Oh, it
could work.
But only if
- we could assign NPC Crews to any of our Vessels (i.e. Cargo haulers)
- task them to source specific Cargo at a place and deliver it to a Station under repair
Since we can't (amongst the hundreds of other things we can't)... not much is happening as Players are essentially invited to grind as if the Game tried to be a 2nd and 3rd unpaid fulltime job

Plus, there's virtually no incentive. Pay is Credits & Rep only and as such lousy when compared to {insert your favorite or most potent income source}.
I don't know how much RolePlay value there is in the Game asking Players to transport countless Millions of tons of Cargo - all while the local Systems, associated Factions, Powers and SuperPowers don't even lift a finger.
Dunno, just doesn't make any sense and seems extremely inconsistent.
PS.
In comparison, grinding Passengers out of Stations into nearby Carriers at least has something, I occasionally do it.
Pay is still lousy but at least in the right places, the SuperPower Rank is slowly progressing along if someone needs to build that - or get Mats/Data from the Mission Rewards. At least some tangible benefits.
