It's time for a steamcharts thread!

Remember for the people who worship the dumb Steamcharts we are only seeing 1/4 the picture. We have players like me Who who don't use Steam to play Elite Dangerous. We also have PS4 and Xbox So that 4 different ways to play Elite Dangerous.

Its worse than that. The game was £5. If you want to win the argument badly enough then spend £5 as many times as makes you happy and then log in with them for a bit. People do it, im not pointing any fingers but it does happen. ;)

Conspiracy confirmed. People buying copies of ED to artificially make ED look like its doing better then ever before.

Meanwhile I'll use the new features in my friends list in game to see when folks have last played Elite since of my 5 pages of friends, I saw only one or two on prior to the update and that's now up to maybe 3-4 at peak. Back in the old days, I'd typically see 10-15 or more on when I played.

Scrolls thru list--ok, maybe 10-15 have played in the past week. Another 10-20 have played in the past year. The rest: 2+ years ago. That's not a picture of health to me, imo.

Yes, but someone who isn't interested in the game wouldn't even buy it for €5. Someone who is only slightly interested might buy it for €15 while someone who is slightly more interested might buy it for €25. I'd guess that interest and price level each other out. Meaning that the amount of people who buy it would be roughly the same for each sale, simply because there are less and less people interested who didn't already buy it. A huge amount of recent sales are probably also 2nd and 3rd accounts. So why should the number of new players suddenly be drastically different from the other sales?
I guess what I’m suggesting is “$15 for the full game” might be a tipping point in a way that none of the other sales have been.

The only reason I care about the Steam numbers is that I want to continue playing this game and need Frontier to continue developing and supporting the game. I don't need the Steam information to address this concern, but the numbers show a trend, which is comforting.

With updates and paid content, there will be more players and more micro-transactions. I can only speculate about how many all-black Mambas are flying around and how much cash FD generated over the holidays, but apparently enough people play and buy bobble heads to make updates worthwhile.

I'm not ready to start worrying.

Yes, but a tipping point for who? There are others with more interest in the game where the tipping point might've been €20. And before that €25. And so on... Why should we assume that the amount of people who don't care about Elite but buy it for €15 would be higher than the amount of people who do care about it and buy it for €20?

Well rumor is that 3/4 of the player base is going to quit the game unless the ADS is brought back, so

Hide your daughters, hide your wives.
Hide your steamcharts and stay inside,
Here comes FSS.

So does idling in the main menu count for active users in the steam charts?
I did that most of all day, yesterday.

If I had the time, I'd find all the "high numbers after an update mean nothing" quotes on the No Man's Sky thread and post them here, not because I'm anti-ED, but rather because anyone who uses one standard for their beloved game and another for their "I don't like it game" should be the ones eating their sock.

That's not directed at you, OP, just a general observation.

BTW, the only numbers that matter to me are PS4 numbers ;)

Yeah, its interesting how Steam numbers only matter when they go up. But when they're down - like, for 3 years on end - its completely irrelevant.

FDev thanks you for increasing their playerbase by 1 throughout the day, for both Steam and overall stats.

Leaving the launcher open counts as playing on steam at last check. My steam hours are exponentially greater than my actual in game time.

Did I come to the wrong place?

No sorry I need to go write an open letter.....

Dear Fdev,

Being unable to view a scale model of my house in the sol system is game breaking, when will you answer the players calls?
