This is irrelevant. You have stated that Maxwell introduced significant performance per watt gain compared to the Kepler GPUs. At the same time you ignore the fact that Kepler has about the same performance per watt gain over Fermi.
GTX 980 does not introduce performance gain over GTX780Ti. Yes, it more efficient but this does not change that current transition has about the same performance per watt gain as the previous one.
The energy consumption is essential and represents a real evolution which is not so frequent

What I say is that the same evolution as stated above has occurred with Fermi -> Kepler transition. Which means that NVidia is introducing this performance per Watt gain for about 4-5 years.
