Patch Notes Update April Update - Patch Notes

Seems you only need to turn off engine trails but that require some fiddling in GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml
I'll give it a try, thank you!
If it works, trails is a minor loss and I can live with it until the proper fix. No FX looks awful.

Can't believe they haven't priority hotfixed the module priority reset on jump bug yet.
All my combat builds are pretty much unplayable unless you reset 15+ module priorities every jump.

Oh Frontier...
I almost died yesterday in my exploration build because of that priority reset. One mistake - deploying hardpoints instead of a landing gear and I have smashed the ground in a dead cold ship. I was flying low enough and in a low-g world, so I survived. Moreover, it also enables modules which were turned off!

and I've edited my post above: its the GraphicsConfiguration.xml that need editing. i cut and pasted the wrong one earlier.
Sorry

🤔 Should we believe these patch notes? I thought all information about future releases was published via 4chan these days :D

I just hope they were made up as I've been wating for atmospheric landings for along time and was one of the reason's I put money down for Alpha and kickstarter. I'm not fussy any atmosphere would be good!

I don't see why that's a bad thing, I would have thought the macho PVPers would love the extra challenge. Perhaps you could explain.
It's not an extra challenge it would require a given build (more chaff/heat sinks and drag munitions) to be competitive. It's giving players less choice, this is bad for a game about having choice. Everyone fighting using drag munitions would just make every one slower, that's boring, why work for and buy a faster ship if you're just going to be slowed down.

More false arguments. You are only limited if you get hit. Interdicted, submit, boost, FA off, boost. chaff, boost. pop off a heat sink, boost, evasive thurusters, more chaff, boost, jump. You don't have to fight see previous point.
You're assuming that a pacifist player (like me and Rooster Podunk ) carries chaff, heat sink, high level thrusters all the time. I carry scanners and fly a DBX or Phantom for exploration and sight seeing. All that extra combat related gear I'd have to carry would mean I couldn't carry my science gear. Meaning my choices would be no science or ganking via stun blocking. No boost means I can't evade while my FSD cools down and charges.

I'm not saying that I agree with the people who disliked the drag changes, just that they had a point, one that I understood.

How does FA off help you to escape?
If you boost with FA on FA (flight assist) will bring your ships speed back to it's non boost max. With FA off your ship will maintain it's boost speed for longer, you could if you wanted to go FA off and throttle to zero and your ship will carry on traveling at speed as the flight assist will not fire the thrusters to slow you down it will also not fire the thrusters to maintain stable flight so if you pitch up and then release the stick the ship will continue to pitch up until you counter it by pitching down. So you get interdicted, you submit, you drop back into real space spinning a bit, your indictor drops in spinning more violently, you boost to overcome the spin and fly a straight trajectory, now go FA off and boost again, your indictor has by now got his ship under control and is dragging it round to attack you. You pop off some chaff to confuse his gimbaled weapons, you make evasive manoeuvers to avoid his fixed weapons, if you cannot fly FA off do not use the stick for this use your up-down left-right thrusters and remember if you thrust you will keep travelling in that direction until you counter the thrust , you can pop off a heat sink to reduce your thermal signature and make you a harder target and boost again and again as often as you can. Because you submitted to the interdiction your FSD will cool down faster than his so as soon as it comes on line jump and you will now have several seconds before he can follow you during which you can choose a course of action - high wake to another system - zip off in a random direction, drop out of supercruise, zip off in a random direction, jump back into supercruise, it takes him a lot longer to follow you down than it does for you to drop.
Now getting back to the drag effect. If you have PD it is unlikley that he'll get a missile strike and frags have a fairly short range so he'll have to get within 2 km before he can even pull the trigger and even if he does hit you because you are FA off you will still be honking along and the clock is on your side. Unless his ship is much faster than yours your chances of escape are very high but if it turns out that he his a highly skilled pilot able to counter your efforts or it's a wing of murder hobos, drag effect or not, your gonna die.

My word, I have never had to go through all that nonsense to get away from an interdiction. Perhaps I have just been lucky that all those players who have interdicted me before were not vary good. :ROFLMAO:

I'm not going to argue with you. You clearly believe that you speak for the whole community. I am an experienced player, just one rank away from triple elite, I do know what I'm talking about so I'm going to call rubbish on this assertion. There are only 2 sciencey scanners and both those ships have 4 utility mounts so you have room for chaff and heat sinks although the heat sink is not really needed for defense but if you have one it helps and both of them can be engineered lightweight so they'd have minimal effect on your jump range. They are also both fast, manoeurverable ships well able to run away successfully so if you choose (and you are very pro choice) not to A rate and engineer your thrusters you run the risk not escaping an interdiction however given that you only explore and sight see the chances of you encountering a hostile commander are nearly zero.

I wasn't arguing I was trying to debate/playing devils advocate. I never said I spoke for the community, quite the contrary, the community spoke and I listened. I just put forward my interpretation of the issue. And you flipped your lid, well this has been fun o7.

I’m a troll because I disagree with you/prefer to do something a different way than you? Oh, kk, guess I am a troll then.
No you're a troll because you asked how FA off helps you escape so I explained how and also illustrated the technique which you responded to by describing it a nonsense and claiming you've never had to do that to escape a player interdiction. Now I know FA off and boost is necessary to escape a player of reasonable skill so either you have never been interdicted by a player (not an NPC), you been interdicted by really poor players, or you're a troll. Perhaps you can describe your technique for escaping a player interdiction other than beating the interdiction attempt.

Zaphod, you really need to get off your high horse! I just don’t think FA helps, that all I am saying. I have never used it before, hence why I had to ask about it - I didn’t know how it helped. When you explained it I decided that it was not a method I want to use. You are the troll, not me.

Wow, I have noticed a drop in FPS when in stations on XB1X since the last update. Once out of the station it’s fine. This is on 4K performance setting. Not experiencing the fps drop on PS4 Pro.

No problem, I've read original thread on Reddit as well as your post. :)
It works. But it definitely affects not only the engine trails, but also the whole picture.
Anyway, I can live with FX level set to "high" except of modded "<Feature>Trails</Feature>" until the proper patch is out.
Thank you for the hint!

I can confirm that this works! Thanks!!!

The description is a little vague and implicit, so for those in doubt:

Close the game if it is running.

Find the file called "GraphicsConfiguration.xml".

It's typically located somewhere like:

C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software\Software\frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-64

Copy the file so you have a backup. (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V).

Open the file with Notepad (right click, Open with>Notepad).

Search for "trails" (Ctrl-F), it's roughly 3/4 down under FX.

Note: The GraphicsConfiguration.xml file contains information that the games uses, so you will find different values for the Off/Low/Medium/High settings in the games Options menu. The game uses these values for the in-game Options, but the game does NOT change the file when you change the Options. Hope that makes sense. I personally was in doubt.

You will see something like this for each Option in the game menu (Off/Low/Medium/High):

<Item>
<Feature>Trails</Feature>
<QualitySetting>2</QualitySetting>
</Item>

It is the value between the <QualitySetting>2</QualitySetting> that you have to change. It needs to be set to zero like this

<Item>
<Feature>Trails</Feature>
<QualitySetting>0</QualitySetting>
</Item>

After you have changed all four FX Trails values to 0 you must save the file.

This fixes the FPS issue. At least it worked for me.

EDIT: After you save the file, you can play around with the in-game options like you normally would.

The reddit post was a bit unspecific on the matter.
What you need to edit is the 'Trails' section of the GraphicsConfiguration.xml as shown below.
Set the value to 0 for 'EnableEngineTrails' in all quality settings there, if you cannot figure out which quality applies to you.
That reliably switches off just the engine trails and leaves anything else running as before.
No need to tamper with the FX quality option in the game or elsewhere in the Config file.

If you don't want to edit the GraphicsConfiguration.xml directly (which is recommended), then copy over the whole 'Trails' section into your GraphicsConfigurationOverride.mxl file (found in Local > AppData > Frontier Delevopments >...) and edit the settings there.
