Personally, I think this thing with naming things basically the same as the original is so damn and confusing. I've only really noticed it being a thing recently(Tomb Raider, Thief, Sim City, etc.), but it makes it really hard to talk about the original, especially when you're trying to compare the two.
On the other hand, Elite: Dangerous is kind of silly when you think about what it actually means. It's kind of like making a military game and calling it Colonel: Major.
Both of those said, I think the name at least doesn't sound stupid and people who've never heard of Elite before won't be confused because they don't know what it actually means.

Would any of these be better:
Sargeant Major
Lieutenant Commander
Lieutenant Colonel
Major General
Lieutenant General
Those are actually ranks, though. As far as I know, you can't be ranked Elite Dangerous, you can only be Elite or Dangerous.

Would you make a shooter called Corporal: Captain, though? Even despite the fact that Elite Dangerous isn't a rank you can be, they've put a colon right in the middle of the two and it's very clear that Dangerous is just the subtitle of Elite, seeing as it's a sequel to Elite.
I don't know how two people have already completely misinterpreted what I was saying, but I guess the name Elite: Dangerous is just that confusing.
In a way, its an 'inside joke'.

Other pointless threads would be:
- I want 3rd person view when flying
- I want a full Newtonian flight model, not spitfires in space
- I want to build and own my own space station
There are many more. People can start new threads on these subjects, that's fine, but it would be pointless because FD will not change these things. Doesn't matter how much people jump up and down and throw their toys out of the pram there are some things that simply will not be changed. end of.
FD have been very clear on this.
Just stick with Elite Dangerous. Name branding is important and changing it will sow confusion. The E.D. name is out there for a longer period and people are used to it. And the name sets the game apart from the previous versions.
