Calling all miner 69ers...

Limpets aren't that bad, you can synthesize some to at least scoop one core rock.

But imagine my dread as I realized my "fully outfitted" mining Corvette had no refinery :x[knocked out]

Needless to say I realized after finding and blasting a core rock :D

My fully fitted core mining Anaconda was a great success...
Limpets. Check.
Refinery. Check.
Pulse Wave Scanner. Check.
Off we go!

...I forgot the abrasion blasters.

Edit: If possible will be searching away from inhabited space ;)

Problem with that is when you come to sell what you mined, you'll have a long journey to get best prices.

I did some mining in Delkar recently, planet 9, I think. I chose Delkar as void opals get a good price at local ports (when I was mining, they were about 1.5m per ton, but I think that has come down significantly now). I tried the res (including haz res) first, but didn't find any void opals. I then went into the dark spot of the rings and just dropped down, and my hold (AspX miner) was full after three asteroids (which took an hour or two to find and mine).

It took you can hour or two to find 3 rocks?

In LFT 65 Planet 1, I was finding one every 5-10 minutes. :D
6~ an hour easy!

It was about 120ly trip to sell off VOs for 1.6m though.
But I'd make 150-200mil in a few hours. :)

Shame the markets are stabilising now.
I spent most of my money on reactive armour. Lol

Few things missed in the quick-list above.

The Must-haves:

1. Pulse Wave Scanner
2.Seismic Charge Launcher
3. Detailed Surface Scanner
4. Refinery
5. Cargo Racks

This is bare-minimum for core mining.
Other things you will very likely want:

1. Abrasion Blaster
2. Sub-surface Missile Launcher
3. Collector Limpet Controller
4. Prospector Limpet Controller

These will enable you to collect surface and sub-surface deposits. Collector limpets will keep you from smashing your face against the desk out of frustration. Prospectors make identifying asteroid features much easier and less aggravating.

Finally you may want one or two good old mining lasers as well, and all this makes your best choice ship the Type-9 Heavy. It has the hard points for all this, more than enough internals, and is rugged enough to handle minor mishaps.

fit DSS, refinery, seismic charge launcher, abrasion blaster, cargo rack,
don't forget limpets
fly to system with rings
scan for ice rings with DS
DSS ice ring for hot spots
fly into void opal hot spot
find core asteroid
fire seismic charge at 'roid till it gives up
fire abrasion blaster at deposits
scoop fragments
...
profit

:D

Alternatively, if you want an easy life and to avoid all the frustration and boredom associated with hunting for Void Opals, ignore the above (perfectly valid) advice and instead just find a Painite Hotspot in a metallic ring and shoot rocks with a couple of mining lasers.

Seriously, I'm already over the whole "hunt for VO's" thing.
It's far more relaxed just laser-mining Painite.
After all, there's only so many credits you can spend.

Unless you plan on chewing those surface deposits off the rock face after cracking it open, I'd move the abrasion blaster to a must-have.

Technically it's not, because you free chunks with a core detonation. But you're right from a efficiency point of view :)

I suggest to go to the rocky ring resource extraction site of planet 7 at Omega Sector VE-Q b5-15.

You can find core asteroids with Benitoite and sell it to Omega Mining station (in the same ring!) for roughly 500k credits/unit.

I made some nice credits with that!

OK so i dropped into a low temp diamond hotspot, just to get used to the mechanics. Pulse waving and seeing some bright yellow rocks, and some orangey rocks. After 21 prospector limpets I'm yet to find a rock with fissures. Am I missing something?

Takes some getting used too.
As soon as you find a few, you'll begin to spot the similarities.
Ignore any that look enormous.
They should appear bright yellow, with black or yellow pixel borders. I think.
Kinda depends on your graphics settings.

Someone has an image somewhere.

Seen a lot of brighties, used all 51 limpets and got ph.uck all. Lol

...I'm looking for tips and guides for mining. I don't think I've mined anything in this game, so I'd like to know what pieces of kit are optional/compulsory etc. And any info on how/where to look for them Void Opals. Dunno if people keep locations secret though, so feel free to tell me to mined my own business. (yes. Yes I did)

Bonus points for getting the title reference.
