After an extremely productive weekend of slaughtering griefing murdering pirating CMDRs at the current CG, I thought I'd run over some well worn, tired and very much ignored advice for those of you who still insist on disregarding the mechanics of the game you actually bought, and continue to run cargo-maxed builds because "its a space-sim sandbox" and this is "how I want to play".
First and foremost, it's infinitely more expensive and time consuming to lose a ship, its cargo and the potential CG rewards, than it is to comply with pirate demands or to buy some f...functional shields. My CMDR ranover through across a number of CMDRs who appeared at first glance to have shields, but who on closer inspection (a liberal sprinkling of high velocity corrosive and incendiary rounds) were found to have filled a 'smaller than optimal', optional module slot with a shield generator. Now, this really is a waste of cargo space as those shields wont protect that ship or its cargo from anything other than low-rank NPCs. Running in Open to a CG, the very least of your worries are encounters with low-rank NPCs.
Aside from a couple of savvy CMDRs who acquiesced to my CMDR's immoral 'demands with menaces' (o7), my CMDR also ran across a sole T9 driving CMDR who actually 'gets' it. The CMDR who shall of course remain nameless, had proper shielding (the bare minimum requirement for a less explody ship = Hull Mass ≤ Shield Optimal Mass) and could therefore make his/her escape before my heavily engineered MCs could do any damage, barely scraping the top layer of shielding off before the low/high wake took his/her place in my gimballed crosshairs. This particular CMDR escaped a number of interdictions unharmed while a few other less-shielded CMDRs met the rebuy screen multiple times!
An alternative to shields is compliance. I'm probably not a typical pirate, running in a Vulture where cargo space is at a premium, but the loss of 16tons is a lot cheaper and easier to recover from than a multiple 10'sMillions CR rebuy. The Jettison Cargo button can be easily found on the right-hand panel in your cockpit, under 'Inventory'. My CMDR doesn't mind if the cargo is Jettisoned or Discarded, so your choice is fine.
Personally I like fireworks and my CMDR likes nothing more than delivering fast and heavily-modded metal to the places it will create the most carnage, but I like freestuff more, and the amount of blood on my CMDR's hands can't be good for his psyche, not to mention the amount of salt generated in these forums! So, being a community minded individual I thought I needed to share this advice with you all; Get some shields or comply with demands.
Not that it hasn't been shared multiple times over the years, by multiple others, and not that it was ever listened to on any of those previous occasions. We shall see.
