I hope DW2 gets ganked all the way to Beagle Point.

All this thread proves is that we need an "open pve" where pew pew is disabled, be it perfect or not there will always be ways to troll, and that groups need more tools to mod/enforce the rulesets of their group or server, if you will.

I don't think that's the take home message here. I think certainly some improvements could be made to the game (making basic hull armour survivable and having stat buffing modules make up a much smaller portion of the total pool for example) but really the take home message is that it's much harder to defend the defenseless than it is to attack them.

It's going to happen, may as well include in your play it rather than trying to exclude it.

"I personally applaud FDev (for once) for restoring ships and data in the event of PKing during DW2. This is supposed to be a peaceful cooperative event, and all possible precautions have been taken, and they’re not going to put up with any from ne’er-do-wells this time. "

I understand and sympathize with all who feel this way. However, this is not a peaceful world nor galaxy. Douchy people will always be douchy people. If you dont want the danger of the world dont play in it, or don't min max your ship. Make your own PG invite your own people. I for one will continue to accept the risk and reward of playing in open.

I havent been with this community or game for long but i read all the time about people and their immersion. Pvp is part of it. Dont cry when if you get ganked ... Please. Youre just giving the douches the attention they arent getting from somewhere else. Thats all they want.

I’m way out in the black in my heavily armed/shielded Viper MkIV looking for rare discoveries and important first scans.

If I come across any other commanders, I’ll quite happily give them an escort for a while but only in exchange for any rare materials I may need.

If I don’t get these rare materials or if we can’t strike up some sort of a deal, I’ll probably shoot at you.

Extortion? Piracy? Of course! That’s how I want to play the game!

As many others have stated - don't see any issue with FDev helping to administrate a private group's rules. Particularly one as large as DW2.

Flying 5k, 20k...60k LY just to poop on someone's parade is some mean spirited petty nonsense in my book and there's no comparable behaviour I can think of - since it's like like spending months at sea, finding an unarmed vessel with no value at all and sinking it for no other reason than the lulz.

It's too bad explosion animations don't stick around longer, kind of makes it hard to take selfies in front of them.

My usual response to that would be suggesting to wing up and designate a camera ship. However, I'm afraid once the blood is in the water, the cameraperson would forget their role and join the fray, even if it's in an unshielded Hauler.

Why should the size of the group matter? And if it does then where does one draw the line? 5000? 10,000?, 15,000? The DW2 group isn't even large compared to many. Do all the bigger ones deserve the same treatment or not?
I won't argue the rest of your comment about mean spirited petty nonsense as I agree with you completely.

It's true though. People with big garish graphics in their sigs are usually pretty unbearable.

Gosh, darn it. How can a person hope to come back against wit like that. i kinda like looking at all those pretty badges, don't stop explorers. all the space angels love you, they're singing you to Beagle Point. vindelanos, please, give us another of those barnstorming Shakespearean speeches now, I'm sitting comfortably and it's what you do best. Maybe even a video of you ripping teddy bears apart or something? That'd be cool. And you rock btw... clearly, so go club those seals fella, teach the universe a lesson!

One should note that within the actual expedition, this whole ganker threat is mostly a complete non-issue. People asking about gankers in open are simply advised to stay in private groups (there's not just Fleetcomm, but several others) or solo and everyone is mostly happy with that.

Kill statistics for certain systems in open aren't really an issue, as everyone flying in open knows the risk by now.

I guess it doesn't...but it was early and I hadn't had my coffee yet. DW2 is a large event with both an influx of new/newish (and/or new to exploration) players joining in, and external eyes on it - so having that experienced ruined by gank behaviour would suck. I think that's what I was trying to convey.

I remember the time when NPC ships attacked us from 1k l.y. distance from bubble if we had significant amount of exploration data onboard. Since them all my exploration ships are equipped with A-rated thrusters, distributors for at least one boost and chaff. Don’t know why, but FD removed these NPC’s and here we are – players are asking for safety Disneyland with pink clouds and silver unicorns. I watched few minutes of Hari’s stream. I’m sorry guys, but he was in full gimbal corvette. If anyone of you was with chaff and able to boost once, 99% of his victims would survive, having in mind that IMO FD has intentionally deployed the bug to not be mass locked by another player.

I agree, I now think an Open-PvE mode is the only way forward after what we've read of the start of DW2. I used to be against this because disabling damage seems artificial and I preferred C&P and meaningful system security, but I now see that that's futile. If FD are watching this I hope that they'll take away the same lesson.

It could be done without much development effort. All damage is already tagged by source so that bounties, C&P, mission counts and "You were killed by..." messages can work. All that would be needed would be a final check that damage is from an allowed source before applying it.

It was a good try. Other games have also tried to avoid simple flagging, but finally been driven to having a PvE mode. In every case its been a successful and popular change. I hope FD are working on it (but I wouldn't expect them to say yet if they were).
