Phoenix Point is another Epic Exclusive!

I’m still utterly bemused by the reactions to this announcement. Reminds me a bit of when PC games started requiring on-line activation, then Steam a few years later, and all the anger at that. Now folk are angry at having to use a different download manager? Bemused, I tell you :/

I'm a bit bemused as well, I remember buying Half Life 2 on a disc back when it came out and then spending a hugely frustrating 4 or 5 hours installing Steam, creating accounts and downloading updates before I could play it. It very nearly went back to the shop. Steam was as unpopular as Epic if not more so back then

The amount of nerd rage on display over a computer game is a bit ludicrous

Do you mean Windows gaming is almost dead?
The Fortnite store is owned by a Chinese company, which makes all their money on mobile platforms and then using it to bribe some irrelevant developers. That should tell you something.

There is no major outrage about anything happening on Windows-PC, because nobody cares about PC games anymore. They are invisible in retail, ports are usually years late (up to a decade), if then even happen. Beside that it's full of shovelware, so-called "indie" dudes trying to get a hold in the industry next to blatant crowdfunding scams.

Compare this to the Xbox One used games marketing desaster, Microsoft had to endure. That was real uproar, which actually mattered in the industry and lead to a change.

Huh, now I wonder if the bull*beep* reasons given by Phoenix Point's developers when they announced they've changed their minds and are withdrawing their Linux support were in any way tied to this. That was in November, so probably not, but given that the Epic store started in December, they might have been starting talks then.

In reality nobody cares. PC is almost dead. Microsoft now ported DirectX 12 to Windows 7, because they are afraid of people leaving behind the platform completely.

That's funny, as in fact PC market is still larger than playstation and xbox combined...

That "revenue" has nothing to do with conventional PC games at all.

It does. It includes all DLC, microtransaction sales etc. Which are BTW present on all platforms. You could also look up data per individual company, and usually see same picture. There's no arguing about it. PC is the platform right now. Only second to mobile and followed closely by Switch. Other consoles trail far behind.

The devs got 2.5 million off Epic for this exclusive. One of devs has said that if every crowdfunded backer got a refund they would still be in the black. This may be a great short term gain, especially at the end of the financial year. However people feel betrayed for the year delay, since they expected it on Steam and GOG from the get go.

This move puts them on a Sh*t list for sure and this maybe reflected in future sales. bad move

Stiffing the backers by unexpectedly switching launch platforms is unethical, but the buyers will get a Steam/GOG key for free after the year is up, plus the key to the Epic location. I'm agnostic about Epic.

It's probably an economic imperative.
Snapshot may not have the funding to complete the game if it takes longer that they announce it will( a near certainty) and this is better than folding and giving nobody anything. Bad PR along the way is the price.

I'll probably look for it in 2 years or so, but still hope that it will be successful in the interim. Developers operate on a shoestring when they get going and that really drags a lot of projects down.

Currently around 3% of backers have requested refunds, and Snapshot estimate around 6% will eventually ask for one.

The remaining 94% will now be getting more game for their pledges and those that don’t want to use Epic will get a nice package (after a 12 month delay) with all included DLC up to that point, and most likely the usual sort of bug fixes.

There’s a lot of noise from the usual internet hate mob types, a lot of FUD being spread about Epic, but I think as long as the game turns out decent it’ll not effect sales in any appreciable manner.

Just to reiterate earlier info, as a Fig backer I was promised a digital download when the game was finished. I’m still getting a DRM-free version of the game when it is released. The digital download is just being provided by a different online shop.

And this is the reason why you backers made this thread? Because of the "internet hate mob"?

You realize that the only thread about this game in this forum was made advertising a store and not losing single word about the game itself and what is it even about. And you making the only noise here dare to blame others?

Didn't you hear? You are not permitted to not like something anymore. Otherwise you are part of a hatemob. No disappointment allowed in this day and age!

Have you had a look at the subReddit? Or the comment sections on various gaming sites reporting on it?

Quite a few (now ex-) backers were definitely upset and disappointed at the announcement, and have since got refunds.
Then there’s the Other Ones. Quite a lot, I’d estimate mob-sized, some of whom weren’t backers, being massively over-offended that they’d have to use a different download manager and get a years-worth of free DLC and after 12 months all that from either Steam or GoG anyway, and Epic is spying for the PRC and spyware and Julian Gollop is actually Sean Murray I mean have you actually seen them in the same place at the same time and pirating the game will be safer and that’ll show them and I hope Snapshot games fail forever more and if you’re not bothered by this you’re part of The Problem etc. etc.

There are people posting lengthy diatribes about they can’t do this because of Kickstarters terms and conditions, and how Snapshot just used us all for an interest-free loan. (The game actually used Fig)

Backers genuinely upset by this descision, I have empathy for. I felt the same when offline was dropped from ED. I think they’re making a mistake getting refunds, if they just waited a year they’d still get what they wanted.

The Other Ones, though... :)

If they wait a year they can still get what they wanted, at the time they pay for it, and possibly at a discount. Can't see a downside really.
If they waited a year with their pledge, they’d get that year’s worth of DLC rolled into the package.

My $25 pledge gets me that and a copy of Chaos Reborn chucked in too. It’ll be interesting to see what price point non-Epic PP gets launched at, and the DLC pricing, though I might (hopefully) be being too distracted by Elite’s new era around then to notice :)
