What is the first game that really drew you in and fascinated you?

The TV version released in 1985. That is the version I initially saw. read the book right after and was made for sub-simming ever after.

Edit: The movie initially released 1981, you may have confused it?

Definitely shady memory on my part since I looked up the release date...I did see it in a German cinema in the original German, possibly Paderborn since I was stationed there in 1981...

I watched Conan the Barbarian (with Arnie) in German in that picture house in Berlin in 1977...as well as 'Steiner, Das eiserne Kreuz' (Cross of Iron) with James Coburn...I was surprised when I saw the film eventually in English since I had read the book that the film was adapted from, 'Das geduldige fleisch' (The willing flesh) by German author, Willi Heinrich....one of the best fictional WWII books I've ever read.

I've been gaming since the late 80s, but it took until 2005 before was truly hooked on a game.

Silent Hunter III really grabbed me, to the point I would even do realtime patrols that took weeks with my pc running 24/7, I'd dive and sit on the ocean floor while i was at work or sleeping.

I ended up spending a massive amount of time (and money) making mods for the game, remodelling and adding additional submarine interiors.

Sadly as with any game, my interest tapered off eventually, haven't played since around 2011 :(

+Of course, Elite drew me in, but not quite to the same extent.

I still play SH3 with the GWX mod, still the best out of all of them :)

Anyone else a SH3 player? I have a 'fun' we could do like in the days of Subsim.

I'm still a paid up member of subsim.com too...have been since the 90's. A few bucks a year to keep the best resource site for submarine sims alive is the least I could do after the amount of help and mods I've dragged from there.

Have some rep for not jumping ship to SH5, which was imho far inferior to sh3.

+I never worked directly on gwx, but if you've ever tried any mods by "flakmonkey" that was me :D

I've certainly seen your name on a few mods around subsim.com, more than likely I have a few of them in my SH3 directory too :)

SH5...well, I've certainly got it, modded it to death, even played it for a while but just couldn't get the vibe with it at all. A first person sub game, wasn't ever going to work for me although it was a clever idea. Loved the realistic interiors and working engines from one of the mods I downloaded but getting up those damned ladders...

I've been looking around for years for a proper German language sound pack mod for SH5 too...never found one that worked that didn't mess the dialogue boxes up.

SH5 is certainly a pretty game but it never ticked the same boxes as SH3 for some reason. Thinking of SH3...it's the only PC game I have left on physical disk...a blast from the past and original from when I bought it when it was released.

Ultima IV had a big impact on me pretty early on.
Sid Meier's Silent Hunter was a very big fave too. And the original X-COM with the combined flavors of TV's UFO and Aliens was unforgettable.

All played on a Commodore 64. As was Elite, another spectacular game.

Amberstar on Atari ST. Too bad the sequel never got ported to PC and the company went bankrupt.

Well, if you're still in the mood after all those years, you can play Ambermoon on your PC now. This abandonware site has it, amongst other things, and it comes with a preconfigured Amiga emulator, just like GoG games and their preconfigured DOSbox.

Not exactly "the first game" (can't remember the first game that really grabbed me, or the best) but speaking of Thief. Thief: Deadly Shadows. And in particular: Shalebridge Cradle.

Yowza.

Admittedly, I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to tension and jump-scares. But this level scared the pants off me. It's one of the only game levels I've seen which has its own discrete wikipedia entry and even a 11-page PC gamer review. Backstory: you're exploring a dilapidated old ruin, of an orphanage which was turned into a orphanage-insane-asylum (exactly!). At the time, it was one of the creepiest atmospheres I'd experienced in a game. The beauty of it - for the 1st half of it, nothing happens. You're bracing yourself for something to jump out at you, but all you see are darting shadows and creepy, worrying sounds. So you explore deeper, and deeper into the building.

When I played it, it was late at night, the sound was up, and I was primed to leap off my chair if someone said "boo". Finally, I saw someone limping about in one of the wards. I thought about shooting them (but ammo in the game is INCREDIBLY scarce, so you really have to be careful when you use it), so I just approached them slowly and they didn't seem to pay any attention to me. But then it charged at me. Aaaaaaaaaah.

Now: there's an unwritten rule in most combat games, that you can out-run any enemy (unless it's a "you're locked in this room, kill them to escape" scenario). I don't know if that's deliberate, or just a symptom of bad pathfinding AI, but you always can escape combat by running. I ran and ran and ran, around the corner, through a doorway, found a quiet room where "it" wouldn't find me. Turned around and "AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH" "it" was right behind me and lunged at me. I jumped out of the seat and hit the console reset button. Felt a bit foolish, then went to bed. :D

Yes. Fantastic game, and fantastic section you've picked from it. Its a shame that recent Thief games have fallen a bit flat when put in comparison.

Thanks for the info, will check it out.

edit: i just tried it and it works like a charm. I love you man :D

Ultime IV: Quest of the Avatar on the Amiga.

Played that with a friend straight after school for a year. Amazing game. I still have the boxed game somewhere with its cloth map and little Ankh pendant.
