I for one welcome "Maintentance Mode"

I wonder what they will involve? Maybe - and this is a wild stab in the dark here but bear with me - fetching and carrying things from A to B, or possibly blowing up waves of ships? Who knows, the universe is exceedingly mysterious.

No, you got it wrong :)

Blowing up loads of cargo and ferrying lots of ships from A-B many, many times :p

(but thanks for making me chuckle nevertheless - I can't see what else they could introduce that didn't involve just that in CG's!)

Yes, updates which "will not take the same level of content or size that we have seen from our previous updates" and which will be pursued by a minority of the development team.

I'll certainly set up a special calendar to look out for those.

The "minority of the development team" is one thing that has me worried. Then again, if 10 programmers are focused on fixing bugs, tweaking the AI, creating more exciting community events (we've had some good ones in the past), this may actually be better than what we had this past year, which is the entire team focused more on finishing new content at the expense of fixing the existing content.

Also, I expect all the graphic designers and sound specialists (which likely make up a majority of the team) to be working on the "new era", and rightfully so. If you're not happy with the current ships and stations and other assets in the game, then a new ship or a new station won't magically make you a believer. Perhaps a single artist could work to give us explorers some new "rumored" biological life to find in 2019, that would be nice, but I already have all the ships I want (none of which were introduced last year) :p

Yea I hope there is more alien life introduced in between the time but i doubt it will happen.

The visual assets and sound design (honk excepted) are the one and only thing that stand out for me in ED.

Which is why I fully expect New Year 2021 to be very pretty and very vacuous and very, very buggy, like everything that came before it. Nice legs, shame about the bottomless chasm where a face should be.

That's if I still remember the game exists by then.

Forgetting about Elite? How does one do that?

The other day I loaded a game I haven't played in a couple of years now. It's the kind of game that's fun for a bit but then can get boring if played too much. Thing is, I'm quite enjoying it again! So as long as you're not one of these "I'm deleting* ED from my 500 terabyte hard drive to 'make room'" yahoos, then it's okay to forget for awhile, because when you remember it'll be right there waiting for you :D

* I actually have moved ED from my internal 500 gigabyte SSD to an external drive before, but I'll never delete it.

*shrug*

Since late 2016, ED has been my "go to" game for approximately one week per year, and that's an average. It is literally that interesting and no more, and I see that average falling even further by the time the amazing 2021 content drops. If I run out of space and there's some big new game that needs it, it'll be the first thing to go. In 2017 I built a new PC and didn't install ED on it because I wasn't playing it, and I forgot all about it because I got hooked on something else (that weighs megabytes, not giga) for most of the year. It is that memorable.

It took me a week's worth of evenings in December to exhaust everything Beyond had to offer my particular playstyle (and I made 8.5 billion in wing massacres in that time, multiplying my assets by 500%, because of the amazing mechanics and balance made even more exploitable after the mission reward sweetener bribe that came with the removal of board flipping). I can't think of anything really time-consuming that has been introduced for late-game PVE non-explorer players since the Corvette and Cutter were introduced.

Likesay, to me it's just Diablo or Borderlands with all the dungeon walls missing. I can look at procgen planet screenshots any time I like with Google.

ED is a pretty unmemorable game. The forums are ten times as entertaining.

I find almost nothing wrong or bug-laden with the game to interrupt my gameplay. Of course I'm on PC but supposed bugs have never stopped my enjoyment. As for PS4 graphical bugs Duck, are you sure it's PS4 overall and not just your particular PS4-slim. Why haven't thousands of PS4-slim ED cmdrs complained about the graphical glitches since 2.3? Maybe only a handful of cmdrs play ED on PS4-slim. While the majority of PS4&PS4-Pro don't really see or notice those low shadows and texture problems.

I can only say I started from 2.1+ about when the engineers started and I saw nothing but improvements, in the quality and the graphical quality of the game. Sure, at 2.3, they (FD) did something with the sun textures to work on framerates and there were more blurries, but eventually they fixed it. And then graphics got better, the beige textures were fixed, the planetary textures were improved, and best of all, the average framerate is much better than when I first started ED sometimes up to 50% more stability on my system today. CZ's are better /w scenarios, light effects are better, the ships are better , everything is better. And they continue to fix it such as the bug-focused patches post-Beyond 3.3. It may not be as fast as some may like, but they are working on it. As for my preference, I'd rather the staff assigned to ED majorly work on the new milestones, rather than all of them bog down on the bugs, because frankly I don't see the bugs, nor do they interrupt my excellent gameplay sessions!

It's a bit late to welcome a mode that began at the beginning of 2018. It's just that fanboys failed to admit it was maintenance mode until now when Fdev proved it.

Thank you for canceling each other out so that I don't have to deal with either of these extremist views :p

Sorry to correct, Duck, but your PS4-slim experience with ED is the actual outlier. Just that you're more vocal and entertaining on the forum that makes it seem like it's not an exception. And it's factual that bugs have not interrupted my gameplay and of course is not an "extremist" experience. Many new players are discovering the game and have had little or no problems since the holiday season as the prioritized serious bugs were worked on and eventually fixed since 3.3; FD had said in their announcement today, of hundreds of thousands of players enjoying the game justifying further commitment to it's future (as well as the success of the goal celebrated by the 25th anniversary paintjob).

Did you try cleaning the dust out of it

Because it's obviously your fault for letting it get into that state.

Deffo dirty router.

Something magical has happened! I cleaned the dust out of my PS4 and my router, and not only did all the bugs in Elite Dangerous go away for me, but all the many pages of bug reports made by hundreds of players on all the platforms disappeared as well! It looks like my PS4 truly was the cause of everything wrong with ED!

Had I only listened to Krylite the first 400 times he diagnosed my console as being the problem, the world would have been a better place long ago. But at least now we all can have a glorious, bug-free experience like he does. Praise be Frontier and their holy prophet Krylite :D

I've made two bug reports in my time with the game, and those issues were eventually fixed. I'd say about 75% of the bug reports are minor issues, or issues caused by bad networking instance that could have been either on the players' system setup/isp or ED's login whch now has been majorly fixed. FD continues to fix issues as they can on their priority list. The overwhelming majority of gametime and thousands of players active outpace the time and volume of bug reports which are part and parcel of any feedback of any game. But yet, I'd seriously doubt less than .5% bugs reported is gamebreaking for the majority of players on all of the platforms.

Well, I did "prophetize" the game would continue to get bigger and better and FD would contribute more resources to ED after JWE was released. If you valued my advice Duck, you would try ED on a pc and see how well it works for yourself, or better yet, switch to PS4 Pro like you almost did or be sure to not get the PS5-slim when the time comes. ( shame, I remember when you actually had a bug-free game experience from your first months before you got addicted to hypochrondriacal complaints of very minor issues; actually for this topic, I mainly disagree with your thread topic suggestion of "maintenance mode" for the future of ED; FD are already working hard on fixing bugs as they can do on priority. I'd rather FD continue with the majority of their resources on developing the new milestones for 2020 as they announced. What can we say, ED is a massive unprecedented scoped game; quite an achievement it works so well as it does. ).

Someone's past livestream ED on PS4. Looks great and entirely functional. (switching back and forth from system map to main view seems even faster than my pc ED) The cmdr is just enjoying the game, not scratching at bugs:
