ANNOUNCEMENT April Update - Coming 23 April 2019

A nice update.

Excellent for the Advanced Docking Computer and the Supercruise Assist.

The great memories of FE2 are coming back to the surface

Frontier always on the front line. +1

I'm getting a bit tired by the elitist comments in this thread.
I play games for the fun of it, more options how to play a game caters a wider variety of players, which is a good thing imho.
The new modules introduced with the upcomming update are optional, I don't care if someone likes them or not, play as you like to play, it's a game and games represent fun in my book.
I don't want to be dictated how to play ED by people who think they're playing it the only right way.
Imho these new modules are a good "optional" addition to the game wether I will use them or not.

I'm liking what I'm seeing here, all except the Super Cruise Assist. Advanced docking computer, great. Another page for bounty/threat level warnings, wonderful. Allowing people to take their minds off playing the game while their ship automatically travels from one place to another, even auto dropping at the end of the journey? This just strikes me as lazy. But whatever. I'll probably use the thing on extremely long supercruise flights but you won't catch me using such on flights of less than 2000 or 3000 light seconds. On the bright side, maybe I'll be able to go back to Hutton Orbital now.

Also liking the new module slots.

This exactly. The elitist claptrap is just weird. I hope these changes succeed in widening the appeal of Elite, make it easier to get started in and enable more players who try it to stay long term and reach the higher ranks. I look forward to getting to know some of them.

I'll give the update my "vote" by fitting an advanced docking computer in every ship. Sure I can undock myself, but I feel I've done it enough times. :)

new docking computers same music i hope it won't be elite without Blue Danube auto supercruise nice will that have backing music as well Also sprach Zarathustra comes to mind

This all sounds perfect for me!

I just recently bought Elite: Dangerous in its Deluxe flavour plus a year's worth of PS Plus, so I was in for a good heft of money, but I was convinced from the trailers and reviews that it would be worth it. However, to my great shame, I wasn't even able to complete the tutorial missions, and eventually just gave up, telling myself I'd take another try but (as of yet) not quite ever doing it. These hit the exact issues that were proving to be such a problem for me. Thank you! (And hats off to all the seasoned players who didn't have any trouble with this stuff in the first place.)

My one big question: You mention that some of the content will be available to any commanders who haven't earned their first Combat, Trade, or Exploration rank, but that the modules will come with all newly-purchased ships. If we tried our hands at the tutorials but didn't ever actually launch the main game, then we start after the April update, will we begin with the new modules installed?

This is all absolute nonsense though, the idea that the game needs to actively chase away players lest it be swamped with undesirables is pathetic. Also your fears that new players just won't learn how to dock are understandable but don't worry - thanks to the new modules, they won't have to learn.
Yes and there lies the problem : "they wont have to learn" you said it, hence mediocre players.

It’s a safe bet if you never actually loaded into the game.

And so what, exactly?
Here's a new mechanic, the Ace mode.
No one can join your (or any other Ace's) instance until they prove how much of an Ace they are by 3 consecutive successful docking/undocking with FA/rotational correct off in a Cutter w7D thrusters.
Pics of their puffed out hairy chests is the 2nd requirement (sorry ladies).

All in all I like most of what I see on this coming patch. They are things to help out new commanders and try to make the game more appealing to them... Heck... it took me almost a whole month to gather the strength to stop repeating the training missions over and over again and start playing for real.

Just for the sake of constructive criticism, I believe there are better ways to address the steep learning curve than a Beginner's Zone... As commanders, we are part of the Pilots Federation, we are supposed to know or way around a ship when we venture out in the black. For that we have received training (supposedly)...

Why not revamp the training missions and turn them into a fully fledged Pilot's Academy? Learn the basics and some advanced stuff, work on simulator with a behaviour similar to the actual training missions but with more engaging voice-actiong, briefings, oriented to feel part of a bigger organization, no matter what you become afterwards. It doesn't matter if it's offline content or online.

I understand this is a lot of work and it requieres a lot of involvement, but it would be way more appealing that way, at least these are my thoughts.

Anyway, keep the great work!

You can be pretty certain that the vast majority of seasoned players had trouble when they first started, even if it was way back in the original Elite games :) It's just that they will have forgotten !

I can't answer for FD, but that's how I read it, yes (y)

And welcome to the forum and to the game, Commander. May you spend many hours exploring, trading, and fighting your way through this galaxy of ours ;)

The thing that has my interest is being able to enter orbit around a body using the Supercruise Assist.

Does this establish a true stable orbit where we can power down propulsion? Or is it some contrived orbital cruise state using the Frame Shift drive?

Not really. The sensor arrays, and life support need to scale with the size of the ship whereas the Core slot for the Computer could be the same size and negligible mass on every vessel and it seems way more, dare I say it "realistic" to have something at least as capable as an iPhone running multiple apps considering it's well over 1000 years into the future. I can dig that limpet controllers are broadcasting but surely that job could be handled by the Computer sending a signal via the sensor array to free up a huge amount of space inside the ship.

Sensor arrays don't need to scale with the ship. Increased ones give slightly better performance. Real sensors could potentialy be all the same size on all ships.. They are just a device. Not sure why there is so little gain per upgrade size actually. Life support doesn't need to scale with the ship either. It can potentially only scale with the cockpit or parts of the ship. I woul think it would depend on what is it supposed to do. Even a large cargo ship you could get away with just the cockpit because you have a helmet with some oxygen in it if you need to go in the cargo room. Not to mention a full cargo might not have a lot of room left for air if it even needs any. I doubt we are hand moving cargo when everything is a one ton minimum. So, huge ships with small cockpits could have small LS and any size sensors. I'm surprised sensor size is fit to the ship and not like other things with a choice. I guess they didn't want to design a sensors with wider capabilities. Plus they don't have a need in the game atm for other types of sensors like armor so.... At least not yet.
