanking and alpha dps style conflict is not so dependant in this regard.
Each ship is a balance of speed, agility, offensive/defensive capability and flight utility.

In my dps builds I want to stay close and deliver as much damage in a short space of time as I can.
In jousting builds I can stand further off and only really get close for gun passes.

This is a simplified explanation but I think relates the point.
