If I wanted a 'radio-tuning' game I would have rather bought an old radio.

Making exploration an out-of-cockpit dial and zoom mini-game is a huge immersion break for me as well. Elite: Dangerous has always been about the first person cockpit for me, be it ship or SRV.

Another nail in the coffin for me.

Galaxy map and system map behave the same way. One reason behind it is to keep things manageable/readable in VR.

Indeed. I guess you could argue that navigating the galaxy map and system map is the same sort of mini game. My personal response would be that I prefer first person cockpit gameplay.

Though the galaxy map is hardly 2D, but the system and explo mini games are. Horses for courses I guess. Some like it. I acknowledge that it works, I just don't like it. :)

Huh? The system map is very much not 2D?

The System map nor the FSS are 2D, unless you call the view out of your cockpit 2D as the FSS uses exactly the same assets. If you are slowing down when entering the FSS you can see the star infront of you as you slow down. I am pretty sure that star is not a 2D sprite.

I stand corrected. Not a feature I use/d. But what's the point? What "gameplay" does that feature add? Haven't been playing much since the update.

Well, none. :D It is a graphical representation of a system. The value in it being 3D instead of 2D is the sense of scale. I am fairly immune to 'VR impressiveness', but the larger stars are almost scary on the system map. If it were 2D, it would just be a larger circle. In 3D you get the sense of awe that is at heart what drives space exploration for me.

Fair enough. You enjoy the new gameplay mechanic I conclude. :)

Well, it depends on the parts you are discussing. But the FSS being out of cockpit is a massive plus for me, just my opinion of course. Since I upped the star count and background resolution, the FSS in VR is a rather 'shocking' experience, really. Not when zoomed in, but when you zoom back out and you're just floating among the staggering number of stars. If this screenshot would mostly be the floor of my Viper that wouldn't have nearly been as impressive. Its almost like you're EVA'ing.

I see it as a VR surround that is why it's full screen and would look even better in VR itself. I still see myself as sitting in the cockpit, I just can't see my body and ship because of the VR overlay.

I still don't understand the whackamole comparisons, it's nothing like whackamole.

Maybe the way we currently invoke the FSS is another placeholder and when we get space legs we will need to get out of our cockpit seat and move to the astrophysics station to scan the system.

I think that will be great but it will of course annoy the insta-information crowd here as it will add another 60 seconds per system. :p

Uh, what it is is effectively a hud onto your visor that replaces your first person view, I suppose if you wanted to not have it 'shift' they could do something to make it look more like an overlay, but saying "out of cockpit" breaks immersion is a bit much in my book, first person is first person, it is the future, if your whole line of sight is replaced with that hud, which easily could be done with what has been seen ingame, why would it break your immersion?

Joking aside, it is clear how wants FD exploration to be: time spend surveying a system, finding stuff, spending time in SC to get to interesting stuff, then proceed from there. The focus should be on adding more interesting stuff, atmo planets and gameplay that goes with it. The whole 'I used to be able to survey 75 systems per hour' is just going to be a relic of the past. Multi-layered extended time spend in a single system is the future. And that will become easier to visualize when atmo planets land. :)

Yeah it could be neat if the added a screen the maybe comes from the back of the chair and goes over the CMDRs head. The could do it for FSS, gal map, and system map.

Odd I never saw people bringing this issue up with the galaxy or system map before though...

I think this is a good post, the FSS and the rest of the Beyond changes appear to be a solid basis to then build the other *stuff* we all want to see.

That only works if players are able to survey/filter a lot of systems per hour to find those worth spending a long time to explore. The galaxy is huge after all and there are not so surprisingly a lot of very uninteresting systems in the galaxy.

To make discoveries special they need to be rare. I don't think a lot of players get exited when they find a icy planet.

System map, galaxy map, FSS, external camera and multi crew gunner are all ‘out of chair’ situations.
It would not hurt If FD added a small animation or effect to show that a visor is deployed.
Similar to what happens, when lifesupport is activated.
