If I wanted a 'radio-tuning' game I would have rather bought an old radio.

Wait are you suggesting that those 10,000 Commanders who have signed up to DW2 haven't done any exploring with the new system and therefore have no idea what to expect? Are you really saying that?

Yep. Im guessing they gave it a go, found some signal sources, went yay, and decided to save it all for dw2.

Its really impossible to use the fss for extended periods without feedback. Its just not possible...

What a load of self-serving biowaste, you might find it tedious or evidently IMPOSSIBLE, but you seem to be in the minority. Go take a look at the Exploration Sub-forum and then report back on the flood of posts there complaining about the new system. You know the sub-forum in question, it is the one where anyone interested in exploration go to talk about exploration.

On a personal note, I've spent the last few days traveling/exploring, and using the fss a lot.
I will be parting on DW2 tomorrow, but honestly, I do not see myself being able to explore full time.
The FSS is good for generating cash, quickly.
It's a non-fun mechanic, and I will not be able to do the full trip.
It's not exploration content, it's a tool that replaced another tool.
They are both terrible tools, but for different reasons.
Exploration was my main thing in game.

Just replacing that text for a moment...

The Elite Reddit has 146k members, with a daily traffic of ~40k people.

These official forums have 105k members, including those who joined because of Jurassic World Evolution, but I don't know the traffic stats.

Both are by far the largest and most-active feedback portals for Elite Dangerous.

A year ago it was announced that 3.25 million copies of Elite Dangerous and Horizons combined had been sold.

Even if there was no crossover between forum and Reddit users (which isn't true), and a year ago every owner of Elite Dangerous had Horizons (also not true), only 251k of of 1,625k players (15%) have even chosen to register their interest in reading/providing feedback on the largest/most-active Elite Dangerous portals (these forums and Elite Reddit).

Reddit stats show that single-digit percentages of Redditors regularly post/comment, and it is similar here: 76k members have 10 posts or fewer (72%), 64k members have 5 or fewer (61%), and ~28k have 1 post or none (26%).

Simply put: the VAST majority of gamers don't bother saying on the internet whether they like or dislike something. They simply carry on doing whatever they were doing, or move on to something else. They will use ANY FEATURE for extended periods and not give feedback - they don't care.

While all constructive feedback is useful to FDev, let's not overstate the relevance of a few dozen people saying "XYZ feature is bad". FDev will read public constructive feedback and look at usage statistics of features/content, and make decisions based on the whole picture.

Whilst i applaud the addition of the FSS i don't like having to play "Bop it" to navigate my way around the galaxy.
Something akin to the old system with the ability to use the FSS to gather detailed information would be preferable.

10000 people signed up to distant worlds 2? Wow. I still would like to speculate that's when the real feedback will start. You're talking about the mainstream gamer crowd...

Lately i've been employing the fss as part of daily play and wow it doesn't get better.

Expect the word 'repetitive' to come back.

Also, the condition of being blind and forced into this mode for a few months on end.. well, see how that goes to anyone but a white knight (who will hate it too but just wont say it).

It's a bit disingenuous to use DW2 as a metric to anything other than the amount of people interested in taking part in DW2. If 10,000 leave tomorrow and 10,000 return, that in no way implies anything other than they went and came back. You could imply such things as they had a great time, they were committed etc etc, but not in any way that FSS is a success or indeed a failure.

I'd go as far as to say, for as long as I'm on DW2, the furthest thing from my mind will be the FSS. I simply won't use it, I don't like it, I think it's a cheap piece of b-movie esque manure. But others love it, we're stuck with it.

Maybe it's time to kill this thread. The horse is dead, the topic is dead, and my will to keep reading it, is dead :)

I'm currently 15,000 light years from Sol. I've already travelled at least that since the system went live. I've pinged every system I've visited and anything interesting I've fully scanned, including probing planets of note.

I'm not bored, not even close.

FSS very bad.

Do you like anything else in the game? I had actually shelved ED before 3.3 dropped, due to frustration with the bugs and some "design choices". As you know, I found the FSS captivating, and it brought me back playing almost non-stop since 3.3 went live. Now whether it's with the FSS or the previous ADS, I can only explore for so long at a time (DW2 would kill my soul), and I'm starting to reach my "I've had enough exploration for a while" quote. So I've tried some of the other things in the game.

Unfortunately, the rest of the game is depressing me. Mining depresses me. Combat depresses me. The terrible bugs on PS4 depress me. The "cool the first time, repetitive by the third time" scenarios are starting to depress me (due to the aforementioned repetition). Dear Lord above, I'm turning into you, LOL!

Point being, I love the FSS, and yet I'm not sure it's enough to save the game, for me anyway. My eye is already starting to drift back to other games, and I wonder how long it will be before ED is back on the shelf. Looks like we are in the same canoe, even if we are paddling in opposite directions, LOL.

Absolutely. That post also shows how it all ties together: the FSS, probes, the new lightning, new stuff to find: it all connects into an awesome explo experience. Still hanging around in Colonia, ships are being transferred and then I'll be doing a series of smaller expeditions around these parts in small ships, waiting to see where DWE2 goes. :)

I'd be happy to agree with that, including that "it all connects into an awesome explo experience" except for the FSS mechanic itself, which completely ruins the whole experience for me. And this is further feedback to let FDev know.

I'm on record to say that the results of the FSS are great - the POIs, the USSs, the remote discovery results, etc. Well done FDev on all of that!

But the hunt-the-blue-blob UX is atrocious, and I don't particularly feel like pulling punches to soften my words.

How is a 1950's underpowered servo-motor driven "telescope" in any way believable? The ultra slow pan and line up the circles mini-game has been designed by FDev to create busywork. They believe explorers need to use fine motor skills. Surely exploring should be treated as a more intellectual pursuit, rather than tedious hand-eye coordination.

A spreadsheet with clickable links for every blue blob would have been better. At least we could have accessed the data faster.

So FDev, my feedback is that just about everything about the latest update was great, except for the unnecessarily slow blue blob mini-game. Assuming the FSS view won't change, some of my suggestions are:

1. Blue blob display should be persistent (of course),
2. Allow configurable pan speed, eg. up to 120 degrees per second,
3. Allow instant switching between hemispheres or octants (since there has to be at least two "telescopes" on any ship anyway),
4. Allow point-and-click just like many other places in the game,
5. (my preferred) Use the orrery view instead, with blue blobs on the orrery clickable (been suggested many times by myself and others).

Too polite, too timid, dont know how? How do console users access the internet anyway? I dont know.

The FSS is a stinker of poor design. A large number of people react negativly before they even get to grips with it which suggests they didnt listen to any feedback or just didnt care. Because its bad and boring people will gravitate away from it, even if they dont complain. Im so certain of this to say it in these terms. Cause the FSS is basicly really really boring. Its a chore.
