If I wanted a 'radio-tuning' game I would have rather bought an old radio.

Quick question (in a effort to extract something vaguely productive from the thread)... why are you feeling forced to use a hat switch? Not a HOTAS user myself, but have done a fair bit with the bindings and providing guidance on setting them up, and haven’t seen anything which would indicate being forced to use the hat switch for movement.

FSS tracking is up-down, left-right.
Flight is pitch, yaw, roll and strafe up-down, strafe left-right.
Two axes of motion ratger than five. This is why it feels 'out-of-cockpit' and minigame-y.

You're not forced to use a hat switch, but you don't need to use anything more complex to control the FSS.

I would say at least a few are. And that feedback is two-pronged as well. There's just as much positive feedback in favor of the current system as there is negative feedback against it. Some is supported better than others on both sides.

Of course there's positive feedback, FD have worked hard and come up with mechanics that for sure make exploration much more accessible. They've provided active game-play where there was only passive, they have removed the need for long SC trips just to scan a body, and since they seem to worry about it as much as some players, they have made it easy to earn a lot of credits from exploration.

We do get it, honestly. :) We're also not asking or suggesting that it be changed, nerfed or removed.

I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I Am.

The problem with analogies is that they sometimes miss the point.

There are alternatives to green eggs and ham if you don't enjoy them. There's no (realistic) alternative to using the FSS if you are exploring.

There's no need to ever use the FSS in the bubble. You can use it to find mission targets and USS, but you can also simply scan the nav beacon, or in the case of USS simply target them in the HUD and have them resolve as they always did. Not as efficient perhaps, but a valid alternative.

Those of us who don't like the FSS for a variety of reasons are asking (politely) that FD reconsider their decision to not give us an optional alternative way to decide whether we'd like to explore a system. We understand that this will put us at a disadvantage, but we're Ok with that. :)

And because we recognize that lots of people do like the FSS, we are suggesting that any alternative be entirely optional so as not to impact them at all, and they not be forced back ever into using the seemingly much loathed system map reveal. :)

Well yeah, I know the nature of the controls, which is why I was wondering why someone would feel forced to use the hat. For KB&M I just use the same basic movement controls as I would for flight (except I have Mouse X as roll for its primary for flight, but that’s no biggie). Just wondering why the same principle wouldn’t apply for a HOTAS.

Motor memory.

Making the planet/system scan even more tedious and repetitive with the FSS scanner, definately spoiled the fun in exploration.

2300+ replies from two sentences. I'll settle in with a coffee and a 6 pack of redbulls to see what has enthralled the ED community since the 6th Jan.

For controls, I mapped the FSS tracking to my flight stick. I'm not flying around actively while I'm using it, so it made the most sense to me to just allow it to take over my flight control instead. My flight stick has twist yaw, so that's what I use to tune frequencies. Primary fire takes me out of FSS mode, and my secondary fire sounds my Discovery Scanner.

Zoom controls are on my throttle, so there's little sense of "loss" switching between modes. It's quite fluid and feels natural. It's almost like I put a bit of thought into it, instead of going "I guess I'll map this here.." and living with it.

Yea, it was pretty straightforward for me as well. The context based binding makes it very simple and the transition between modes feels fluid. There's something to be said about not even trying to like something or adjust to it. 'It sounds terrible so everything about it must be terrible and not worth the effort, thus I will simply resist at every opportunity.'

Between you and me, I think they're just bitter because No Man's Sky proved them wrong when they tried to ride the hate-train, so they're just looking for a new ride to Miserabletown.

For a while you had it right - you understood that people simply have different ideas about what makes exploration enjoyable.
Now you're back to ad homs and evidence-free speculation.

The NMS fans seem to have stopped telling us all how dreadful the steam stats are for ED now. I had a look at the NMS thread intending to return the favor and just didn't have the heart. Poor little fellas.

Continuing to face the likely inevitable.. its kinda interesting how the fss actually improves the experience for people who didn't actually want to do in system exploration..

Today's new one is the fss seems to significantly improve the jonking experience. Amazingly, the best usage actually comes from this too.. if you were just a jonker, looking to do exactly the same is pretty much the best experience you can get with it.

For the jonkers and the seekers, the fss works. Getting in and out fast and not caring about anything apart from what you find or take home with you.

The people with issue in this thread perhaps arrive with the desire for the system or space itself, which funnily enough the fss doesn't support at all. Its designed to be used and moved on from. Look at frontiers own livestream on how they demonstrate it.

I guess its a bit of recurring theme but look at all the awkward situations that have come about from frontier making the game for people who dont like the game they made in the first place.

I fully scanned tons of systems today. Got teo Herbg stars, two black holes, a neutron star, piles of geological locations, amazingly deep canyons, a system with 22 planets not counting their moons orbiting one star etc.

Exploration is awesome since 3.3!

Is my radio a Yaesu, Kenwood, or an Icom? :)

Scratch that, it works like something made by MFJ... :(

If it was, you'd probably be able to enable a sweep funcion that'd lock onto any signal sources detected.

If you could look at the back of the FSS, I think the nameplate would probably say it's made by Victrola.

Got back from my 30,000-or-so ly trip from Andel to Tir, taking the very long way around.

Made just over 350,000,000 credits, and gained Explorer Elite (I was almost there anyway...)

Apart from that little hiccup with 'system issues', it was a glorious experience, not once did I tire from the scanning, and the only regret was I didn't discover any black holes or LGM's.

Tried some mining which is definitely not anywhere near as fun :p Oh the tools are fine, it's just frustrating looking for 'nice things'... so I'm about to head out again :D

Haven't decided where to go, but it will involve passing through Sag A* as I've yet to make the pilgrimage.

And I must take more screenshots this time :D

During my previous trip, I saw glorious stellar sights, including a..fun tri-star system which get VERY toasty when I jumped in... Lots of nice ring systems, many picture opportunities...

I honestly cannot see the problem with the FSS. I simply think people here who want their ADS back are simply unwilling to change, and feel they're fighting the 'good fight'. Meanwhile, I'm going to be out there tagging new places, exploring new sights and generally enjoying the game. Like a lot of people.
