The Shield Imperative

After an extremely productive weekend of slaughtering griefing murdering pirating CMDRs at the current CG, I thought I'd run over some well worn, tired and very much ignored advice for those of you who still insist on disregarding the mechanics of the game you actually bought, and continue to run cargo-maxed builds because "its a space-sim sandbox" and this is "how I want to play".

First and foremost, it's infinitely more expensive and time consuming to lose a ship, its cargo and the potential CG rewards, than it is to comply with pirate demands or to buy some f...functional shields. My CMDR ran over through across a number of CMDRs who appeared at first glance to have shields, but who on closer inspection (a liberal sprinkling of high velocity corrosive and incendiary rounds) were found to have filled a 'smaller than optimal', optional module slot with a shield generator. Now, this really is a waste of cargo space as those shields wont protect that ship or its cargo from anything other than low-rank NPCs. Running in Open to a CG, the very least of your worries are encounters with low-rank NPCs.

Aside from a couple of savvy CMDRs who acquiesced to my CMDR's immoral 'demands with menaces' (o7), my CMDR also ran across a sole T9 driving CMDR who actually 'gets' it. The CMDR who shall of course remain nameless, had proper shielding (the bare minimum requirement for a less explody ship = Hull Mass ≤ Shield Optimal Mass) and could therefore make his/her escape before my heavily engineered MCs could do any damage, barely scraping the top layer of shielding off before the low/high wake took his/her place in my gimballed crosshairs. This particular CMDR escaped a number of interdictions unharmed while a few other less-shielded CMDRs met the rebuy screen multiple times!

An alternative to shields is compliance. I'm probably not a typical pirate, running in a Vulture where cargo space is at a premium, but the loss of 16tons is a lot cheaper and easier to recover from than a multiple 10'sMillions CR rebuy. The Jettison Cargo button can be easily found on the right-hand panel in your cockpit, under 'Inventory'. My CMDR doesn't mind if the cargo is Jettisoned or Discarded, so your choice is fine.

Personally I like fireworks and my CMDR likes nothing more than delivering fast and heavily-modded metal to the places it will create the most carnage, but I like freestuff more, and the amount of blood on my CMDR's hands can't be good for his psyche, not to mention the amount of salt generated in these forums! So, being a community minded individual I thought I needed to share this advice with you all; Get some shields or comply with demands.

Not that it hasn't been shared multiple times over the years, by multiple others, and not that it was ever listened to on any of those previous occasions. We shall see.

Excellent advice! [up]

True. I'm not a fan of PvP and would be among the first people to criticise how the mode is implemented, but I know what to expect when I fly in Open and try to outfit accordingly.

They won't listen.

Why would they? Experience has shown that for each pirate who actually lets his victim go after dropping cargo, there are several who proceed to kill the victim after releasing cargo.

The lesson for a long time was "try to run, do or die" vs "reward them for still destroying you". I only spent limited time in open. I never met a real pirate, but several try-to-kill-you-anyways. The forum also for a long time showed the same. For each one pirate clearly stating that he lets people go when they pay, there was like a dozen who proudly wrote about how they had people actually drop cargo for them before they destroyed them.

Don't blame the victims that they try to excape. It's what many other "pirates without a cargo hold" taught them to do.
(And yes, the quota of "pirates without a cargo hold" is quite high. I mean, the mere thought of giving up some internals of their Anaconda is just too scary. Any internal they give up for a cargo hold would drop their survival chance against a T7 to unacceptably low levels... :D )

Sad profession, stomping on flies.. you must be in dire need of money. I prefer fighting equals or better than me, but then again I am rich, so what do I know of lowly pirate’s life troubles.

Yup, if your travelling a long way from home, you pack the best survival gear that will fit in your rucksack.
I don't care if a shield/boosters knock 1ly off my ASPx jump range, I also run A rated thrusters G5 dirty drives, cos when you have no weapons you better know how to run fast.

Funnily enough, on one occasion over the weekend I managed to undock without installing a cargo rack, I'd been on a run to pay-off some of the substantial bounty before my Notoriety increased to where it currently sits (and they say murder has no consequence! I'm going to be getting interdicted by overly-enthusiastic NPC's in showroom-stock Vultures and Vipers for days). It wasn't until one of the mutually beneficial robberies was complete that I discovered the flaw in my prep...

I don't play in Open (only difference is when I'm running a refuelling ship), simply because I'm not interested in PvP. BUT I've always appreciated proper pirates and their stories, and I feel that PvPers wouldn't have a bad rep if there were more people like you (i.e. pirates, not just those who go on killing sprees).

It's quite fun if you get into the RP of it.
I've actually had more interactions with pirates than gankers or griefers. Some will just demand the cargo, but there's many who also exchange some good 'yaarrr' pirate banter. :)

I'm not a PvP player, although I had a few fights during the years, but I imagine that a pirate (or a ganker, by the way) won't use an Anaconda.

Try FDL or Clipper for a classic ganker and various fast ships (from Viper to Cutter) for pirates.

Never give in to the demands of pirates criminals murderers psychopaths terrorists. It only encourages them.

I'd rather pay a trillion credits in rebuys than hand over one leaky biowaste canister without a fight. If they want my cargo so bad, they can fit hatchbreakers.
