Modes Why I choose to play in Open instead of Solo.

The important thing is that Danicus found a way to be offended and play the victim on behalf of hypothetical strangers. This thread has served its purpose.

Not offended. Just pointed out that the OP expected hyperbole as a response to his post. His post included hyperbole. I pointed that out.

I also pointed out that not all players have the capacity the OP might intuit. I pointed out that characterizing such players in a negative light is not a positive for expanding the player base.

That is all.

So personal disabilities are now what prevent people from clicking solo, or fitting proper shields...

Right.

Why should personal disabilities prevent someone from playing socially?
People shouldn't be forced out of open because someone else says so.
Though none of the points has been about that anyway, the same NPCs exist in Solo as well.
So the point of some people finding them hard still stands, not everyone finds the game a walk in the park like the OP.

From what I gather, there are people who build ships specifically to be able to go AFK while parked in a RES.

Eg
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/421307-Best-afk-Haz-Res-build

Seems to me your position has no merit if that's even possible.
You don't even have to be present if you build "properly".
A dead grandma can literally do that.

My point is that the choices a player makes are what matter.

Well, that should have been dealt with a long time ago.
AFK play isn't part of the game and FD should fix the game to prevent it.

The important thing is that Danicus found a way to be offended and play the victim on behalf of hypothetical strangers. This thread has served its purpose.

The only people "offended" are those who keep crying over people not wanting to play with them in Open.
All these silly threads and posts going "waa waa! Frontier should force you to come and play with me" really speaks volumes.
It really reeks of desperation having to make threads saying "NPCs are bad but Open is great, please be my friend".

Perhaps it's time for some folks to understand the problem isn't the mode system.

I fly an RP ship (And use straight KB/KB to fly and mouse for headlook when toggled) so NPCs still offer me a challenge since I'm nowhere near minmaxed. I know how bad I am at PvP because I enjoy CQC, even though I'm always last on the list. Sure I could switch over to a controller, watch a few videos and copy everyone else but this game is already too gamey and my keyboard makes it feel more like a ship.
I enjoy open because I enjoy being the goose. I'm no ace but I fly better than I fight. I like getting the better of them in supercruise and consider escaping with my hide a victory. Tried to fight back seriously a few times, acquitted myself to my satisfaction but my hull was generally around 75% while they were missing a ring of shields or two.
I'd rather play handicapped and make my little immersion statement than follow a narrow path and jump through meta hoops in an effort to compete with youngsters or the youthfully blessed. It's like winning in a fighting game with an ankle punch or a juggle.

A little story...

When I was still a young wing wiper Airman, a Senior Master Sergeant kinda took me under his wing because we both had a love of simulator type games. He had bought Falcon 3.0 at a friend's suggestion and I would come over and watch him play sometimes. He and his friend would fight each other many times in dog fights and it was about 50 50 on who would come out ahead. One day while I watched he and his friend logged in and played... a note is that each logged in from their own house. His friend was a lot more aggressive and pulled moves he had never seen before. But in all three engagements he managed to get a lock on his friend and kill him. After the third engagement his friend called him up and you could hear cussing in the background. He hadn't been flying against his friend at all, but an Eagle Driver. Now the F-15 pilot was no stranger to the game, but in this instance my desk jockey Senior Master Sergeant friend was better at a flight sim then a real pilot. Plus I know people in their 80's who can outrun people almost half their age while others in their 40's or 50's are on oxygen.

Not everyone has the same abilities or the same skills. Judging others by your own abilities, as in the much heard "I can do it so others should be able to as well", is a rather wrong.

I like slow punts on the Lake, some people enjoying jumping off high buildings..differnt strokes for differnt folks.

When I play im more than happy with my skill lv, have no need to "take it to the limit" let alone engage with people.

DW2 is a perfect example of this

Its where a single player game could have been a boon.

Those looking for a challenge could select "Nighmare!"

Gankers could select "I'm too young to die"

Not to hijack the thread, but let me hijack the thread by noting that I was reviewing a player's rebuy screen yesterday and noticed that he had 200+ million in fines he had to pay. This was in addition to the cost of replacing his ship. In fact, even with a loan he couldn't afford to replace his ship so he was likely going back to solo play to earn some cash for a term.

I'm new, so I don't have all the data, but ^ THIS ^ is exactly the sort of thing I want to see in PvP. I hate PvP games where the death of a player killer has no real downsides. I should think getting shanked for nearly 300 million is a beautiful thing and pretty substantial punishment. If he does have to go back to mining for a bit, even in solo play, that is satisfaction for me as far as I'm concerned.

I guess what I'm saying is that I didn't know they had those kinds of fines upon death.
That is pretty awesome.

If I were to change it I'd make it so that once a person is a player killer (say 100+ million in fines) that the person is locked in open-play so that they cannot run off to solo to rebuild. Let 'em take it like all the other players who have to deal with PKs while mining. :D But yeah, the current system is an improvement over what I've seen in other games.

I'm all for that. If you look at the posts of a lot of the pvp/Open community, they are too.

However, you've got the same issue with 'router fiddling' that people cite as justification to skirt around the validity of, for example Open Only Powerplay

The router fiddlers will be a minority, if you want to go to such an extend as to program your router to refuse p2p connections, which is essentially cheating, then probably noone will be able to stop you.
Those are edge cases and an entire feature should not be stalled due to someone cheating.

Totally agree with you Algo.

I just find it odd that certain old hand PvE Zealots (Not Wargfoot, btw as they seem to be fresh out of the box) who post here tell us why open only mechanics can't work because of 'router fiddling', yet would and do promote mode locking for 'gweeefers'.
