I fail to see how an election with a turnout of 85% can be accused of stifling free speech. Everyone had the chance to have their say and they did, for better or worse the result is in. Lets move forward and find a way to bring the country back together and improve the political system for everyone.

Indeed - 5 out of 6 people registered to vote did so; 5 people voted "No" for every 4 that voted "Yes".

The result is what it is, like it or not - that happens in a democratic society when issues are put to the vote.

Minti2

Deadly, But very fluffy...
I really object to the term "serf". I'm proud to be Scottish and proud to be British and that seems to be a bad thing these days which is a real shame. As has been pointed out terms like "serf" are divisive, belittling and to be frank utter nonsense.

Same my friend, Scottish and proud to be British, no media would sway my mind, BUT i am a SERF! to my Emperor...long live the Empire! :D

Using analogies and metaphors of this kind is part of political analysis.

That is, after all the point of this thread. To analyse the outcome and what it means for us all.

I confess I was somewhat surprised that a forum such as this, would be prepared to host a discussion of a political nature.

It does seem a shame that such an otherwise noble tolerance should be limited by the sensitivities of those who assume everything is about them.

Long live the Emperor.

Strangers discussing politics behind a veil of annonnimty is never likely to end well is it?

Still it could be worse, we could be discussing PVP or -whisper it - newtonian flight!

This is an international forum, regretfully slightly less international than I would've preferred.

But at least it means I don't have to remember my passport for the next Elite Meet.

That was always on the cards, regardless of the outcome.

Aye... he looked weary towards the end of the campaign. Shame really. Not always a fan of his politics, but he was a conviction politician who fought tooth and nail for what he believed in. A very rare breed in British politics these days.

Totally agree. A highly intelligent man, an unparalleled political tactician, and a man of conviction. Love him or hate him, you've got to respect him.

Not really been following it - was he going to jack it in if he won then?

He hinted at it, without actually saying it. But by July/August time you could see that it had all taken its toll on him. I half expected him to announce it the day before the vote - then those who would vote No because of a dislike of him would perhaps have had a change of heart.

Regardless, I think he has been a great First Minister for Scotland. It's not an exaggeration to say that the SNP would not have achieved what it had were it not for him.

We win together

''More importantly Scotland can still emerge as the real winner.'' - I thought Alex gave possibly his best performance on the stage today and not just because I know it will be one of his last.

That final line of that final speech quite fittingly gave away the wrongness of this entire debate. When the union was formed it wasn't one country overpowering another, it was an allegiance to form a union. Divided each country had it strengths and weaknesses, but alone could never have have shuck the fear of god into the known world as the union did, arguably the single most influential empire there has been or ever will.

If you want more control then devolution is the way forward as will happen now. Control over taxes and the NHS isn't a reason to become independent its a reason for reform of the political process, if you don't like the tories then the election for that is coming up next, it wasn't this one.

Don't fight for a Scotland wanting to beat the rest of us, but wanting us all the prosper as one.

We win together. We die together. Long live the United Kingdom

When you read through today's English papers, you can see how right he was, (is).

It's gonna get worse before it gets better. I just have a feeling the Oxbridge ruling classes won't risk another Thatcher.

I may be wrong though. Boris is pretty stupid.

No he isn't. It's all part of the disguise. (No, I don't like him either, but prefer to work on the principle of 'know your enema!') ;)

I'm sorry, but he is.

His intention is to play the fool but in reality, he's playing the the crowd and eventually, he'll need to deliver.

The only way he'll achieve anything in relation to Scotland is with an English Parliament.

That can only lead to conflict between the Scots and English Parliaments as the two clash. Which will be inevitable if they are both equal. More so if the likes of Boris is running the English and Sturgeon the Scots.

The Union won't last.

But more, it will lead to another every expensive layer of government, the UK Parliament, plus the English, the Scots and eventually the Welsh.

The Union won't last.

Cameron's compromise, to prevent Scots MPs from voting on English matters, sensible, means that Scots MPs will be effectively prevented from taking many government posts. Mostly affecting the Labour Party, it will make Scots MPs second class.

The union won't last.

Cameron, Miliband and the other one made a big mistake promising the Scots a blank cheque.

And I'm loving every rib tickling minute of it.

This, alas, I am sure is true. The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.

We end up with elected representatives for:

EU
UK
National
Councils (local)
