Next Update = 2020

regular content delivery, you talk about newbie stuff and CG? that doesn't sound like regular content, its more like a maintenance.

Why spend time, effort and ultimately money on improving the 'new player experience' if you're not planning to add new players to the game because it's in 'maintenance mode'?

No, that's just the first update. There also will be new content, features and QOL improvements in the updates after that.

The next two updates will bring QoL improvements, benefits, game tweaks, and bug fixes, alongside better New Player Experience. Then subsequent updates will add new features, perks, content, and other additions. The frequency of these updates are slated at every 3-4 months.

It's quite funny that we always ask them to communicate more when we aren't even able to read and understand 3 sentences.

He's just too wrapped up and white knighting the game. Every other MMO has regular content delivery (and while vastly different in nature Elite IS an MMO). Even now trash like WoW still has regular content updates (just boring as hell from what I've heard), and FFXIV has regular updates. Frontiers idea of a small update is adding a single new Thargoid ship (wow, so cool, much approv... /sarcasm) or one new small Guardian thing. Very few new people are joining the game and those who are already have quite an idea of what they are getting into from watching videos at this point or a streamer. Fact is the game is in Maintenance Mode despite the foaming of White Knights or the PR Department trying to cover.

Frontier as a company gives the vibe they really don't know what to do, are foolishly working on yet another new IP apparently, and meanwhile both this and Jurassic World are put into Maintenance Mode (probably Planet Coaster too, don't know for sure on that one). But they sure as heck can keep pumping out cosmetics that will be scooped up.

How is it white knighting to correct someone who is factually wrong?

This is what they said:

In addition to the weekly and monthly activity happening in Elite, we will also be releasing a series of updates roughly every 3-4 months. The first two of these updates will primarily focus on new player and welcoming experiences, and we will also be introducing a number of quality of life improvements for the entire player base, of which we will have more news on in the coming weeks. This will help ensure that new players are able to better progress through the game, and therefore help bring more players through to our very awesome, very welcoming community. We will also have additional game tweaks, benefits and bug fixes for all players. In the subsequent updates we will be focusing on bringing in new features, perks and content, including a range of exciting new additions to the game that will build up to this new era.

That definetely tells they are doing the right thing.

The 'should've been implemented from the start' argument is nonsense in my opinion. What does that mean, the game should not have been released in 2014 but 2018? I am glad that I had the opportunity to play it for 4 years.
This argument is regularly made but the premise of the kickstarter and future development was quite clear and did not include stuff because money and time was not available with ED being Frontier's first self-published title. IIRC the original release went significantly over budget (circa £12m) and was already running later than the stated release date.
I was more onto the issue that people actually were more hyped about fixes than of new features. This tells that both old an new features were lacking in quality. This is why we had Beyond, by the way.

Even if I am german I try it in my best John Bercow style: "I hope that the honourable gentleman has some proof for his statement :)"

Because: When Alpha was released nobody was Talking About Things that are not included in the release of Elite. During the Beta-Phases also. And what did we get? A release with 1000s of open Bugs, a 1 year delayed Horizon, a totally waste of dev-time Beyond and what do we have now? 2000s of open Bugs, and STILL stuff missing from the "should be included in release"-Department. YOu may want to consult the old design Forums and - if available - all the kickstarter-promises that still are not implemented.

I would not say this new news is should be considered maintenance mode. Think about it, the game has been in maintenance mode up until this. A company produces a product after an expensive and time consuming outlay and then reaps the return. Their work is done. All the updates are just reminders to the public why they should be buying their product. It is an attempt to milk the rest of the potential of all their initial outlay for the least amount of effort.

This is different. It looks to me that Frontier is rebooting the game in a sense. ED launched in 2014 but was being widely played in Beta before that. You could argue it is an old game by industry standards. I don't think Frontier could make a huge advancement on the game if they started from scratch with ED2 for example. It looks to me that ED as we know it now is in maintenance mode currently as you put it. But what is coming will be more of an Elite 2 in the sense that Frontier needs to commit a large portion of their workforce and capital into development, something that is on par with building a new game in resources. So, I am guessing that this will be the same old game we know, but I am expecting the scope of the game to jump much like the diferences you would see from game to game in a franchise. It is really the same game but everything is a little better than the previous effort. Remember, SC is supposed to be released at some point and the new consoles should be launching in 2020/21, so the new version of the game needs to stand shoulder to shoulder with these or it WILL be considered an old game.

I think this is positive news. It may not look like it now, but I would prefer to see Elite grow beyond the ship buying simulator that it is now into a much more affectable game world where players can interact with their environment. The game currently is just about earning credits to buy ships. It needs to grow beyond this in my opinion. I suspect that my personal tastes will not be met, but Frontier are clearly working on something that is going to take 2 years work. That has got to be better than the next multicrew or ship launched fighter strap ons that have come before. Stuff that once you have seen it loses its shine within a couple of days. Do you really want more of that? Or do you want to see Elite become a significantly better game than it is now? It is all about investment and return for Frontier. The updates we have seen up until now have been life support software. What we are getting is the next step. Honestly, something I thought I would never see. I would have considered the updates since Horizons release to be maintenance mode if I am honest.

What's with people seeing maintenance mode hiding in every shadow ?.

A game gets released they add fixes and DLC and extra's if its financially viable and they consider it worth doing. Not doing those things would be maintenance mode, we see those things happening so we know its not a real concern.

As for new IP's they are a video game development company, that's what they do. Not doing that would be a bad sign if it was sustained, FDEV on the other hand have regular new releases.

The doom-mongering all sounds a little contrived and desperate.

The almost non-existent interest I have in Elite has been fully extinguished with this announcement.

By late 2020, CP2077 more than likely will have been released.

Allow yourself to think of the vast gap that will exist between the mechanics and storytelling of CP2077 and whatever FD have planned.

CP2077 is one of the games I am most looking forward to.

CP2077 and Bannerlord are the titles I'm holding out for.

I'll watch Elite with interest, but likely not put much time into it if it continues the way that it has.
