This is irrelevant. You have stated that Maxwell introduced significant performance per watt gain compared to the Kepler GPUs. At the same time you ignore the fact that Kepler has about the same performance per watt gain over Fermi.

GTX 980 does not introduce performance gain over GTX780Ti. Yes, it more efficient but this does not change that current transition has about the same performance per watt gain as the previous one.

The energy consumption is essential and represents a real evolution which is not so frequent

We are not on the same reasoning. You talk about inter-generational evolutions (multi-generation ... Fermi ...). I do not dispute your point of view. I speak only of the major rupture between Kepler and Maxwell. For the cards of current high performance. I prefer to pay my electric bill with Maxwell. You talk in generality, I'm talking about a very specific point (Kepler - Maxwell). We do not talk about the same thing. Concerning the GTX 980, it will surely be more powerful than the 780TI. GTX 970 is located between the GTX 780 and the GTX 780TI ... We do not even talk about the probable GTX 980TI
 
I have a 780m in my laptop. Is there going to be an m variant of these?

I wonder what the difference in performance would be (apart from power consumption)
 
GTX 980 makes my freshly bought 780 old :S

I wish I was rich id buy two GTX 980 Sli and id be happy for 6 months :D

You should always ask for rush deliveries from Amazon to ensure things aren't obsolete before they arrive at your doorstep. <sympathetic smile>:)

According to available unofficial results of synthetic benchmarks GTX980 provides about the same performance as GTX 780Ti, whereas GTX970 provides about the same performance as GTX:

I doubt that GTX980Ti will be available any time soon - it is totally illogical. In the meantime GM200 might be expected in the end of the year if we are lucky.

Our discussions (on Maxwell) are primarily based on unofficial reports, and rumors. We will see more clearly in a few days / weeks. Personally I do not look the highest performance (out of range of my finances) but of good performance with the energy consumption down, will make the happiness of my bank account ...
 
I have a iNtel / NV game rig and a AMD / AMD

Recently put a R9-290X Lightning in the intel rig.

But 5870 in the one I run Elite on.

As I always want to have a NV and ATI ( AMD ) based game capable PC.

I lookin out for a NV.

Best performance gain comes with Dieshrink. 150% to 200% are doable.
Especialy if The let the TDP grow with it.

But this is not the Die shrink. It still 28nm. That is the Limit.

So GTX9 series is a second refresh.
Which means a refinement of current dieshrink GPU.
Like the GTX480 vs GTX580 Bit performance gain bit less TDP

How ever the new dieshrink comes closer. So begin next Year the big performance step due to a dieshrink is possible.

As with 4K gaming and in my case 1440P gaming.
I might go for nextyear realy speed bump.

But if do go for GTX980 I wait at least for custom 8GB ones.

GTX9xx (GM204) series are the first high-end Maxwell GPUs, i.e. not the refresh. The only one Maxwell GPU released earlier is GTX750(Ti).

They were first designed as 20nm, however as TSMC were unable to start 20nm production in time they were re-designed for 28nm. GM200 should be 20nm and might be expected somewhere Q4 2014 - Q2 2015.
 
Somewhat off-topic, but here's a question for you CPU boffins: does a Haswell i5 run hotter on idle than previous generations of i5? Specifics: a new i5 4670K @3.4Ghz using the stock cooler in a well-ventilated case.

It shouldn't, at least if you compare with Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge. That said, Haswell has gained a bit of notoriety because quite often the thermal compound between the processor & its lid is poorly applied, resulting in processors running hotter than they should.

'Silicon lottery' seems to be the term - are you lucky enough to get a cool running (= good overclocker) CPU? ;)

Mine is running at 31C on idle (stock cooler, Antec P193 case with separate PSU bay, ambient temperature currently 21C). Haven't noticed any problems with heat since I built my system earlier this year.

Thanks - that sounds about right, and gives me an idea of what to expect (the ambient temp is always useful too).
