What do these + symbols on the target stand for?

Damn dude. I'm sue that at some point you will ask someone a question that you missed in the manual. Be a **** on some other forum.
He answered your question in the very first post of this thread. If that's being a donkey or richard for you I suggest you stop using the internet, because actually you should say something like 'thank you". Answering the quesiton and pointing out there is a manual is actually very helpful.

What's up with you guys? This table above is on page 173 of this "fine manual". A new player asks politely an innocent question and you have no other idea than blaming him for not thoroughly studying this monument of a manual before playing? Please tell me that's just some odd kind of irony that I just don't get right now... :geek:

Ok, I see he's not so new. But I'm playing this game for more than 5 years now and never seen this table before.
Where did anyone blame him? The only one who got blamed was Chris, for telling people the answer to their question and showing them where the manual is.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Okay, so now I've read that pager of the manual, it still doesn't explain things fully to me.

The manual shows a RED + and a BLUE () symbol, whereas the OP screenshot shows a BLUE + and a RED () symbol.

Hoping no-one will criticise me too much, can anyone explain the colour difference ?

That's probably because OP inverted his HUD colours.

Hoping no-one will criticise me too much for giving you an answer.

I would have read the manual when I had questions about this game, but it was a piece of rot not updated for years. So I came to the forum. Didn't found that much answers but the atmosphere, the white knighting, the grammar nazying and the leet ganker mentality made me stay.

Welcome home OP. + signs means RTFM. At least for the three months it'll stay relevant.

Not me. I hate fish. My brother loves fishing, he goes for days on end. I went with him once. Never again. It was a mind-numbingly boring experience. Like watching paint dry. :ROFLMAO:

(emphasis mine)

So you play ED instead and that somehow helps to avoid mind-numbing boredom?

In case my sarcasm was lost on people, I wasn't actually having a go at the OP. More at the rudness of the 1st reply, which I have to add has been edited by a moderator to be, well, less rude.

Some months before I bought the game, I found the manual online, and started reading it. After a while, I realised that it bore a superficial resemblance to a lot of what was in game or shown by videos on you tube. Then I realised it was stuck in documentation hell, i.e not updated since 2.something. So I sort of discounted or didn’t trust a lot of what was in there, which is a shame, because there are some gems of information buried in it, despite it’s venerable condition. It is mostly well-written for the point in time it represents, it should be shown some love and brought up to date since the game won’t get a substantial update until late 2020.

Even after I bought the game, it was about 6-8 months before I realised the manual was linked in the launcher, and that was only after someone else pointed it out. As has already been pointed out, the launcher is something I don’t really spend a lot of time looking at when I want to sit down and play the game :)

Luckily they added the pilots handbook in April, which isn't just accesible in the Codex but also via direct links from several buttons on the HUD. I haven't checked if it also explains the symbols though... :)

Remember kids, if you do go looking for the manual...take a torch, a rope-ladder & beware of any large felines, particularly those with spotted coats (I think I may have picked the appropriate forum for this :p)

Also Frontier, you can now remove the 3rd column-2nd symbol down from the manual....we all know what that means now!

I’ve not looked at it yet; I’m waiting to renew my acquaintance with Elite until the bug-fix patch is released :)

How obtrusive are the HUD buttons? Something I would have welcomed coming into the game fresh, but probably something I’d like to hide or ignore for the most part at this point.

The patch was released this morning.
On the buttons, I'd say they are integrated rather unobstrusive, unless you are looking for help you are probably not even going to notice.

Did you know there is a Manual for you to read?.........polite
RTM.............................................................................Informative, but not particularly polite, but is considered polite for this forum

In the right hand panel there is a direct link to the training scenarios:

In the navigation panel locations now also display various activities:

If you select a location you can chose to set it as target (the left button) or the direct link to the Pilot's Handbook:

Clicking on it opens the article about the activity:

Or you open it using the Codex:

There are other articles as well:

I'd say it's done rather well.
